Just finished ToB. I didn't have high hopes for the story's conclusion after SoA, but I feel the need to point out a few things ...

- Melissan: predictable, abysmal final villain to finish off your tale with (don't even get me started).

- Sarevok epilogue cop-out: redemption has zero impact on ending (and his epilogue also needlessly canonizes the fact that his woman is dead no matter what your personal experience is, too). It's only a wall of text, it would have required one minute of extra pay to write an additional ending for him (seeing as I'm guessing that it took all of 1 min to write what actually made into the game).

- Party members epilogues the same regardless of your final choice (only romance effects endings at all).
Imoen said she would travel with me when I stayed mortal (as did Sarevok). Fickle loyalty, eh? How unsatisfying/anti-climatic. It's just walls of text, it would have required 1 minute of extra pay per character to write an additional ending for each of them. Nothing but lack of care.

My mind is blown

Son, I am Disappoint :(

It was only an expansion. Maybe they had to start other things... It is linear the whole way through. The Five don't develop any real depth.

What people say and what people do are not always the same.

The endings only change for Charname's love interest if she or he refuse godhood. I found ToB's endings very satisfying. I didn't think that whatever they said following Charname's decision had to apply for life. Some of those epilogues, such as Mazzy and Nalia's, imply they took place several years, even decades following the final death of Bhaal. Sarevok and Imoen probably decided to go their own way after awhile. Imoen in particular had become a heroine in her own right, and no longer had a reason to stand in Charname's shadow.

You are right that alternate endings could have easily been added, given the romance finales. Chances are that was how the writers wanted to end those character arcs, regardless of what they told Charname beforehand.

I don't disagree on Amelyssan. She was a terrible and transparent villain. There should've been a neon sign over her head in Saradush shining "primary antagonist". :P I think Ishad Nha hit it with the expansion issue. They didn't have time to develop villains at the level of Sarevok or Irenicus. The expansion whizzed by too fast. On top of that there were too many other villains hogging the spotlight. Amelyssan had to share space with the Five and Demogorgon. She didn't stand a chance.

They are not ALL so bad. Nalia's is very consistent with her development during the story, as is Anomen's, and Keldorn's is even emotionally moving. And Edwin's is very satisfying Image IPB

I remember seeing an ending for Mazzy where she was made a paladin while the bhaalspawn looked on... was this part of some mod? In all endings I've had with her she died after a long life of heroics after founding the Fentan Knights.

Yes, it must have been. Only love interests have two possible endings: a default, and a romance variant.

If you found the ending of Tob non-epic... might I suggest you try it again with Ascension WeiDU with improved battles. wont spoil it, but it was more appropriate an ending imho. a simple google search will find it, David Gaider's unofficial addon.

As above, but I also recommend DavidW's Wheels of Prophecy, which allows less linearity and more choice in ToB (the host sites down at the moment, but it's mirrored here).

I did enjoy Nalia's epilogue, in fact it's one of the few I can remember. I also enjoyed her newly acquired 'Naturally!' voice clip.

What did irk me though was Viconia's romance ending.
If you don't know what it is then stop reading now.

How can poison affect a Cleric of unimaginable epic power? She must have been able to cure poison at that level silenced, paralysed, blind and probably dead. The only possible explanation I can think of is that the poison was crafted by Lolth herself. Regardless, I do like a tragic ending and can't really imagine a character where such an ending so aptly fits. She's almost as much a tragic character as Ophelia from Hamlet.

Also if the PC was romantically involved and chose to become a god then she should have had a third alternative epilogue. Didn't she mention at some point in ToB how she's become his most devout priestess? I quite enjoy that image.

I think that priestess comment wasn't meant seriously. She was definitely a devout Sharran throughout. Given that and her background, I thought her romance ending was spot on. It was better than her standard epilogue. Priestesses of Shar do not come to good ends--period. Viconia leapt from worshipping a psychotic, sadistic and unforgiving goddess; to a cold, calculating and nihilistic deity.

The poison thing is acceptable to me as an act of DM fiat. In this case, BioWare's writers were our DMs for the adventure. Those cleric spells are great against standard poison, but that doesn't prevent a DM from wielding the power of plot to create one said spell can't counteract.

I agree on wishing there was a third alternate ending for romanced characters that were left behind, though. Not just for Viconia, but for everyone. Since implementing alternate endings was clearly possible, I can only guess none of the love interests dwell on their past with Charname after a point. They have their own lives to lead once those adventures are long behind them.

Also, Nalia rocks. :P

I agree with themincer on those topics and some more. Fortunately thats why we got mods, for example, as much as i think viconia's romance ending is fitting , i really dont see my "good" characters leaving viconia in the "shadow" while he becomes a prominent citizen/noble (if memory serves, thats what happens), so i can download a more "happier" ending mod for the couple (which would be edwin's romance mod in this case)

Personally, I was very disappointed by Viconia's epilogue. Aside from what someone said about her having more than enough cure poison spells at that point, for most of my game she had actually been wearing a ring that gave her "complete immunity to all poison." I would think that "all poison" would include anything special that Lolth came up with.

That said, I think the terrible epilogues could still have some use if they were turned into a mod or third Baldur's Gate game in which they're one possible outcome if the PC makes certain choices.
