Alright then, I noticed no one else has a thread on this, so it looks like it's up to me to make one. The Darkspawn are a mysterious species that have been haunting us since the start of Dragon Age: Origins. They have continually popped up throughout the franchise in Dragon Age: Awakening, Dragon Age 2, and most recently Dragon Age: Legacy.

Before we continue, let's have a primer on Darkspawn (Spoilers in there, people!) If you're not interested, just skip on further down. As indicated by the lines.

Note: The text blocks were originally broken up with images, but some catastrophic happened that made the
entire post consist of code. I will work on fixing this later

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--
Darkspawn Primer: Codex

- They are a seemingly mindless race that live under the ground, and are
led by the Arch Demons, supposedly the corrupted bodies of the Old Gods worshipped by the Tevinter Magisters

-Most of them lack any form of coherent thought, driven only by the
"Song" of the Arch Demons that call out to them, the more intelligent
ones are referred to as Alphas and Emissaries

- The Darkspawn Generals can decipher and act on the direct commands of the Arch Demon,
and in turn are able to command the other Darkspawn

- The Chantry tells us that they originate from the old Tevinter Magisters themselves, and this turns out to be more right than we thought.

- Darkspawn reproduce using the Broodmothers, females composed of all the
sentient races of Thedas, tainted by the Darkspawn disease, each of  which creates their own breed of Darkspawn

    - Hurlocks are from human broodmothers
    - Genlocks are from dwarven broodmothers
    - Ogres are from qunari broodmothers
    - Shrieks are from Elvish broodmothers
    - Emissaries are magic wielding, so it is unclear if they are born from magic broodmothers or not

Note: In the graphical overhaul, we saw the removal of genlock emissaries, and have so far only seen what we believe are hurlock emissaries. However, this makes sense as a "fix' to the canon, considering their base race is the dwarves, who are incapable of magic.

Note: We have not seen the shrieks at all in Dragon Age 2, so it is unclear how different they may or may not look in the new engine.

- Living in the Deeproads, they are constantly at war with the Dwarves

- Darkspawn (allegedly) only head to the surface en masse when an Arch Demon awakens, causing what we call a "Blight"

Note: Ironically, while the Blights are more feared, the Deeproads empty out and seemingly become safer during these times

- Supposedly there were seven Arch Demons, one for each of the Old Gods
the Tevinter Imperium worshipped, five of which have been killed

- They are damn awesome

Great, now let's talk about talking darkspawn.Emissaries, the magic darkspawn are capable of speaking basic words in the Kings Tongue (english) but rarely consist of single word sentences such as "Die". They very rarely
say, "Hello," and are terrible friends to make at parties, as they are known to eat all the snacks and do not share.

Darkspawn in Awakening:

What we know about the darkspawn has changed since the release of Dragon Age: Awakening, where we are introduced to The Mother, and The Architect (The latter of which premiered in the story of David Gaider's Dragon
Age novel: The Calling. The Architect is a coherent Darkspawn capable of ignoring the call of the Arch Demons, and has been researching a way to free the rest of the Darkspawn. While his final fate is determined by the player, his works live on.

The Architect had created a potion that could release Darkspawn from the taint, using Grey Warden blood just as Grey Wardens convert themselves using Darkspawn blood. The resulting Darkspawn are referred to as Disciples, most of which take  names more akin to titles such as, "The Lost" and, "The First". Unfortunately, just as not all are able to handle the Grey Warden joining, neither are the Darkspawn. The most primary example being "The Mother" who was a Broodmother that could not cope with being
disconnected from the Arch Demons' song.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Darkspawn in Legacy:

Darkspawn make a return in Dragon Age 2, we do not see every type of
darkspawn in the newest art style. The genlocks and the Darkspawn alphas
all make their debut here in their newly rendered glory. But more
importantly, we meet Corypheus (originally referred to as The Conductor,
before his actual name was revealed).

Much speculation was made about Corypheus before Legacy was released, mostly about his relation toThe Architect. In it Corypheus claims to be a magister of the Tevinter Imperium, and projects his frustration to the Old God of Silence, Dumat, who he believes mislead him in his attempt to reach the Golden City and the House of the Maker.

When defeated, he leaves behind the Seal of Dumat, and solidifies the belief that he was indeed a Tevinter Magister of old. This has also provided support that The Architect may also have been on of these, however none have been able to account as to why he has (or claims to have) no memory of being such a thing, rather
saying he was always a Darkspawn.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Real" information and Trivia:

Corypheus is voiced by David Stern.

The Architect is voiced by Jamie Glover.

The Disciples are all voiced by Mark Meer (commonly known as the Male Commander Shepard)

Further information can be found here.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, guys. Tell me, what do you all think of our good friends, the Darkspawn? Come in to say what you'd like about them, but also be sure to say what you did when dealing with The Architect and/or Corypheus.

I for one almost always let The Architect live, though my gut told me there was no way I could try and let Corypheus live.

Note: People who participate with pictures, drawings, or stories involving them can submit them to me and will be placed in this thread. Just the same, if any interest is shown I will continue adding more details to it, to provide a place to get a strong understanding on the Darkspawn.

Corypheus is what made Legacy so great. Finally got to meet one of the ancient Magisters who started the whole business and engaged him in combat. Look forward to meeting him again, as no doubt we shall. The big question is - how in the hell do you kill him? It is the supreme irony that allegedly the Magisters went after the Golden City in search of immortality and got it but not in the way they intended. Now an archdemon can be killed by a grey warden (or so we were told) because the two souls cannot occupy the same space and live but apparently a darkspawn magister can soul jump to a grey warden and the combined entity seems in better shape than before. I hope it isn't too long before we continue the darkspawn story - I find fighting ancient evil so much more interesting than politics.

Yes! I would rather have the obvious enemy too, i hate taking sides in conflicts filled with valid points from both sides.

I find it funny that two Darkspawn have some of the best voices ever.

Well, the Architect has made plenty of points.

No points can save the Darkspawn from my blade!

Ultimately the Darkspawn will always need to kidnap human/elven/dwarven/qunari females in order to reproduce, peace is not a option. Image IPB

Gervaise - Indeed, even though we learned more about the Darkspawn meeting Corypheus, we still know very little about them, and it brings up even more questions. How many more of them are there? How do their souls relate to the Arch Demons or Old Gods?

Knight of Dane: Baby steps Carver, if the Darkspawn are freed from the calling of the Old Gods, we should try and figure out the rest after.

The Messenger from Awakening will always be my favorite talking Darkspawn. I just love how he becomes 'batman' in the epilogue. Pay no mind to that whole 'blight' thing. He'd make a great companion in DA3!

^This.
I liked the Messenger, he was interesting. But I am not sure about companion. (I would hate to have my main character contanct the blight again.)
Also... darkspawn needs better names. Seriously.

Well, at least the complications of having that character around are right on the surface for you.  ;D

I felt sorry for Cory when he looked up at me that last time.

Another interesting thing - both the Qunari and Intelligent Darkspawn call people by their job title/role. However, since Corypheus actually has a name, may be we'll start seeing a few more proper names in the future. I liked the fact that the messenger showed the Darkspawn are capable of better feelings but the taint is a bit of a problem. I wonder if Corypheus in his new body would spread the taint? You'd think not since Grey Wardens don't have to be quarantened off from everyone else. I am intreigued to see how the darkspawn story develops

Cutlass Jack - An interesting point, I never actually considered The Messenger's story like turning into Batman, but it's both funny and true. I forgot how much I actually liked sparing him and knowing that he moved on to be a hero.

Gervaise - Another comparison I had not considered, however I do not expect a Qunari-Darkspawn relationship to really be expounded upon. Even so, it would be fascinating to find that, in the war against the Blight we saw Disciples fighting alongside Grey Wardens.

Note: Tomorrow I hope to start adding more information and links to the thread.

One thing that I thought was a little hilarious about Corypheus was that he was rather nice at first for a darkspawn monstrosity. He didn't even seem to want to fight you when he woke up. He just politely asked you to take him to see a colleage of his. He was so lost and confused it was almost sad for a while.

Polite???Image IPB.
I do feel bad for him, though. The guy just woke after a 1000 years sleep, was greeted by four (five if you count the warden) strangers and he has no idea what has happened and that he is a darkspawn.
I think I would be a little grumpy too.

Well yeah sure. I mean before the "You owe fealty to any magister of Tevinter" part. All he said was "Serve you at the Temple of Dumat? Bring me hence! I must speak with the First Acolyte." He sounded like he was in a hurry and spoke with urgency but he didn't sound hostile at all. I'm sure if you did take him to the Temple of Dumat he would have been grateful.

H-uh. I did some more reading, in my first playthrough somehow I spectacularly missed out that Corypheus may have the ability to transfer his souls. I will add that to the OP soon, though it does make me all the more curious about the fate of the Gray Wardens, and their place in DA 3.

I really hope there is a connection between the Architect and Corypheus but would like to expand on it and suggest a third possible ancient tevinter magister; Flemeth.

Firstly she seems to have lived a very, very long time. Secondly shes certainly a very powerful mage. Of course she doesnt bear the resemblance to the architect and corypheus share but that can be explained by the simple fact thats shes a talented shapeshifter. I would also guess like the architect she wants the end of the blights however has a different tact through encountering important people like King Maric, the hero of fereldan and the champion of kirkwall she ensures the world is on track to face and defeat the blights.
