No they don't...
Women can handle certain kinds of pain better but overall women have a lower pain-threshold than men.
You will never convince me of that when my life experience has taught me otherwise.

I would also like to know what a kid is doing in a military headquarters.
Well you did cross to a new building, so maybe you endeed up in the apartment of one of the people working there - it could be the kid's home.

He could be an image Shephard is creating due to Post Tramatic Stress disorder of himself/herself as a kid!
Think about it, a kid playing with a small toy Alliance spaceship outside, I can imagine Shep in that sutuation.
It would be an interesting take on things if whenever a Reaper is around Shep creates this image of his/herself as a child to emphasize just how dire things are. How if Shep doesnt stop the Reapers he/she may not have any children themselves.
The Galactic population will be zip, zero, nadda. No more love, art, culture, just nothing. Evolution reset to ZERO
I hope if you are Femshep it changes into a little girl.

You mean like in ME2's intro where they blasted Pressley into the afterlife? Or ME1 where they killed off Nihilus and Jenkins?
I'm sorry but Pressley wasn't really that important all things considered. You spoke to him probably once where he goes on about not being able to trust Nihilus because he's a Turian and that's about it. Nihilus was potentially interesting as could have been Jenkins, but in their appearance you hardly felt some sort of emotional attachment to them.
It would be different if we saw Anderson get disintegrated, because he trusts our Shephard (your mileage may vary when it comes to the reverse though). It would be different again if Joker carked it.
So no, it isn't at all like 'the same thing.'

I was actually wondering just that, and maybe they'll never show the femShep demo because it would be too obvious if the kid became a girl.

If you've seen the full leaked intro, I don't know how the kid's death doesn't choke you up.
Do you lack emotion? Or just sympathy/empathy (No, I cannot be bothered to care to tell the difference right now, though I'm sure someone will criticize me for it.)?
Sure, the kid technically doesn't exist, but...
Dude. That kid... for his death alone, every Reaper will suffer.
That's the crux for me. It didn't hit me so hard because:
a) I knew about it beforehand.
c) The whole Shephard 'look away' reaction just seemed exaggerated to me and became a cliched sort of reaction which actually further diminished the scene. Personally, I think of 'looking away' he should look down quickly and then raise his face with it full of a mix between rage and perhaps even despair. I think that might hit me a bit harder, but I don't know.

I think in some way Shepard blames him/herself though. I mean, you have the weight of the entire galaxy on your shoulders and with the kid dying it's the realization that you can't save everyone. It's like looking back at World War 2. You may hear 4 thousand people who died in a battle, and it just sounds like a statistic now, but to those who were there it was a life altering (and in some cases, ending) moment.
I like it, shows that Shepard is actually human and has emotion, felt like i was right along there with him. Plus....DAT MUSIC. Goosebumps every time i watch the last 2 minutes of the Earth demo.

I actually prefer the hallucination/pdsd theory, makes Shepard more of a likeable character and less of an unrealistic all powerful badass who kills thousands and shows no remorse. Hopefully he has more during the course of the game.
Agreed, especially after Bioware completely screwed up their chance to humanize Shepard in ME 2 with the whole Space Jesus Died For Your Sin(gularitie)s fiasco...

Also, did anybody notice the the only people who seemed to get on the shuttles were Alliance soldiers/people? He seems to be the only civilian that gets on, and nobody acknowledges him, as mentioned.

If you look, you can see at least one civilian get on. A woman with brown clothes is holding onto an Alliance soldier and they both get on.
I'm just speculating that even if the kid wasn't originally a hallucination, Shepard will start seeing him around the galaxy. Quiet moment? Kid will be in the corner. Something sad happens? Kid will be seen in the background.
EUGH, CAN IT BE MARCH 6 ALREADY?!

Does anyone really care that he dies?
I'd already read about the kid in the GI mag, one of the ME3 articles that came after the one featuring Sheploo on the cover. So now I finally got to see it, I don't feel any differently than when I read it.
This is war, Shepard of all people knows this (at least he/she should). Tragedy is in his background as an Earthborn or Colonist. It is again in his military service: War Hero, Ruthless, Sole Survivor. Why he gets so emotionally affected by some random kid dying is a bit baffling.
Just seems like a weak attempt to make us feel tragedy in the intro scene.
About that kid. I have talked to people who've been in wars. Dying is something soldiers have to live with. Doesn't stop them getting emotional about it. To stop that a soldier would have to have a brain alteration operation to remove certain emotions. Shepard get's emotional (and not overly emotional just emotional) because Shepard actually cares. The child reminds him of what is at stake. The child represents the very future that is about to be destroyed by the Reapers. This spurs him on.
Tregedy isn't something one gets used to. No one gets used to tragedy. People just deal with it. But in the heat of the moment, he will still be haunted by past tragedies and all the more determined to make sure the same doesn't happen to that child.
This isn't a cheap tactic. This is a good way of getting the audience to feel sympathy. It also makes Shepard appear (excuse the cliche) more human. That in and of itself is a good thing.
I wholeheartedly agree, Abraham.
If witnessing the death of a child doesn't emotionally stir people, I don't know what will.
A good friend of mine tried to rescue a child who was injured during a battle in Afghanistan while he was deployed. The kid didn't make it. My friend cried for weeks. He's a Marine and the toughest son-of-a-gun I know. No matter how much death you've seen and dealt, you never just "get over" the death of an innocent child. Anyone who thinks otherwise obviously has never even thought about how such an event would affect them.
BioWare gave us this sacrifice early on in the game to let us know that nothing is sacred, and that the losses can only get worse. This time, it might be that cute little kid you saw running around...but next time, you might have to kill one of your squaddies yourself because s/he went and got him/herself Indoctrianted.
Edit: As far as the hallucination theory goes, the thought is very intriguing. It would make Shep a bit more relatable as well as add a bit more tension to the story. Though I'm not crazy about BioWare milking it to death if that is the case, which would make Shep look like a crazy kook, seeing this kid everywhere he goes.

That reminds players that longer you take your sweet time, more and more people die in entire galaxy and that you can't save them all.
That scene with Clint's music is just perfect.
