Yes; but not as a true faction.

There are only two factions: Republic and the Empire. But there are neutral organizations, such as the crime syndicates and their ilk. And characters while cast in the two factions may play as Grey neutral. here is a recent article:

http://au.pc.ign.com.../1210987p1.html

Long story - short; more Grey aligned items will be coming after launch.

Personally, this is the style I am more likely to play with my main, but the freedom is that I will not need to max it, I believe. I plan on a Sith that will be more 'Lawful -Evil' in design; Evil, but with a code or belief. I enjoy many of the various villains written this way: Darth Vader, Cardinal Richelieu of the 3 Musketeers, Loghain from DAO, etc., and will not take or fulfill every quest in the same way as a Renegade Shepard.

When I said that I was wondering if the player could be neutral, I meant as in working for both sides. I don't mean working for neutral factions such as crime organizations. I mean working for both the Republic and the Empire. Also, what's explained in that article also worries me: the fact that BioWare is giving the player the liberty to customize your character in a way that doesn't make sense. For example, you can do bad things, but still be a Jedi. I'm not saying that it can't be a role-playing game, but I want customization to not contradict established lore.

If BioWare wants to give the player the freedom to be an evil character on the Republic side, then look at the Trooper class. It would make more sense to show shades of grey for a Trooper character than for a Jedi character.

I don't believe you can work for both the republic and the empire, I believe once you choose a side that's the side your on for the rest of the game.

Considering that each story is ca.200 hrs long (ie; a novel each), not every possibility could be implemented. And there are other Neutral organizations; just cannot recall them currently.

However, there are only a few planets that cannot be accessed from the other faction; at least the Origin and Capitol worlds are off limits; maybe a couple of others. The remaining galaxy overlaps and may be seen by evryone.

And it does make sense, IMO. Vader did not become a Dark Side sympathizer instantly; it was practiced behaviour. Repeated acts of revenge and thoughts of malice corrupted him over time. The non-Force using classes are seemingly  the more Neutral leaning classes, but the enviorns in which they immesrse themselves are faction restricted.

Overall, you can RP the class a bit more than the ME series with Grey Neautral choices being rewarded somewhat; just not much to see at launch, though.

Downloading it now from my beta invite. I'm not the least bit excited but no point in saying no. Of course I don't know how much I'll be playing of it with Skyrim but I'll try to fit in some time to give it my impression.
No matter what I highly doubt it'll wow me to the point where I'd pay for it. At the very least I can decide if its worth my time should it ever go F2P.
I don't think I'll ever put money into an MMO again.

The whole problem with giving players freedom is, that it won´t will happen. TOR seems to me like a typical themepark mmo. Which is fine, but if you want choices you would have to play a sandbox(ish) mmo and not this one.

I will still give it a try though. Reading about it is nice, but i want to see if i like it or not by playing it myself. If you are sceptical about it, wait for some sort of friends programm (this will come sooner or later) so you can try it out before spending money on it.

I feel the same way as Rockworm503. I would give you mine but the beta test requires my account info.

I'm almost tempted to say yes.  This thing is a behemoth that takes like a trillion GB of space and I've already deleted several things just to make room.  (gave up my Portal 2 replay to get it on there) but the install is nearly done and I kind of lied.  I am a little excited.
Plus the whole Email thing I wouldn't feel comfortable giving that info to someone I do know.

How big is it?! I haven't played the beta since last year when I tested only two classes and the server lag was extremely terrible.

I only thought it was almost done.
Nope.
I was gonna check out a little bit of it before I went to bed but now i'm thinking I'll have to leave it going while I sleep.
the initial downloader need 20 GB and so far patches of 9 GB and various more of smaller. More than 30 GB at least and its still going.

Ok it finished but it wont let me play.
I guess they haven't officially unlocked the beta to me yet.

I'm also in the Guild Wars 2 camp. There are too many questions surrounding SWtOR muddying its appeal.

In regards to SWtOR in a way the same way ... on one side I hear and read things the excite me and then just as much that at least "bring me down to earth" about it and get me worried. So I guess about different things ...
added: So to some degree that isn't quite as bad, I would be much more worried if I was hyped about the game ;)

GW2 ... as interesting as it sounds, GW2 lost me with GW1 as it didn't appeal to me at all ...

Plus after finding out what happened to the Exile in the "KotOR3" novel I rather pretend the story ended on a huge question mark following KotOR2.

DOn't say that :( ... I was actually looking way more forward to this then most games in recent times ... :(

Except Vader became a Sith afterwords. Dark Jedi aren't really even Jedi. If a real Jedi *ahem* got "10,000 Dark Side points", by then, he'd already be hunted down.

And I understand that not every possibility can be implemented, but why is it that they went through the trouble to give the you the liberty to be a bad Jedi and a good Sith, which doesn't make sense, but they can't let what should be the more neutral classes switch between the main factions of the game?

My guess? It would allow a starting faction on one side to enter Safe Zoned planets and areas within the other faction; an exploit many would take frequently, IMO.

Despite the amazingness that is Skyrim taking hold of me I still managed to squeeze in a few hours of this.
I can barely keep my eyes open right now so I'll keep it short.
I'm not allowed to talk about the content in the game but the voice acting and writing is pretty good.... In fact as far as MMO's go this is brilliant. This can easily hook me in I kid you not. But alas a well written voice acted grind fest is still a grind fest. At least in the early levels this is no different than any other MMO I've played.

But it is a good problem to have, as they say!
