I'm unclear what arguments are even left at this point.

As I said before, it's a matter of persepective. If you ask me, the arguments of "your" side don't hold any water (but I'm not going into them AGAIN, even if now a certain other poster is going to try to troll the hell out of me for saying so), and you can do with that whatever you want. You can accept the fact that someone *GASP* thinks differently than you do, (damn infidels!), or not.

Would be nice to know more on the subject soon, though, that much I will say.

How about, just let us argue? You know, if you don't want to read it, you don't have to. It's optional, and you should be welcoming the fact that there is an option that ALLOWS people to argue if that's what they want to do, because that will attract a wider audience.

Alright I'll stop now.

Sorry, it was just frustrating trying to find more opinions. You seemed to stray just a bit, from the POV of someone who didn't read your every post, however; at least you were thorough and in the end summed it up nicely on the one point and only point I agree with: that the modes should just maybe be re-arrranged in order because sometimes people who are new to something and aren't sure what to try will just go with what seems like the default option, assuming it's what the game developers aimed for. I actually did this myself with the first ME in choosing the male shep and didn't like him enough to finish the first mission. It wasn't until ME2 that I tried it again with femshep, fell in love, went back and played the first as femshep and loved it too. Now, it's my favorite game series of all time! But I almost missed out because of a default setting.

I think it is an interesting idea. As is obvious EA is looking to hook more people on ME, and perhaps Bioware in general. You know, like some folks, I have been more or less a shooter gamer. Just want to get in there, play a linear game, and move on. That was until I played Bioware games. I now find myself feeling the opposite - RPG elements and sotry are awesome. Shooters are not enough. I like that they have the options available. Perhaps after a number of playthroughs it might be nice just to whiz through in action mode. Guess we'll see when the game is out. Either way, so very looking forward to it. *ME3 chub*

It's the fact ACTION is the first pick on the three choices that has people upset? Really??

Yes, because every single person who has a problem with the game modes is raging about EXACTLY that detail, the order in which they are on the list. *eyeroll*

GET REAL, WILL YOU.

So maybe if they put the options side by side with none of them preselected or highlighted until you move your cursor over each one, that might be a good thing, perhaps? It would be nice to see the same done with the rest of the options, too. That way, harder to be offended and also might help encourage new players who don't like how the game is playing for them to start over with another setting.

Hah, that was me, too. DA changed that for me, then ME2 (then went back and played ME), and now DA2. Funny, though, I've only gotten this new appreciation with BioWare games. It kind of sucks because typical linear games no longer live up to my new gaming standards, and I still don't like characters and stories nearly as much in other RPG games from other developers. BioWare is the only kid on the block I really enjoy playing with right now.

As Terror_K pointed out with the metrics, this should be an interesting experiment. Personally, I think the vast majority would be RPG mode. I very much doubt we have a lot of the CoD crowd here. In fact, I think CoD fans are very happy with their CoD and BF3 is probably as far away as they venture. I can't see action modes changing that reality.

How many cod fans buy the game for the single player? Not many. I agree with you that rpg mode will still be the most played but we could do without the snide comments.

Have we all forgotten the ME2 feedback that revealed more people played the Soldier class than all the others put together? To me that strongly suggested a bunch of Shooter fanboys came in, chose the easiest class and just tried to blitz their way through the game in mostly Shooter-standard fashion.

I dunno, perhaps I was reading too much into those stats.

More people played Soldier because the Soldier had the best abilities and few weaknesses. Adrenaline Rush + Shotgun Carnage + Shield Boost in ME1 with a high class Shotgun and explosive ammo was more exhilarating than turning a Krogan into a ragdoll and pumping 50 pistol rounds into him.

A lot of people played Paladin in _______, so the sequel should probably focus on a Paladin's journey and ignore the other 12 classes we created using that logic.

Actually soldier was about the most boring class if you ask me.

Boring=/=Weakest

I get Shammy's point Soldier was one of the strongest classes in ME1. Infiltrator could beat it depending on how you build your Shepard.

Actually, I find the "weaker" classes to be more exciting and fun to play, and the "stronger" ones more boring to play.

Depends. Infiltrator for me is the best due to it being a better endgame class since you really have to work your way to turning your sniperrifle into a Anti-Tank weapon. Hell I love sniping things from the top of a mountain and pwning a Geth base.

Yes, turning weakness into strength is the fun bit. The infiltrator is weak unless you play tactically.

It also happens to be my favorite class.

Depending on the context and my mood, I've felt the same way. I actually think soldier is pretty powerful, and I really enjoyed my first playthrough of ME as a soldier. But, now I find it kind of boring. YMMV.

See, you're all kind of proving my point. We forumites try different classes and different builds. The average gamer out there probably just chooses the simplest and most suited to sticking with weapons almost all the time, then blasts through the game once before trading it in for the next action game out.

I don't have them, no. I just vaguely remember them. They're probably floating in these topics somewhere if you looked hard enough. Perhaps somebody like Phaedon or javier might have a quick-link on hand.

Those stats are, um... I'll go with "interesting", because "sad" would sound like I'm judging people. Image IPB (Chants to himself: "To each their own, to each their own, to each their own...")

I'd say you are. I am a hardcore rpg fan yet I always choose the soldier.

The soldier to me represents all of those wonderful space marines in sci-fi that take on everything the universe has to throw at them, NOT with cheap superpowers or fancy technological tricks, but with guts and a gun. Think the marines in the aliens series, or the soldiers in starship troopers.

Essentially ashley williams really.

Edit: Althought to be fair, the engineer class is sounding really appealing this time around.

How on earth is 33 hours 'rushing'? None of my playthroughs, including my very first one, has gone above 40 hours. And in each I did literally everything; scanned every planet, had all conversations, did all sidequests, did all DLC, etc...

33 hours is more than twice what most actions games take to complete.

To be honest most people who played ME1 (not all) played Soldier first since it was the most shooter oriented class and most simplest one to use.

33 hours on AVERAGE. Since I spent 50 on mine, someone had to have been through in 16, basically.

My first playthrough was close to 70 hours, granted, a lot of dying and reloading, and some trial and error involved. My second was just over 50, with Arrival thrown in. The subsequent ones rolled around 45-50.

THIS is why I don't automatically think Bioware is intentionally screwing over the fans.

The FANS themselves seem to want to play the soldier either because of story reasons or the fact that it is the most straightforward class around.

Even in ME1 where the Adept and biotics were overpowered, I wouldn't be surprised that most people took the soldier class either...

I mean, if you're paycheck is based on giving what the fans want, why would you ignore your largest fanbase?

You should have been around back in the old bioware forums before the social network. I wrote a really long post tearing people a new one of digging into the soldier class. No hard feelings though. :P

Mass Effect back in the day originally  drew me in with its space opera setting which reminded me so much of some of the series I mentioned above, and it just so happens my favorite sidequest in the game involves your squad and three alliance soldiers (all that was left of an alliance outpost) holding off waves of rachni popping out of a hill using nothing but turrets (powered by the mako) and your rifles. I was sad when we didn't get to see the soldiers again after that.

Nothing but guts and a nice solid gun.
