I've read a lot about misogyny in this game and have a question for those that played. Is this misogyny supposed to be a satire like some say or just pandering to supposed target audience (who's, judging from response to Gamestop's reviewer, actually very misogynistic)?
It's supposed to be satire, but very poorly executed in my view.
It's like this guy from Gamespot said, "...satire isn't satire if it doesn't challenge the thing it copies, that's just repetition."
Personally I'm more bothered by the lack of a single memorable female character though, but then again almost every character (save from the protagonists) is pretty forgettable imo.

Agreeded, the lack of any strong female character unlike say RDR who had Bonnie ect is what disapointments me the most.Zjarcal wrote...

That excuse loses weight when all female characters are sex objects, sleep around or are just rude with no such thing as a strong female character unlike say RDR that has a bunch of strong female characters who are not turned into sex objects, jokes or just plain ****es. The whole "it's satire" is a ****** poor excuse if ever I seen one.LPPrince wrote...

It's not like anybody in the game has any kind of values, nothing they won't compromise for money or power anyway, which is the most obvious satire in all the GTA games and precludes pretty much everyone in the game being called "strong" the way I see it.
The only moments I saw any kind of character strength were Michael protecting his family, Franklin's loyalty to his friends, and Trevor's loyalty to Brad (maybe, even he forgoes his revenge to pull the last heist); if even such a small sample has to be split 50/50 between male and female to prove the game isn't misogynistic then I don't know.

Trevor, Franklin and Michael for the most part can hold their own, are not turned into sex objects or jokes to point and laugh nor are characters like Lester, Lamar ect. Again look at RDR, a game that came out before GTAV and took place in the early 1900s. When that game does a better job with both gender of characters and one of the GTA devs saying a very disgusting comment about why there is no female PC in the game, yes alarm bells do start ringing and people do have the right to question it. If you and others don't find it an issue that's you, some of us do and the whole "it's satire" is simply a bs excuse.nerdage wrote...

Instead, we get Trevor, one of the biggest pile of crap I have ever seen in a video game.

Satire is ment to be funny, it was not funny. R* failed at it's own satire.nerdage wrote...
If something is imitated in such a way as to turn it into a joke, isn't that pretty much the dictionary definition of satire?

You're referring to moral values, whereas we were referring more to a memorable character that is competent in some way and not a total joke, moral compass aside.

For example, A Modest Proposal is the prototype for modern, western satire, but it's not comedic.

I've already mentioned RDR enough so I'll refrain from saying it again, my point on RDR should have already made it into everyones noggin.

Tell me Maria. How is making every female character in the game a sex object or a person to laugh at satire? What is the purpose of it? Why did the devs do it? Why is it there?Maria Caliban wrote...
Satire can be humorous, but that's not a requirement.
We are not talking about a few characters here, we are talking about the whole roster, and there's the issue.

GTA 3: Asuka and even Maria to a lesser extent (she's the one who saves your from Salvatore after all)
Vice City: Mercedes, ****ty and all, was more than capable of holding her own, while Auntie Poulet is the leader of the Haitian gang (and her missions are funny as hell).
San Andreas: CJ's sister and Catalina (totally crazy but certainly capable and even gets the best of CJ)
GTA IV: Michelle (revealing herself as a spy is one of the most memorable moments of the game for me), and Kate, who may actually have been the only true decent person in the entire GTA universe.
GTA V: .... seriously, I don't remember any female at all.
Maaaaaybe Franklin's ex, her small role is actually pretty neat. I would've liked seeing more of her, but we barely get 2 minutes.
So just to make it clear, it's not a morally sound female I missed, it's simply a female that was actually worth remembering that I missed.

Fair enough. Off the top of my head I'd at least put Paige and Taliana (heist members) and Maude (Freaks and Strangers for Trevor) in the competent category, but admittedly that's hardly a bounty. Still not sure I'd go for "misogyny" though; you could definitely call it lazy on the writers' part to have so many main and secondary characters be male, but I still think all the times where they've actively made a character look stupid for whatever reason are satire.Zjarcal wrote...
