Well... I cannot help but wonder... Why?
I mean, this could be a good or even a great game, no question, but why is Bioware making this?

Bioware is known for great RPGs, Storytelling etc. Through that, their fanbase mostly consists of people who mainly enjoy just that. The Bioware "brand" is also associated with high quality RPGs.

Why the sudden shift to... I don't know... RTS? FPS? TPS maybe? Is this a shift to a new market? To accquire a new fanbase that will be larger through titles that are more mainstream? I don't quite get it, really... It's as if Porsche suddenly introduced a new line of family cars. It just doesn't feel right at all and will probably lead to brand confusion.
Well, the first trailer for ME3 looked like they were going for a shooter too at first (allthough the rifle gave it away) so maybe we should just wait and see instead of judging things based on one picture and 3 seconds of ingame footage that seems to be from a cutscene.

Again, I'm not saying that this is going to be a bad game, but it isn't what I personally want from Bioware at all. I guess a part of me just doesn't want Bioware to make something other than RPGs, too, because there hardly is any other studio out there that makes RPGs like Bioware does. Hell there seem to be less and less "big" stuidos that make RPGs at all these days. Eidos (Deus Ex) Bethesda (Elder Srolls/Fallout) and Bioware are the ones that come to mind but after that all I can come up with are Japanese studios and allthough I like some JRPGs as well, those are quite different experiences as well. There are howeever, a ton of other studios that make griddy brown shooters and strategy games... which (at the moment) is what this new game seems to be...

Bioware should just start making games like Heavy Rain. They've been going more the interactive cutscene route than making real RPGs anyways.

Yes, and from what I know (and see on the streets every day) it didn't go too well because nobody wanted a Porsche SUV ...

The plot thickens:

http://www.vg247.com...-bioware-label/

This makes sense though. You consider Victory Games is EA's new strategy game studio tasked with bringing back Command and Conquer. You look at the video and as people have already mentioned, it looks an awful lot like the kind of style you had in C&C Generals.

And then you read the description for BioWare on EA's site since it officially became an EA label a little while ago:

The BioWare Label is a division of EA which crafts high quality,  multiplatform, role-playing, MMO and strategy games, focused on  emotionally engaging, rich stories with unforgettable characters and  vast worlds to discover.

When has BioWare ever made strategy games? Never.  Plus, Victory Games has a studio in Austin TX as well- just like BioWare.

So BioWare is now in charge of Command and Conquer? HMMMMM...

It depends what you consider a strategy game.

Games such as Baldur's Gate (or even DA and ME) that allow you to pause combat, and strategically give a number of instructions could be considered a game with strategy elements.

However, if it is a C&C game, I'm not interested and have never been a fan of the series, so this may be the one Bioware game that I give a miss. I'll just wait it out and see what comes of the announcement.

This thread should be re-titled "EA revealing NEW FRANCHISE at the VGA's.....Bioware embarrassingly involved in development."

Why is it so hard for people to understand that just because THEY don't like something BioWare is doing doesn't mean that BioWare themselves don't like it.

Will it really crush people's souls that much?

BioWare was not always an RPG company. They don't *just* make RPGs.

In fact, I believe that is BioWare's biggest crutch right now.

I see Cayenne's all the time. Pretty popular car for rich folks with a family.

They really should have picked a better clip for that teaser. It just screamed bland military FPS.

But BioWare became as well known and successful as they are today because of their RPGs like BG or KOTOR. They didn't get huge success from MDK or Shattered Steel. RPGs are what made BioWare successful. Thats what people think of when they think of BioWare.

Its fine if BioWare wants to branch out, but then they have to demonstrate they can make quality games in those other new genres that measure up with the best from other companies too. I have (or used to have) faith that BioWare games would be good RPGs. I have no clue if BioWare can make a good FPS or strategy game.

I would like if it's an RTS game. One thing is the tanks in the lower left were distinctly colored from the green vehicles which would lend credence to that theory.

If it is another military FPS I'll be disappoint.

Yes, they do.

But it's quite stupid for them not to do something just because they have painted themselves into a corner with their fanbase.

The problem isn't that Bioware is making a FPS or diverging away from RPGs, the problem is that it just looks so damn  generic with the grey palette etc etc in the teaser.

Oh well.. I'm still playing a wait-and-see approach.

LOL I love all the people going "this is going to be crap" a second teaser of tanks shooting at each other and everyone knows exactly what it is.
Also the video says NEW Bioware studio. It is very possible that their branching out as companys that get big do.

As a massive fan of the C&C series from the beginning of the franchise allow me to sum up my thoughts on the concept.

That small tiny clip they showed today looks like it was ripped from Africa... Could BioWare be making an RPG set in modern times? An RPG set in the backdrop of a civil war in Africa would be great. Lots of angles and issues can be explored.

Because what they do shouldn't be stuck in the RPG ghetto.

It seems to me that the doctors feel that they've hit upon a great game ingredient -- choice+cinematic story -- that, while rooted in the RPG, doesn't particularly have to be confined to its origin.  And so, with EA's zillions and a bunch of underperforming EA divisions to remold in their own image, they're going to save/transform/Bio-ize mainstream gaming.  You see how well the classic elements blended with TPS in the Mass Effect games.  So why *not* RTS, TBS, or even FPS!?  Why should "story", in those genres, be the name for a series of overscripted chain cutscenes in which you the player have only vestigial involvement?

Yeah, I'm worried that even Edmonton will forget how to make the classics that made their name.  On the other hand, Bioware has just spent hundreds of millions putting the RP back in MMORPG.

Why do you guys think this won't be an Rpg?

There was a guy in that first picture that looked like he had augmented legs or something...maybe it will be a Half Life 2 like FPS with vehicles (possibly) and atmospheric storytelling and Rpg elements?

I agree though that its a little unsettling that Bioware/EA thinks they need to simplify and appeal to more casual gamers just to make money and sales though. Makes you worry we won't ever get a game like DA:O or ME 1 again (not that I hated DA 2 or ME 2 but you get what I mean)

That clip is way too small to actually know what kind of game it is. I does look extremely generic, though. Aren't people done with that setting already!? It's like the crapload of WW2 games again.

No clue if the video was gameplay related in any sense, or some kind of pre-rendered cutscene, or what. Last years ME3 reveal was rumoured to be a FPS beforehand...so I'm keeping my mind open as much as I can.

That said, it does look like a C&C game. If they bring the same level of story telling that they have in past games, then I'll get it.

Also has anyone noticed how in the picture the African looking guy has robotic/augmented looking legs? Everyone keeps disagreeing with me about this but I swear he is a cyborg or has augmented legs or something...

Also from the looks of it the setting isn't post apocalyptic (the architecture remains) and its in a Middle-Eastern or African like setting.

Also it seems like its in the not too far future (not too futuristic but still more advanced from now.)

Also judging by the picture the truck thing that blew up was apart of a convoy or something...and as I said, the African soldier guy flying in the air looks like he has robotic legs.

Maybe its a strategy or vehicle based game (judging by what we've seen.)

EDIT: And as I said its possible this is still an Rpg...my best hopes are its a Half Life 2-like game with rpg elements and lots of atmospheric storytelling and it isn't as generic as it looks...but who knows

it could be command and conquer (I kind of hope not though, doesn't really appeal to me, and it will probably be simplified or something)

Gonna play devils advocate here:

The short teaser says nothing about the game beyond the setting. It's a 5 sec clip so I would expect them to show some action clip as you really dont have time for anything deep or complex with such a short time. Sure it looks like its a modern day war themed game, but we cant say anything about the game genre or mechanics beyond that -- it's just not enough info to tell.

So lets hold off with the torches and pitchforks, you dont need to throw them away but this is not the time to bring them out... just remember to put the torches out before stuffing them away -- wouldnt want a fire spreading through the forums after all.

Didn't really show anything at all...the way I see it if Bioware is branching out and doing new things so be it...as long as they keep doing the games I like I'll keep buying...if not there are always other companies.
