I never understood the praise for Angry Birds as a game (the development/marketing/success/etc. aside). That style of game has been around for years already. They didn't even try to "make it their own," it's just a skin.

It would be like making a game called Irritated Worms wherein one has to orient earthworms that descend downwards in I, L, T, Z, and square shapes. If someone makes that and makes millions off of it, then great for them. But that doesn't mean the game itself is anything but a ripoff.

I always liked Plants vs. Zombies, myself - not enough to wish it to be the most successful game of all time, but I certainly like it better than Angry Birds.

I guess the only games that I liked for iOS were puzzle type things you can do while waiting in line somewhere.

Or the game where you play a stickman and draw lines in the air for him to walk on.

I'm not the least bit surprised. You see Angry Birds everywhere now. And it really did just happen out of nowhere.

It's a fun game? Why not? Does it have some hidden anti-sematic message I'm not aware of?

PS I'm a ****ing angry bird....

Just a sign of the times man. In a number of threads I've predicted that iOS and Android gaming will undermine console sales considerably in the coming years. Of course Angry Birds and Cut the Rope aren't as compelling as Mass Effect 3 or Skyward Sword but in today's environment, who really has time to dedicate 30 plus hours and 50 bucks to play? Like so many others, I would love to play those titles but will probably end up playing some iOS puzzler on my iPad 2 while out and about.  We are in mired in some of the worst economic stagnation since the Great Depression. Dollar a game sounds more enticing than 60 bucks right now for many folks...and how much did Angry Birds gross? Here is a wiki list of top games by revenue (too lazy to confirm legitimacy of stats, anyone have a legit link?)

* Pac-Man (10 billion quarters / $2.5 billion+ by late 1990s)[208][209] (inflation adjusted: $3.4 billion+ in 2011)[210]
* Space Invaders (8 billion quarters / $2 billion by 1982)[211] (inflation adjusted: $4.6 billion in 2011)[210]
* Street Fighter Series (4 billion quarters+ / $1 billion+ by 2008)[212]
* Donkey Kong (1120 million+ quarters / $280 million+ by 1982)[213] (inflation adjusted: $650 million+ in 2011)[210]
* Defender (400 million+ quarters / $100 million+ by 1982)[214] (inflation adjusted: $232 million+ in 2011)[210]
* Dragon's Lair (192 million quarters / $48 million+ in 1983)[215] (inflation adjusted: $108 million+ in 2011)[210]
* Tron (120 million quarters / $30 million+ by 1983)[216] (inflation adjusted: $67 million+ in 2011)[210]
* Time Traveler (72 million quarters / $18 million in 1991)[215] (inflation adjusted: $30 million in 2011)[210]
* Space Ace (52 million+ quarters / $13 million+ in 1984)[215] (inflation adjusted: $28 million+ in 2011)[210]

Most successful? Angry Birds.

Most engrossing, encompassing and brilliant game? Tie between Mass Effect and the early Final Fantasy games IMO.

Maybe not so much that the game itself has been incredibly successful, more of how successful mobile device apps are. Plenty of the people who downloaded it would never have even played it for more than 1/2 an hour.

It also has to do with the fact that we've lost all notion of individual conversation, and would rather be glued to our mobile devices than have an actual conversation.

Apps and games thrive on that notion, and the complete drones we are becoming. Mark my words, in the next twenty years there isn't going to be any Mass Effect, Eldar Scrolls, Dead Space or Halo type atmospheric games. It's all going to go either mobile or social. At which point I will no longer be able to call myself a gamer.

But if that's the case, it means older gamers will play oldies such as nwn and 'oldies' such as DA:O longer, which is good Posted Image

Well wait a sec. How much is it to DL angry birds? Because I know Black Ops made over $1billion. So maybe Angry birds has sold the most copies, but whether or not it's the "Most successful" depends on how much it costs.

Looks like the price is $4.99 here: http://itunes.apple....d364234221?mt=8

That seems kind of high IMO.

it does. So let's say $5. So it's made around $2.5billion. That puts it ahead of anything I know.

Apparently since its release in the 80s, Tetris has sold 30 million copies on gameboy and another 100 million on mobile devices

Didn't the maker of Tetris get screwed out of royalties?

wait how is this the most successful game ever? that's just your opinion, the article doesn't say anything about that. it should be compared to other successful titles if we are going so far as to say "history of video games".
