So, how hard do you like your games? How much of a challenge
will ruin your game? Do you like casual eye-candy/story-telling? Or do
you fancy the impossible?

It would be great if you'd bring examples of different games here as
well.

Poll.

I myself went crazy with HoMM: Armageddon's Blade campaign - in a good way but still. ^_^

That's understandable I guess. Though I usually don't feel a game is "kicking my ass" - it's more like "it gives me a respectable challenge".

Makes me feel the game has a respect for me in a way. :)
And in another, more important aspect - the game seems more respectable itself then...

I'll go with the next to highest setting, then raise it to the maximum if the game has a steep learning curve. If it doesn't I start at the top. It isn't because I consider myself some hot s*** gamer. Games nowadays are just embarrassingly easy compared to the Nintendo Hard stuff I grew up on.

I have not so fond memories of having to memorize patterns in the likes of Axelay and Radiant Silvergun. Worse still were situations like in level 6-2 of Ninja Gaiden where it was less memorization than dumb luck and lightning reflexes. Hair pulling challenge is such a rarity now, it's treated as a selling point. i.e.; Dark Souls.

I've gone from usually easy to usually normal. I used to just want to be able to play through games with minimal hassle but I've realised games feel more rewarding and therefore more fun when you overcome an obstacle where you test yourself more. I still don't have enough patience for hard difficulty though in most games. I play games for the experience more than the challenge.

I prefer to play on normal; the way the developers intended. If I find that it is too easy, then I will turn the difficulty up.Which doesn't happen very often.Honestly if I get done through the first playthrough, and I play it through again, I don't feel like putting it on hard or nightmare just for the challenge and/or achievement. It's kind of one of those "Been there, done that. Can't be arsed" type of things.Although I can't say that I'm totally against upping the difficulty.

Default. Only time I ever raised difficulty was for Sacred 2 because it was really embarassingly easy otherwise.

Normal or Easy depending on the difficulty curve. If I a game is ridiculously difficult and I find myself struggling then I play Easy but if I feel confident in my skills with the game I'll go with Normal. Barely ever touch Hard.

Interesting thing is that I realized today while playing DA2: the challenge IS the experience, at least for me - and that's why I made this thread. If there isn't any challenge in a game, it just seems utterly pointless... (like most of DA2 did for me - I mostly didn't want to pay attention to the story either, when the world there was effortless - maybe it all seemed bleak because it didn't require any thoughtful involvment to it?).

Though I'm not saying this stance is better or anything - just that I'd want to know if any Bioware gamers are likeminded... :)

Edit: but there were parts of DA2 that gave a mindful challenge - and around those I managed to pay more attention to the story as well - I managed to pay more attention when it prompted me so...

It varies wildly.

I have finished ME 1 with every class on Insanity, but now i play it exclusively on Casual. I have finished ME2 Insanity NG+ on Insanity with all classes except Soldier (who i have finished Insanity with, but not Insanity NG+). Now i occasionally play ME2 on Casual.

I played Fallout 3 on the easiest difficulty setting, and New Vegas on the hardest.

I have finished Origins on Nightmare without my character dying a single time, now i play Origins exclusively on Casual. I have finished DA2 on easy normal and hard but not Nightmare.

I finished Dark Souls without much trouble. If i could have turned the difficulty down, i would have though.

Casual. I won't play on harder settings until much much later and only if the game has something worth playing on that setting for.

Also I prefer story to difficulty over all. Plus a game that is just too difficult to defeat is not my cup of tea nor is it any fun.

An example of a game I played on highest difficulty was ME1 and ME2 I went back through the games after I beat them on easy and went for highest difficulty to earn the achievements related to them. This was because I was bored and if I think a game is worth playing through another time I will go through said game and complete it again for achievements alone.

I start at Normal, and then increase the challenge when I believe I have a decent grasp of the GUI and gameplay. But adding more to the Difficulty settings does not always equate to an increased challenge, but simply more frustration and reloading.

Usually second to hardest until I get a feel for it then I'll crank it up to hardest which you often have to finish the game before unlocking. It really depends on the game though, sometimes cranking it up to its hardest is more annoying than anything. I like a challenge but not when the CPU is going to be cheap on me.

Well, I'd like to add is that I was more looking for an overall preference - not just the settings. ME and Fallout 3 are easy in this sense - and even if those you played on the hardest setting, it doesn't necessarily mean you like more challenge. And that's why I added the CoD and HoMM addition to it in the first place.

It's more of a Ninja Gaiden vs Dragon Age 2 thread if you get my drift... :P
