Since I have been told that I can't return BF3 on the grounds that it's defective because MP sucks (I wonder what genius up with the idea to launch Origin to launch a browser page to launch BF3 using a plugin), and since I don't post on other forums (that are tangentially related to gaming):

Is there ANY WAY AT ALL to chat, signal or otherwise communicate with one's partner in co-op mode (as in "Please don't crash the heli into the nearest building AGAIN" or "Please don't get shot AGAIN" when we need to split up to advance the plot)? Also, is there any way to change settings (volume, brightness, key bindings, etc) in co-op?

In the (very likely) case that the answer to both questions is "No" - is there any explanation for that other than the developers trying to see just how much rubbish they can get away with?

I have never tested the co-op mode since I'm too scared. I know you can chat in multiplayer but there really isn't any way to communicate in co-op? that just seems too weird.

Because the game was designed for consoles. When you play co-op on the Xbox you either play it together with your friend in the same room or over voice chat.

Obviously EA doesn't care much about PC gamers and it's very likely that DICE will never bother to implement or enable the message feature in co-op.

.......Oh.

(The "EA doesn't care much about PC gamers"-sentence got me starin' at the screen for minute)

But on the pc, if you have a friend using skype, you could communicate through skype as a solution, yes?
I did that when I played another game long time ago

You are aware there is VOIP in Battlelog right? That's only necessary if you're too cheap to use Teamspeak, Ventrilo, Mumble, or Skype.

I am aware of that. In fact if you read my original post, I even mentioned the voice chat but that is NOT the point here. There are actually times when you can't or your partner can't speak over the mic.

For example, my friends and I usually play BF3 late at night and sometimes they can't use mic because they don't want to wake up their parents or roommates.

Not being able to type messages in the co-op mode is just stupid.

What about mute people?

What if you play BF3 co-op on your laptop at work like I do? :D

Playing at work, that seems lot of fun :D Hmmm....You can type in skype too. You will hear this "bling" sound if someone has sent a message...or was it in msn messenger..? anyways, problem solved :)  *proud*

Playing games at work is awesome! It's almost as exciting as having sex in a public library. :o

I know you can type in Skype and in MSN and stuff, silly bunny. If I wanted to use an external messenger I'd just use Origin's in-game overlay, but it is A LOT faster, MUCH MUCH easier and simpler if I could type and read messages in the game (like in the normal multiplayer mode) instead of alt-tabbing back to desktop to use Skype or opening up the overlay menu to chat.

Ahaha.. I wouldn't know about that

Well they type so fast in the multiplayer mode that I don't get a chance to read... still, it's much easier but since they don't have such a thing in co-op mode then I guess external messenger is the only solution.
OR you can use messenger on phone or on a laptop beside the main pc.

Never mind, I managed to beat the sniper mission through sheer luck.
