LOL I didn't check the dates... and I've only just played the game through so I'm eager to talk about a game everyone else has long since laid to rest. ![]()
The last playthroughs, I had Isabella in my party until the end (Varric is still my favorite rogue though) and she had some nice banter - for example with Anders. She will probably never end up being a favorite of mine, but with the right companions it's ok. She is surprisingly nice to Merril, especially, when the other companions (Fenris, Anders, Sebastian come to mind) are mean to the little elf.
I even tried the romance with my female rogue Hawke, althoughI still ended up with Anders (somehow, he seems the one best suited with all my Hawkes - but then, we all have our favorites, I guess. I have to try Fenris, now that I'm over the manga look ), but it was fun.
What I like with all DA games, I played so far (which is 1 and 2 with the DLCs and Awakening) is, that you have characters for almost every playerstyle. My party in DA2 are mostly Anders, Varric and Aveline, but I try to sueeze all the other in too, because it's just fun listening to the banter.
What I wanted to say is in short: if you don't like a character, just don't use him/her. Some, you can send away or even kill or just chose to not recruit. There are so much alternatives. The only difficult class in both games are the mages: in DAO you are stuck with either smartmouthed Morrigan, who has an opinion on everything, or Wynne, who likes to teach (e.g. has an opinion on everything too) - both are not to everyones taste from what I read here (I like both, but end up mostly with Wynne in my group). In DA2 you have the posessed apostate or the elven bloodmage, Bethany is only available through act 1. I like Anders, but I can understand why others don't and Merril isn't really better, so a 'normal' mage would have been nice as another option (Sol from the Circle comes to mind - he seems a pretty down to earth guy), but the rogue characters are very diversed - especially in DA2: and all of them are good, so no reason to be stuck with Isabella if you don't want too.
Isabela's not bad....just a little immature at first, needs guidance. And I love the fact she's very open about her sexuality, much like myself, except I'm gay. She's not bad,or at least "that" bad...raising my glass for Isabela.

I did not like her the first time I played the game because I failed to get enough approval from her to prevent her from running off with the Tome of Koslun whilst I had to clean up the mess. After I mastered the friendship system in my second game I grew quite accustomed to her.
I like her character, especially in how it is represented in the various DA books and comics. Her appearance in the Inquisition Multiplayer was also a delight, which is more than can be said of Merril who got left high and dry back in the Free Marches.
I am not exactly fond of her. For starters, she has zero awareness of hygiene and personal health. She has STDs, doesn't bathe, she drinks a lot and she gets in over her head often. I do not know about any of you but I would find the notion of sleeping with a woman that has venereal disease, that does not bathe or clean herself to be quite repulsive.
Additionally, I cannot for the life of me understand why someone should be proud of the fact that they sleep around. Pride should be reserved for accomplishments and spreading your legs waiting to be penetrated is not much of an achievement, given that other animals do it too. Oh and let us not forget that her unwillingness to be forthcoming to Hawke about the Tome of Koslun is one of the reasons the Qunari attacked Kirkwall.
I used to like Isabela, but after reading Those Who Speak I'm not very fond of her. Still I think she is an interesting character and I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of seeing her again in some future game. But maybe she should change her clothes for once. I've also seen some fat!Isabela fanart that looks amazing. I don't like returning characters who look exactly the same they did ten years ago (like Morrigan). I like to see them change over the years. Leliana, Aveline and Teagan are a good example. It was nice to see how much they had changed (except Leliana still had the same haircut, that was disappointing because I thought she would look great with longer hair)
The word Mary Sue gets used way too much at this site. She doesn't nearly qualify.
I really despise Isabela for the end of the Act 2. I wasn't crazy fond of her before, but I accepted it as us being different people and I still tried to figure her out, I thought she had her moments too, but the end of Act 2 was it for me. She makes me sick as a person at that point. It doesn't help she has all that plot armour and never actually gets what she deserves for sacrificing Kirkwall just to selfishly save her ass. (Most companions can die and/or have different grim fate. I can at least shank Anders on the spot for what he's done.) It feels even worse on repeated playthroughs because now I can tell whenever she lies. So, yeah, I can't goddamn stand Isabela.
All that said, I don't think the character deserves OP's vitriol. Isabela is still a good, well-written, colourful character that has her place in the story. (Hell, if you don't like her, leave her.) Plus, some of the things pointed out are just unfair, narrow-minded and insulting. Whether somebody sleeps around or not, provided they're honest about it (and Isabela very much is), shouldn't matter. Whether somebody is or isn't feminine enough shouldn't matter. Whether somebody's interests are or aren't too focused on sex shouldn't matter. Etc. Using that as some sort of criticism is not cool.
Also, I must agree with straykat above. "Mary Sue" sure gets thrown about a lot around here. Rarely it is justified.
I like her because she represents the ultimate anti-Qunari attitude. She's the Free Spirit, who lacks "Certainty" and "Duty" and all the things the Qunari uphold. It's not supposed to be liked by everyone.. she's just there to present some balance to the story.
There's positives and negatives to it, just likes there's positives and negatives to the Qunari.
But I don't think she's a Mary Sue. There's a trail of victimizing in her wake. And while Gaider said she's his favorite character, he also said he wanted to "break her" a little. He doesn't like that's she's so carefree.
She gets annoying, but I don't hate her.
I just Rival her in every single playthru

I like this way of looking at it. I think I can't be a fan because I get really immersed and emotionally invested in my games and while I try to play characters of different moralities, I still have limits in what I personally find acceptable. Isabela's crossed that line for me. I remember finding out about the book for the first time. DAMN, was I pissed. And, to be honest, I think that's a good thing. If a character makes you feel something like that, that means somebody did a good job with them. I also think it's a good thing that not all characters are written to please the player 24/7.
I could point out the fact I'm not a fan of her humour. I don't mind the sex. But I don't enjoy her sense of humour because it's just not my kind of thing. Just like some of her personality. But I think that's more of my problem than it is Isabela's. That's why I think OP's rant is mostly bullshit. At least I know I'm biased.
In my opinion, you make a good point about her being the antithesis of the qunari mindset. I've never thought of it that way before, but she sure seems to be quite the opposite of all the qun represents in DAII.
I think people who abuse the term "Mary Sue", like OP does, should read a little something about what it is. Isabela is a very obviously flawed character, she's never presented differently, the game doesn't actually endorse her actions even if it might allow her to get away with them (We don't always get what we want in life and all that jazz. So she escaped, pissed me off a bit, big deal.), the times I remember the companions jumping to her defence amount to zero. Isabela may be many things but, yes, Mary Sue she is not.
