Beside the point; magi all start in the tower, so whether you want your pre origin backstory to be in the city or not, you can never truly have a 'city elf mage'.

Even Bioware's old games rewarded your character for a certain personality.

Baldur's Gate for instance rewarded your character with good responses if he was friendly polite and somewhat naive. And it made sense in the game world that he would be. Towards the end of the game you were rewarded if you acted suspicious and distrustful [Like, to those who remember, when the Shapeshifters took the form of Gorion and Elminster and, if you trusted them, they led you into a massive ambush, if you didn't, you could deal with them then and there and the ambush is nothing but fodder to be brushed aside]Posted Image

Baldur's Gate 2 PC dialogue was for the most part extremely snarky ("I suppose you have some way of me opening the magic door besides banging my head on it?" and most of the responses were of a sarcastic or humorous nature, and oftentimes they got you the same reaction as the polite friendly responses.

Throne of Bhaal's PC dialogue was mostly written like your character was a badass and he knew it. Child of Bhaal this Child of Bhaal that, etc.

One way or another dialogue will have your character acting a certain way or putting things in a way you may or may not like. The real answer to your question is we don't know yet.

How early do they take the kids away to the tower? If it's later than seven or so, proud nomad vs. ghetto dweller will make a difference, personality-wise. I'd gotten the impression that Dalish mages did exist, outside the tower, and not selectable as an origin, thus making Tower elven mages from the alienage.

Not that it matters. You can just replace 'city elf mage' with 'double helping of second class citizen'. :-)

I dunno what all this talk of Dalish Tower mages is about; the Dalish have their own separate mage tradition and Dalish youth with the gift aren't taken to the Tower, for the most part. The vast majority of elven Tower mages are city elves.

They take away children to the tower from any age they show magic talent and they do go around the cities and actively look or so I'm under that impression. Anyone that does not show or tell of their ability and uses it is considered a heretic (what was that word?) and hunted down by templars.. Which is why your city elf is highly unlikely to be a mage though it's possible but wouldn't make sense for Bioware to make it possible.. he he. I do wish they had given us Dalish mages (probably a lot like traditional druids) though, but maybe in a sequel or something...

Though if you look at it another way ALL elven mages are city elves since they come from the alienage... You just can't start the game there.

edit: Dang not the only one who explained that... :pinched:

Well, there will probably be a good few options presented to you throughout the game but the reason why games usually stick with 3-4 arch types (whereas endings and other things can be adjusted with how you switch between them during dialogues) is that it would require ridiculous amounts of writing and voice work to fit every type you can imagine.

And while you can certainly pretend to be shy, I don't think it's an option (or much of an option) in an RPG like this. After all, your job is to become badass enough to beat down an army of plague monsters and an arch demon, not to mention whatever general villainy you come across, making it rather silly if the great leader of a massive army is meek and scared. Because although you plan on making your character awesome in the end, it would be necessary to keep the meek option going all the way through once you've started, as RPGs shouldn't dictate when your character stops being meek and starts being awesome.

I believe you can choose some options during origins that might be a shy/meek response but might act out a little differently:

*Slight origin spoilers follow for the super sensitive*

Such as killing/not killing the humans as Dalish or choosing not to fight as city elf

*End of slight spoilers*

In the end, we'll have to play the game to see for certain :)

Except you don't need to have the city elf origin to be a city elf; what makes you a city elf is where you were born.

Origins are meant to show off different aspects of life in Ferelden, but your character is more than your origin.

It varies. IIRC, most people show their magical ability right before puberty, but it can be as young as 5 or as old as 17. [/quote]
