Alright, so I decided to enter the fade and confront the desire demon to save connor (using the blood mage ritual). I had the desire demon teach me blood magic. After I did this I unlocked the blood magic specialization and saved the game.
After this I reloaded the save before I had entered the main keep to confront Connor for the first time (since I wanted to not use the blood mage ritual) and my character already had blood magic specialization unlocked.
Just an FYI, not really a big deal. Love the game!

There are other problems with that quest. I destroyed the demon through the Mage's Circle option and my interactions with Alistair as well as my quest log read as if I had chosen to allow Connor's mother to sacrifice herself to allow a mage to enter the Fade. Apparently flags for the quest resolutions are not being set properly, or erased properly (e.g. the early unlocking of your specialization). Perhaps our glitches are connected?

This isn't a glitch.. if you unlock a specialization it's unlocked for every game there after.. you only have to unlock it once. That way when you start a new character you can take a specialization earlier. You still have to spend your specialization points you get at levels 7 and 14 to use that specialization. So it's not actually part of that character until you spend a point to use it.

The codex entry for sacrificing Connor's mother says you saved her with the help of the circle. So it's just a matter of switched entries.
