Indeed, and I'll be interested to see what they have up their sleeve if that's the case.

It could be set in ancient history (Egypt, Mesopotamia, etc.), or perhaps some dystopian, Blade Runner-style future world (I'd really like to see that).

Also it is possible that Edmonton now has 3rd team as well.

But then Geoff said it's a new studio so can't be another Edmonton team.

You know I could pretend to be skeptical but If I were to be honest I could probably just mail them my $60 now and almost certainly be satisfied with my purchase.

Very interested in seeing a few more hints and learning specifics. Would love if it was something Jade Empire, highly unlikely as that is. If not I'd love to see Bioware try something with a more modern and realistic bent,

Bioware Montreal is created with sole purpose to assist other studio project.

So far they did ME2 DLC's since Overlord and ME3 Co-Op.

Also it is created in 2009, newest Bioware studio is Bioware Ireland that is created this summer.
My money is on that.

Look at BioWare's studios at present:

1.) Edmonton- Busy with ME and DA. I doubt they'd have enough manpower to do a whole other franchise, but who knows? Yet they said it was a new studio and Edmonton IS BioWare for many people.

2.) Austin- TOR. Thats their whole point in existing and considering all thats riding on it, they likely aren't doing anything but more TOR for years to come.

3.) Virginia- Thats BioWare Mythic. Eh, when people think BioWare, they don't exactly think Mythic, they're thinking of the Edmonton or the former Edmonton people working on TOR.

4.) Montreal- Their newest studio, which they've seemingly been trying hard to build up for a while now. Matches up with what Geoff mentioned it being from a "new" studio that hasn't put ot their own stand alone game yet. While they've only been in a supporting role thus far, I don't think you build a new studio in a place like Montreal just to help out permanently. Them helping out or getting their feet wet with Arrival or ME3 multiplayer is acting as a stepping stone for them branching out with their own game. Thats my bet.

5.) Ireland- Purely tech support, customer service for TOR.

6.) San Francisco- Formerly EA 2D, they're responsible for the DA facebook game and doing the social gaming, facebook stuff is likely what they'll stick with. I doubt they'd announce a facebook game at the VGAs.

I kind of doubt they have everyone there working on it. Since whatever it is they're unveiling is likely just a CG trailer for a game not coming out for a while, its entirely possible they're doing preproduction on it in Montreal with the artists/writers, who don't need to be doing the finishing touches on ME3 multiplayer.

* Notices it doesn't say new IP, crosses finger for Jade Empire 2*

I thought I read somewhere that they have no intention of making another JE game. *sadface*

Still, I'm excited at something new. :o

EDIT: This is where I read about no Jade Empire 2. I don't know if it's accurate or not, but it seems likely.

In October 2011, it was confirmed by BioWare staff that Jade Empire 2 had been in development. However, it had been canceled shortly after production had begun due to the project lead's lack of vision and story clarity. With Mass Effect and Dragon Age in development as well, it was decided to use all resources on these two projects rather then continue with the disorganized Jade Empire 2. It was also stated that the Jade Empire 2 project would never be restarted.

Requoting myself about JE since I found the place I saw it mentioned as not happening, because I really think it's unlikely, as much as I would love a JE2...

Going off of their current decisions and directions, and trying to remain positive, I'm going to guess it is a brand new IP (for BioWare at least - as in not something BioWare has worked on before) AND it'll probably be another blending genres game.

They want to hit a larger audience.  They want to pull people into RPGs without letting them scoff at RPG "hard core" turn-offs.

What are top sellers?  They already have fantasy and sci-fi.  They already have actiony combat and shooter.  And they are about to release an MMO.  What's left that are remarkably good sellers?

Sports.

No other genre is currently top selling on any platform.

I don't see BioWare doing a sports RPG, but I actually might be intrigued.

But what other franchises might be big ENOUGH or on a come back.

Strategy.  Adventure.

I'm going to ignore strategy.  It's possible, but most of BioWare's games have had some small "strategy game" elements in them, and I doubt they'd shift focus to that alone (not historically their strong suit) - though, like sports, I'd be intrigued.

So, adventure.

I'm thinking of two modern-ish franchises they could look to for inspiration.
Grand Theft Auto (more action than adventure, but still)
Uncharted (action-adventure, sure, but the most successful "adventure-like" game in a long time)

Uncharted, specifically, does many things that are right in BioWare's bailiwick.  And I'd strongly argue that it really is the direction that BioWare SHOULD be focusing, as their strength is in story-telling and characters and choices and NOT in gameplay mechanics.

So I'd expect that their best financial decision, one that they could sell to stockholders or investors or higher-ups or whomever, that best plays to their strengths AND YET is different from what they've done before...
is some kind of modern-day setting (maybe near-past or near-future, but real-ish Earth setting) action-adventure RPG hybrid, focusing strongly on cinematics, casting, melding gameplay into story better and providing real choices in story direction and plot results.  RPG elements would of course be present in some format, but character creation will most likely be all but gone (which, given where BioWare wants to take games apparently, is fine at this point - lost cause to fight it out) with maybe a choice of a few pre-sets (Jade Empire) or more of a DA2 / ME series take where you alter appearance and (maybe) chose some background traits.

That's my guess.  As well as something I think would be successful for them and something I could get behind.

---

Other cynical guess would be a Farmville or Angry Birds clone.

I could see that, especially given how BioWare has said in the past they view games like GTA as a holy middle ground where all games are headed to, and something like Uncharted in overwhelmingly cutscene/cinematics driven.

My bet is on it being first person POV, set in modern or close to modern times with shooter gameplay and the "RPG" elements largely comprising of a voiced PC with dialogue wheel. And probably multiplayer.

Makes me wonder though if they don't essentially reboot Jade Empire into modern times...Remember that old concept art from what was supposedly JE2 but with what looked like a more edgy, modern aesthetic with guns?

They never actually did deny multiplayer in ME3; they simply deflected the question every single time it came up. But I know what you mean.

Jade Empire was a bit of a one timer, so I doubt we'll ever see a sequel to that.

Steampunk would be cool.

Whatever it is, I reckon it'll be a departure from what we're used to. Bioware have been focusing more and more on perfecting their cinematic story-telling style (which is fantastic), and their dialogue system is great, so I reckon it'll be an action game along the lines of something like Uncharted but with choices. I don't think there will be many traditional RPG elements in it - apart from character interaction and possibly choices. Bioware have made a lot of RPGs, and even an MMORPG, so I think their next game will move even further away from it - I imagine they want to diversify to expand their fanbase and show that they aren't a 'one-trick' developer. If this is the direction they take then I have no problems with it at all - the cinematic style, characters and writing are what Bioware do best and they can be applied to many game genres.

I also imagine it'll have a strong multiplayer focus, but not in a 'team deathmatch' kind of way; I reckon they'll try something a bit different and more unique.

Well Bioware never made ME1 for PC.

It was ported by Demiurge Studio when EA bought Bioware.

I expect something RPG-ish, after all. Sure, could (and likely is) far from a traditional RPG, but then again BioWare is EA's RPG division. You'd expect them to keep this role.

Well that's because they could have made it on PC and later on on PS3.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft was cheap on them so that Mass Effect stays only on XBOX.
