Makes them more distinct than skinny humans with slightly pointed ears.

These two fellows, for example...

...remind me of:

Several people throughout DA mention how pretty and visually pleasing and sexually seductive elves are supposed to be – thinking of sex with one of the DA2 elves makes me think of... zoophilia. (do they go BA-A-A-A during the act?)
Right from the wrong side of the uncanny valley... frankly, I wouldn't mind the redesign if the "redesigners" had just had a little sense of basic aesthetics...

For me, at last, the problem comes from the design itself: even those elves considered beatiful by the ones defending the new look, like Merrill, Tallis or the elf girl that could hire you at the begining, seem horrible to me.
My main concern is the face -that ugly, enormous nose that contrasts with the general pale-fragile physiognomy; the eyes, the exaggerated ears...those traits are common to every one of them, and I found them simply horrendous.
They are unique, yes; but I fail to see why is that something benefical to the general design if almost every new "uniqueness" looks disastrous.
I know Bioware has shown little interest in turning back to the old design, but I really hope they step back from the most controversial ones (probably I should start looking for another thing to say; I feel as if I've said this line on dozens of threads xD)

Part of being unique is rooted in the desire to better make Dragon Age 2 stand out from other fantasy stories, both in story and appearance.
That said, it seems that there is a conflict regarding people's personal taste as to what is attractive.

I think the elf debate rages from people focussing on the very few fugly elves. And much of that fugliness comes from the textures like makeup, and of course the obligatory generic space filler like the pic in the post above. (Funny how these same problems exist in the humans...but not as many complaints) The new design actually has potential to look really good...like this elf from MotA...just my opinion.

Salaya, this design is the farthest possible from "unique". They look like any elf in Japanese manga/anime. Which obviously clashes with the "Western" characer of the whole franchise. Why the designers had to pander to the Japanese taste in elves is beyond my comprehension. I've already said this in another thread: It works in anime, because (young) humans almost look the same! See here:Salaya wrote...

Screenshot, elf and human
This elf girl has a NOSE and a CHIN, unlike 90% of DA2 elves. She also has probably the smallest and most "human" eyes possible with the new design - in short: She almost completely looks like a DA:O elf! Case in point, I'd say.Rojahar wrote...

Just for whoring my poll: I made a poll about DA:O/DA2 elf design here.
For those squeamish about the new design (means: those who, besides being exceptionally attractive, also have excellent, almost Orlesian taste and an impeccable sense of proportion and aesthetics, and I want them to bear my children... oops!) there is also a mod on dragonagenexus.com that at least gives the elves actual noses. I don't have the link right now, but it's called "Normal Noses"...

Marvin_Arnold---Apparently you did not look at the elves close enough. Again you back my theory that most of the complaints come from texturing and not the actually facial structure. Here again is that same girl whom you claim looks like a DAO elf from a different angle, and this time with a couple of elves from the main game (and not the obligatory fugly examples that most detractors use)...and the funny thing on this is...I am not a huge fan of DA2! I actually prefer a mix of the two styles to be quite honest. Here's the sh..
You can have any theory you like; it's the facial structure. You're just cherry picking individual models plus angles.
Those who like to argue that the elf redesign is fine, often claim Merril is pretty. Do you perhaps think so?
How pretty is she here?

End of discussion. Bye.
