But then you need to ask yourself when you're talking to people who see a strong, capable woman starring in a piece of fiction and they think it's stupid or insulting: "Why do I care what these closeminded people think, and why should Rockstar?"

The guys at Rockstar are constantly challenging their audience's preconcieved notions regarding all sorts of things. Playing as a woman wouldn't be the most "controversial" thing they've ever done. Hell, it wouldn't even be in the top ten.

I see we agree on something, but the difference is for that's why I avoid GTA.  Though I play Crackdown, but at least in Crackdown 2 your face is covered up and it's about as serious as Saints Row, thought not as crazy over the top wacky.  Also, at leas the people who made both games sound like they really tried to include a playable female character.  If only they had more time, money, support, or what have you to do it.

Mike2640 wrote...

It doesnt? I'm just saying that Niko and John, are very specific 'people' and that making them customizable would have taken away from the narrative of the game, sort of how Aliens would have not been the same had Ripley been a man.

I'd be fine with a GTA game starring a woman as long as she's written well, something that shouldn't be very difficult for a studio of Rockstar's calibur.

I didn't say you wouldn't.

Sorry, my statement was more of a rhetorical question and aimed more towards developers of video games and people that feel like guys are all high and mighty.

GTAV and SRTT have both gone down their own paths, enough so that outside of the usual sanbox setting they are not comparable story wise.

They both fulfill their own niches. I don't see why they can't coexist.

I don't either.  I just don't play GTA because it has almost nothing that I find incredibly enjoyable.  Whereas Saints Row is just all around fun.  Whereas GTAIV sounds more like a life sim with some of its nuances from what I've read.

Also, how'd they go from the look of San Andreas to GTAIV?  That one, I don't understand either.

You know, I do remember there being a certain Catalina in San Andreas. So the possibility of a female main character in GTA game was there, Rockstar just chose to play safe once again.

No doubt they will take some ideas from Saints Row and perhaps their own BoGT, to add a little bit of craziness to the mix, nut nothing major.

The story will be the usual - "Mobster wants to live a quiet life, but his past catches up to him, blah blah blah". Well not bad actually, but already been done to death.

I suppose it's all a matter of personal tastes then. I've always been a fan of the crime drama genre, so GTA IV was quite a treat for me, something I hold right up there with Good Fellas, The Usual Suspects, and The Godfather.

Definitely. I just want to play a fun game and Saints Row does that for me, so I don't need GTA if it's not going to deliver.

And I thought maybe GTAV might be a turning point, but from the trailer it's apparent I was wrong.

Well there are plenty of games without character customization that are still tons of fun, GTA IV included. It's a nice feature but it isn't always necessary to make a game worth playing.

I saw the trailer, and it seems fun, just like a better San Andreas!
Saint Row is the ultimate madness, thanks I'm satisfied with GTA and it is mad enough.

I don't solely play games with character customization and I know a few with it that I didn't like, like Fallout.

I also play Devil May Cry and loved it and again, Crackdown 1 and 2.  But a female main character that you play throguhout the entirety of a game, the new Tomb Raider looks pretty good to me, and character customization does make it possible that i would decide to play a game tha tincludes them over another game if even nothing else about the game sounds like I'd enjoy it and give such things chance.

And by turning point, I mean including a female playable main character that you control throughout the entire game.

I care less about options and more about narrative. GTA4's Nico Bellic was a character that had to exist as he was for the plot to have any of the thematic significance that it pulled off with such gravitas. It looks like they're playing the fatherhood angle again which is unfortunate because they just did it with Marston. I'd be totally down for a female PC if they could break some new narrative ground. GTA4's ex-soldier-seeking-the-fractured-American-Dream narrative really moved me and that's what I wanted from it.

I actually liked Nico Bellic's history and story (plus Russian, Italian etc. gangs) .. maybe the voice acting wasn't attractive. The point is he is Albanian!

Judging by what the narrator is saying, the story looks the same as... every other Rockstar story so far.

It's the guy-starts-a-normal-life-after-questionable-past-and-then-gets-into-more-trouble story again. You know, I feel like Rockstar could do better than this.

People interested may want to check this out.
(Shameless advertising I know but it has so far gone unnoticed.)

I hate people that put things into perspective. You sir, have ruined my minimal excitement for future GTA installments.:crying:...Well, off to Steelport it is then.:)

Rockstar shines more with the stories of everyone BUT you. The main character has just enough story to propell you along the narative, but is muted enough to allow you to see the symphony of colors that is the cast (and to get a bit flowery here) soul of whatever city you currently reside in.

Just look at the grove street crew, then compare to the irish mafia in GTA IV. Both show off a small sampling of what life in the city is like.

Hell yes. GTA IV was a thing of pure beauty with some of the best writing seen in a game. Glad to see they're keeping the trend up for the next installment.

Just because the old games (and really just San Andreas, which was easily the weakest of the 3D games) had a bunch of silly **** doesn't mean they cant do anything else, especially when the results are so good. If I want silly, i've got Saints Row. GTA doesn't need to be silly any more.

Glad I'm not the only one.  I loved IV to death.
The graphics look just awesome in this new trailer.  Rockstar have proven them to this point that I'm already sold and will most likely pre-order as soon as I can.

Where's my ambiguous main character and my female character customization?

If they really wanted, which it's clear they don't, to get people who play Saints Row to play their game... They would have made this a priority. And this is why, I will never play a GTA game.

That is your problem not theirs.  not every game needs character creation.  As fun as running around with a solid gold guy in fishnets will be it wont be serious and the story will suffer I gurantee it.

MoCap looks like it might be used, similar to LA Noire. In fact, as I mentioned before, it looks to be sharing the same engine. I wonder if they've reused some item models, humm...

I was unimpressed by the trailer. It looked like that could have just been another DLC for GTA4. I've always been really hyped for GTA games, but this one did nothing for me.

I don't really know yet, it was only a single trailer, and IV was an incredible game.

Yes, Rockstar can make the environment, including the people that inhabit it, engaging and real, but that still doesn't make repeating the same story or character arc or whatever acceptable. It seems even Max Payne 3 may follow the same story of a guy settling down and then having more **** happen to him.

Don't take this comment as me saying that GTA V is going to suck. I'm just tired of Rockstar using the same story setup. I'll probably still buy Rockstar games because the gameplay is good and I ****ing love the characters in each of them.

I'm talking about the graphics.
The look of the trailer impressed me and I'm hearing so many people go "Meh"
Some even said it looks exactly like IV.  I don't remember IV looking that good.

Bioware does it all the time, to say nothing of Nintendo's "Like the last game, but with different bombs now!"

The basic setup is pretty much the same, but the characters themselves and their personal motivations are usually very different. Claude was after revenge, Tommy was forced by the mob as well as being kind of a psycopath, CJ was trying to protect his family and friends, and Niko was... admittedly sort of a combination by wanting revenge, protecting Roman, and trying not to be killed by Russian mobsters. :P

At any rate, even if the stories are similar at first, the details make them different and way it's told is engaging enough for it to not matter much.
