One its a new Studio tacked on to Bioware...think of EA's main developer arm, it has sports, racers, RTS, shooters, etc. And those divisions stick to what they do.
Also the Public statement Bioware has always made is that they make great games with story, that just happen to be RPG's. Bioware is in the market to make games reguardless of where and how they go.
And in anycase, I don't see why they can't do it. Look at Rare back in the day, it made platfromers and shooters, among others. Just because they have one new division doesn't meant the rest will change. Some of you are over reacting.
Also we don't have a ****ing clue what it is. It may be an RPG, it may not, I'm willing to wait till the 10th to see what it is before I run around screaming
DDDDDDDDDOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!

No clue if the video was gameplay related in any sense, or some kind of pre-rendered cutscene, or what. Last years ME3 reveal was rumoured to be a FPS beforehand...so I'm keeping my mind open as much as I can.
That said, it does look like a C&C game. If they bring the same level of story telling that they have in past games, then I'll get it.
I was thinking about this.
The video was about Spike VGAs in general. Sure they brought up Bioware's new game going to be announced but there is no telling wether that little teeny clip is even related to it.

they have to demonstrate they can make quality games in those other new genres that measure up with the best from other companies too.
Yes, they do.
But it's quite stupid for them not to do something just because they have painted themselves into a corner with their fanbase.
It's similar to how some actors get typecast with certain roles in films/tv shows. Once you become recognized in a certain manner, it becomes more difficult to imagine that actor in other roles. I personally think Bioware can pull off a Strategy game fairly well though.

They can probably make a decent RTS, better if they weren't bound to EA, but the RTS genre is already mastered by Blizzard and Starcraft. That's why I don't think it will be an RTS. Why would you compete with Starcraft 2 and it's soon-to-be expansions?

StarCraft? Really? Thats the height of RTS for you? Wow.... West Wood was the king till after Red Alert 2. Minus that, THQ has the Warhammer line and Dawn of War is much better than Starcraft 2. And also You have Petoglyph that made Empire and UIniverse at War as possible contenders.
As to why to compete? For one Blizzard isn't making expansions, they are full games with full game prices per race. Starcraft 2 is a giant rip off, hostile to the modding and mapping communities that built the first starcraft, the game mechanics are the same as they were years ago, and short of looking pretty isn't anything new. Blizard is only "Number one" as it had a legacy to run on, and no one else is playing that market.
Reguardless I highly doubt the new title is an RTS, if that footage was from in game it looked to me to have been from a sniper scope up in a building.

I grudgingly have to admit that Starcraft kinda is the king of RTS.
And, as much as I was complaining about Starcraft 2 before the release... after I played it I came ot the conclusion, for myself, that it was worth every penny of the $60.

Star Craft 1 was great (Gundam Century and Brood War). With many Skirmish Maps and Editor.
Star Craft 2 has not so many maps and It doesn't attract me to play, except the campaign and its graphic.

In fact, when was the last time we had a fantasy RTS?
Build more Dragon Nests to train High Dragons. Upgrade them at the Dragon Temple
It's looks like Command & Conquer though. The Call Of Duty of RTS games.

Ugh too bad they screwed it up with C&C3 and Tiberian Twilight. Red Alert 1-2 are also pretty good, the later mainly thanks to mods. And Tiberian Dawn kicked off the whole RTS Movement. Generals was the last good one though. The last three in EA's hands turned to crap.

It seems that pretty much anything that falls into EA's hands turns into crap. >.>
I totally love Tiberian Sun...graphics might look a bit outdated, but it's still a magnificent game up to today
