I often find myself using the Diligence armor set for my tank in the early game. It is very easy to get and the gloves and boots are better than most massive/heavy gloves and boots. I think the set is often overlooked, although it is probably the best armor for the first few quests. Find Valena so Owen offers the boots, then travel to Orzammar and get the gloves. The chestpiece isnt really worthit, but since you get it in the very first rooms of the ash quest ruined temple you might just grab it. Other than that, I usually just scramble together what is best without going for any complete item sets - the set bonus usually isnt worth sacrificing a way better armor piece.

As for the rest, I usually use stuff added by mods. Although most of the weapon and armor the mods add are a tad overpowered, they bring much needed variety.
For example: Phoenix Armor + Elvenhan blade (main hand) + Rose's Thorn with Adonnay Weapon Replacer (off hand), Elvenhan close up. The Rose's Thorn is still the best weapon for a DW rogue, be it as main weapon or as off-hand weapon and it always finds a way to be equipped by my rogues.

I agree. Armor of Diligence is an excellent early- to mid-game set., as is Varathorn's armor (from Ironbark quest).

I've always thought Leliana looks great in armor called The Shadow of the Empire (from Orzammer merchant). Reasonably good piece of armor with very nice design.

I really like the Diligence set. Practically free, bonus to health regeneration, looks nice, doesn't require a helmet to get the set bonus. Low requirements, so some rogues can wear it.

Evon the Great's Mail and Wade's Superior Dragonscale gloves and boots make a good set, too, particularly for Awakening, where you can get a pleasant (and cheap) bonus to Constitution out of any armor with rune slots.

I like the Warden-Commander's Armor set, myself. Generally wear that and the Helm of Honnleath (which shares the design of the "Grey Warden Helmet") in Origins, now that I've got Soldier's Peak.
