The hard thing in life is to accept that something that is wonderful and worth the time for you, isn't the same thing for someone else.

Like all the wonderful things they did with Dragon Age 2?

I am sorry but if people are worried because of this than its totally justified if you look at the reccent history of so called Bioware "RPGs" This just shows what their main focus group is and for which market they developed this game.  Auto conversations? Really? How low will and can this genre sink?

Its not the option that is just unbelieveable. Its even the thought of this "feature" And I thought the awesome button was bad....

It's BSN. It's happening every day here.

Some RPG purists are butthurt over the most trivial functions because they don't have anything better to discuss and then they proceed to waste everyone's time with their drivel.

I have three steps when it comes to dealing with them:

Point, laugh, move on.

The fat pimpled horde of permavirgins that calls themselves "pure" roleplayers can complain about any rpg feature that has been invented since 1999.

Action automates some of the dialogue (we don't really know how it works yet) so people can focus on the combat. We literally have no idea how much of the conversations are automated, and which choices the player has to make in this setting.

"For those who want to emphasize action and combat and minimize story management. Action mode will set automatic replies in conversation and a normal difficulty." (official description)

This is horrible.  This is dumbing down the game.  The Mass Effect games are roleplaying games.  "RPG mode" is how the game is meant to be played.  "Story mode" is fine because some rpg's are very hard and should have a way for people to experience the story without dying a million times.

But this "Action mode" is unacceptable.  Mass Effect has never been about combat, it's been about the story and the rpg.  I know people will be saying "then just don't play action mode."  To that I say that action mode is the tip of the iceberg.  It is indicative of Bioware's trend of lessening rpg elements in favor of combat to bring in a new (read CoD) audience.  I don't want Bioware RPG's to be dumbed down because of the desire to get the action audience.  If you want to make the game easier for more casual gamers, then just provide an easier difficulty setting.  Lord knows I've played the easier setting on some RPG's.  Mass Effect 3 is one game, not 3 games.

Seriously stop thinking you should dictate how people play the game, Or what the game is about.
People comes to ME looking for different experiences and you really should get over your arrogance just long enough to understand that this does nothing to your experience.

Am I controlling the development of the game?  No.  I am expressing my legitimate dissatisfaction with a game mode that is indicative of Bioware's recent trend of catering to the action crowd at the expense of rpg elements. And THAT does affect my experience.  You can't please everyone.  You can't make a game that pleases every kind of gamer.  That is a fact.  And Bioware has done some things in the name of pleasing everyone that have alienated me as an rpg fan.  I am simply expressing my opinion on the matter.  I'm not sorry for having an opinion.

Yes, I fear the day any Dev will listen to them and kill the RPG genre.

RPG elitist: Look! It's something new and totally optional... KILL IT WITH FIRE!

Maybe even with pitchforks, but of course totally optional.

Well it's optional so I guess I can't be too upset over this. In fact the more I look at it the more it looks like a sensible middle ground.

But it won't make any option beside RPG seem all that interesting for me,

I wonder if they were inspired by Flash's mod...

Anyway, I suggested something like this over a year ago while playing ME2. The main screen would simply list all the locations in order, and we would be warped to that battle without having to go through planet mining, etc. The conversions are already skippable - just look at any speed run and tell me they get in the way.  CDPR addressed this issue in better fashion by adding Arena mode. You want your combat fix, you go there.

The reason I don't like this is Bioware's trend of straining to appeal to everyone. The magical effect Shepard has on one's sexuality is another example of this. So was the shooter style levels in ME2. Now we get co-op, and a canned story where we don't have to role play. If anyone doesn't see a trend here, you're in serious denial.

I was a big fan of the voiced protagonist, and I actually liked several of the changes made to Mass Effect 2.  Also, I do not look like that and would like to point out your hypocrisy given your previous response to my post.

Has anyone got information about what the other options were on the part of the settings menu in the beta that said 'Conversation Mode'?

The one in the screenshot was 'Full Decisions', but I haven't been able to get any other info at all.

It could settle the Action mode question pretty well.

What happened to the difficulty system. What if I want to have a good RPG experience with HARD combat? Of course, they have to replace everything that was good about the past 2 games with something stupid.

Still there.  There's screens of the option menu where you can change difficulty, helmet toggle, choice preference and basically make your custom mode.  The main menu mode options are basically prefabs.

slimgrin wrote...

Oh, and has anyone mentioned the dev resources required for such an option? Bioware can't afford to cater to everyone.

The resources argument doesn't really make sense to me.  Dialogue options are usually handled by scripts and are usually the easier scripts to make in moddable games (like NWN series etc.).  Something like this may happen script wise during Mass Effect convos (not using script language and summarizing):

Script Name:  Manual_Convo_123
-on player click of NPC, begin conversation
-play dialogue, open dialogue wheel
-on dialogue end, show options a and b
-on click of option a or b, play dialogue for respective choices
-on dialogue end, show options c, d and e
-on click of options c or d, play respective dialogue and activate quest marker 1
-on click of option e play dialogue and activate quest marker 2
-end conversation

The auto-choice dialogue could replace most/all dialogue wheel convos by calling up their script IDs and replacing them with auto dialogue scripts like this:

Script Name:  Auto_Convo_123

-on player click of NPC, begin conversation
-on player click of NPC play dialogue, hide dialogue wheel or not call it up at all
-on dialogue end, choose a, play dialogue
-on dialogue end, choose c, play dialogue
-on dialogue end, acitivate quest marker 1
-end conversation

Not exactly a tall order in resources/programming if it works something like this.

Edit:

Or it could be all one script and they use "if" conditions around the possible choice modes.

It's just more a question of: how necessary is this? It was easy enough to just skip through dialogue with a button, or turn down the difficulty if you just wanted to experience the story. This just seems like an overly complicated solution to what was really a simple problem.

It's not necessary at all. They're just adding it for the sake of convenience.

I'll probably try them out for laughs a few times.

I'm still waiting for the day BioWare finally makes a game with "cinematic mode" - a game that completely plays itself. While these new modes are definitely innovative and a step in the right direction, my desire for a game to be an immersive viewing experience is still unfulfilled.

How is it more convenient?  If you want the story, drop the difficulty. If you want the action, skip the dialogue. From what I've seen, this system merely automates Shepard's lines, but you still have to choose to skip it, meaning that there is little to no efficiency added by this mode. At least, that's what it sounds like.

Yeah thats definetly the case.

Here I even have more ideas. Why not make it so that you can see the outcome of each answer and action you do.

Or even better. I dont like the combat. Why not implement a button that lets you skip the combat completely. Than this farce would be at least over in under 2 hours.

Seriously Bioware. If you dont want to make RPGs anymore, then just say it. And everyone will be quiet. But doing it like this with the goal of killing this genre. its not going to help your cause.

The fat pimpled horde of permavirgins that calls themselves "pure" roleplayers can complain about any rpg feature that has been invented since 1999.

It should be obvious that you are a hypocrite because you displayed the same arrogance you accused me of.

I will waste no more time talking to you.

I'm still waiting for the day BioWare finally makes a game with "cinematic mode" - a game that completely plays itself. While these new modes are definitely innovative and a step in the right direction, my desire for a game to be an immersive viewing experience is still unfulfilled.

Maybe that will be a Story Mode? :o

Thats another thing. Why do you even have to fight in the story mode? Becasue they know the story sucks and they hope that you wont noticed it this way?

It's demeaning. Except RPG mode since that's how Mass Effect is supposed to be played.

But that's the RPG within an RPG; you can choose if your RPG is an RPG or not.

People wanted choice, Bioware delivered.

People wanted an RPG not this. An RG should not offer you such a decision. And RPG should immerse you in the World through its characters and enganging story and your decisions (In West RPGS)  and not about how lazy you want to be while playing this game.

So don't use action mode. See how easy that was? There's your engaging story and decisions.

Maybe some of us are just here for the story.

I don't really mind about the RPG stuff - I liked ME1 and ME2 for the characters, dialogue and choices. If the combat is as good as it looks in ME3 I'll play on the RPG setting, but the story mode still seems appealing to me. You can be immersed in a world without having to spend ages shooting its inhabitants.
