I always imagine them being the crazy survivalist type who'd use their boomstick if a mere mortal does something like getting even remotely close to their propertah, but would let a man with sunglasses, an earpice and a dark coat do a cavity search with no questions asked because that proves that they're good, patriotic citizens.
No idea how that leap happens in my mind, though. Scary.

Yeah they shouldn't close their curtains at night either. What are they really up to when they claim to be "sleeping", if they have nothing to hide then it isn't an invasion of privacy right?

EA wants to know what you play, so they can sell you those products. Those fiends!

Actually, it's highly likely it's teenagers or younger. By the time you hit your twenties, you realize that you probably shouldn't be handing over your tax documents to some random stranger who has no need to see them.
Not unless you want to wake up one morning and discover you have 18 maxed out credit cards in Arizona and 3 cars in Wyoming in your name.
Because, let's be serious here, it hasn't been 6 months since Lulzsec stole a significant amount of data from EA-Bioware. Along with Sony, Bethseda, and a half-dozen other companies.
So I'm not real sure why anyone would shrug and go "Oh, ok" and open the door wide open for people to make their lives incredibly miserable for years.
As far as Steam goes...it doesn't scan Tax files, not real sure why people keep bringing Steam up unless they don't understand the problem here.

Only brought it up to say "Oh, and it even lets us have offline functionality, as opposed to something else I could name" myself
Maaay have been in the other thread, though....

Of my four favorite computer games other than Mass Effect that I still play regularly,
2 are seven plus years old and require no internet connection, though they have an optional online component.
1 was made by a company that stopped supporting the game 2 years later and went out of business 2 years after that. It requires an authorization server to play online, but the company gave the authorization server to the community before they went under. If they hadn't, the game would not be playable online anymore.
1 has a company-run authorization server that has been down for nearly six months.
So... why would I want a single-player game to require a connection to a company server to play? All that means is they get to decide when I am no longer allowed to play the game I purchased.

You should note though that I remember when STEAM came out, everyone was hating on it (for reasons that I really can't be bothered to get into, but one of the big reasons was the whole 'digital copy and STEAM owning your games instead of you owning them' arguments going on.) and the service wasn't that great or as well funded as it is today.
Personally I think Origin has some benefits from what I've seen from it (namely in how they work their servers and downloads and how they handle users internet.)
Also it is an easy platform for EA to use to make things better for SWTOR (social networking and communicating, updates, additional content etc.)
So yeah. Assuming Origin doesn't phase out or die (and I don't think it will) I think people will get use to it in a few years time and they'll be able to use it beneficially.
There are probably a number of economical reasons (as stated by Gabe Newell even!) as to why having more than one digital distribution platform is a good thing.
EDIT: I just want to say that I'm not a fan or hater/criticizer of Origin. But I think it isn't as bad as people think it is and I don't really see it destroying the gaming industry, STEAM or anything silly like that.

...which is not going to use Origin at all, as far as I know.
Besides there's no talk about Origin destroying the gaming industry. It's about destroying our PRIVACY and the fact that personal data is, you know, personal and not public.
But I suppose some people are just still too young or inexperienced to see the true value of that. And I don't mean that as an insult, I've been there myself about a decade ago, it's just a period of life everyone goes through. Problem with it is, it can come back to bite you in the butt if you're careless.

Also, EA has a dirty, dirty reputation for invasive programs (SPORE) and has also recently changed it's EULA so that by agreeing you will be waiving your right to join a class action lawsuit which paves the way for them to make their programming more and more invasive while simultaneously seriously hampering your ability to fight it legally.

Unfortunately there is no way to prevent this using datamining software as it's just going to send them a list of every game we have on our registry for sure, and depending on the parameters they have set, possibly every piece of media we have and every website we visit.
I think "not installing it" prevents any incursion of privacy quite nicely.

Which isn't an option if you need it to play the game. And unless you can somehow arrange that no one at all buys the game becuase it requires origin, me not installing it does nothing.

That's a decision an individual has to make. I sure as Baator won't allow an incursion of my privacy for a computer game, no matter how much I wanted it at start. I don't let the person selling groceries come around and rummage through my fridge either.
Sure, I'll feel sore about it, but as long as enough people share the view, and by the looks of it, many are outraged, stuff may actually happen.

Let's look at this another way....
Whatever was wrong with the old days where you could just INSTALL a game, off a disk, and not have to worry about DRM, cludging up your PC with 3rd party software, online authorisation etc etc etc.
And don't say "since piracy" - because god knows DRM doesn't work at preventing it. Skyrim isn't even OUT yet, and it's already been pirated on the xbox.
Actually, Ubisoft's version of Origin (I forget the name) has proven exceptionally good at defeating piracy, but that one does require a constant connection to the Ubisoft servers to play SP games.
didn't stop me =P
