ME3 Intro kid.

I'd already read about the kid in the GI mag, one of the ME3 articles that came after the one featuring Sheploo on the cover. So now I finally got to see it, I don't feel any differently than when I read it.
This is war, Shepard of all people knows this (at least he/she should). Tragedy is in his background as an Earthborn or Colonist. It is again in his military service: War Hero, Ruthless, Sole Survivor. Why he gets so emotionally affected by some random kid dying is a bit baffling.
Just seems like a weak attempt to make us feel tragedy in the intro scene.

But -- Yeah, I agree with you. It's cheesy. I'm not going to flip out about it, though.

Seeing the kid die is much more personal and effective than being told that people are dying. "Show, don't tell" is a fundemantal rule of great story telling.

I don't know why people are obsessing over this little boy (pedophiles?). It's not like it's a new concept. It's merely a kid, who Shepard notices, added for emotional reasons.

And that's the other thing, the only kid we've ever seen in the ME universe.
Up to this point I've been happy that they kept kids out of the picture. And, this is kinda why.

It's better than try to talk us into the seriousness of the situation. I'm looking at you, ME2.
And failing utterly.
I don't view the kid as a "cheap ploy to make us emotional;" you can say that about all fiction. I view it as a kid who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time...kind of like real life.

Felt the same way with TW2's 'dramatic' death scene of Foltest. The fact he had kids didn't make me care any more about him one bit.

It's an attempt at emotional narrative. Whether its effective, I dunno. I wouldn't say it's a bad idea, but using children always runs the risk of smarmy melodrama. I would have used a grown woman myself, better dialog than "everyone is dying"

So you'd rather stuff a woman in the fridge than a kid?
It'd still be fridge stuffing, wouldn't it? At least a child is more objectively vulnerable and innocent.

That scene, followed by the the Normandy abandoning a burning Earth, with the music they had in the background, is incredible imo.

Either way I credit them for killing the kid. It reflects the cold fact that war spares no one. But I have a hard time taking children seriously as a literary device. It's like killing kittens. They're so damn cute, they don't deserve to die.

On-topic: I think it worked well personally, nearly shed a tear as they were leaving earth. Although Clint Mansells work probably had a lot to do with that.

^ This. I teared up when I saw it the first time....and then again the second time. I assume depending on the circumstances of your real life it will be more or less poignant.

Yeah but, when did I ever forget this? Many innocent people died through ME1 and 2.
