Forgive me, but could the selection screen simply have been stripped out for the beta considering your squad members are predetermined for it?

The fact that squadies can die is not a surprise or should be a spoiler. It is an obvious thing from what we have seen in ME2 SM. The fact that they can means that their is a possibility where they don't die. Besides I bet that this so called, "spoiler info" that you have does not contain all the possibilities that could happen.
