Hi.
Just bought ME & ME2 (PC-DVD) and have a few questions
before installing, registering and activating either (not sure whether
ME2 has the same anti-consumer nuisance as the first one).
I
always uninstall any game I don't plan on playing for a while. Without
making any changes to the hardware, will every subsequent install need a
new activation? I also make clean installs of the OS at regular
intervals, around once a year. Again, without changing components, will a
new activation be required?
Thank you.
YAALQ (Yet another "Activations limit" question)

Yes and no. You should be able to use the same activation code for each install, but they do check activation via the internet at random intervals. If you got your games from Origin it does this for you automatically. It also automatically authorizes (and deauthorizes when you uninstall) the game. If I recall you can have the game installed on only one machine at a time. (As opposed to The Sims Medival which will let you install it on up to 5 at a time.)
Also be prepared to deal with securom as I know the first game has it. Not sure on the second. Origin's site provides a link to information on how to uninstall securom, but it can really mess with the periodic activation. Securom hasn't caused me any problems yet (I've had to reinstall the game several times due to a persistent crashing error) but I've been told it can for certain systems.
If you've registered your game you'll always have access to the activation code, if I'm not mistaken. However you can no longer register ME1 online anymore, so I'd write that one down somewhere if you didn't use Origin or don't have it on a CD.
Keep in mind that my experience is with a digital copy and not a CD one, so my experience may not relate to you.

ME1 has SecureROM, which has a limit of 5 installs before it locks you out. Once this limit is reached, you simply contact EA support (Live chat works best) and they will reset the limit.
ME2 doesnt have any DRM, only an online authentication to that matches your cd-ley to your account on here. Once its installed, you only have to log in once, and then you can disable the online connectivity, unless you purchase more DLC, which again, needs a snigle online check for authentication.

When you uninstall the game, it also refunds one install on the limit, so if you uninstall ME1, it will not effect you(per EA website). If your game computer crashes or your HD dies and you can't uninstall then is when the issues really come about.

Thanks for the helpful, and rather quick, replies.
@Serenity
Frost: I purchased the original UK retail versions of the games (not the
"value series" or whatever they're called, that are actually more
expensive), because I'm an old git and like to feel the weight of the
stuff I buy. And because they cost me €16 ($22), a little more than the
digital download of ONE of the titles. So your experience is probably
different from what mine will be.
@Bogsnot1: I tried to ask EA.support directly, but could only "Level Up"
("contact them") through the "Game Advisor" (erm, "e-mail"). I was also
informed that their services could be "leveled-up" from 7am-9pm/7 days a
week. Which prompts the question "WhoTF calls a video games support
line at 7 A.M., on week days, let alone weekends?!" (I rant. It's my
age...). No "Live chat"! Plenty of BF3 stuff though. Will try again as
soon as BF3 servers stop crashing or whatever. Glad to know ME2 is much
more friendly towards the consumer/costumer.
@mcsuperspor: So what you're saying is if I do a clean OS install (the
logical step after an unrecoverable system crash/HD swap, the examples
you gave) that will definitely eat-up one of the ME1 activations,
not so a simple uninstall/reinstall. That makes (some) sense. What I
fret about is that DRM schemes rarely, if ever, make sense. My HW cycles
are atypically long (3-5 years, except for system drives, usually 12-24
months) and I'm around halfway through, but I do mess about with the OS and
perform a complete install once every 12 months. And the 12th month is upon me.
Thank you all.

Yeah, as long as you uninstall the game, you save the install count for that time, if you just do a wipe and reinstall of OP and game then you lose an install. It would also not surprise me if they had a time limit as well, since the last time I checked I still had like 4 installs even though I was on install #3 due to various wipes and redos.

Hum... Sorry, i[/b]t's[/b] not [/b]the wh[/b]ole[/b] truth[/b] I'm found "Activation Limit" right now with ME1 and I'll have to contact Ea to solve this.
