At least that's how I read it.

Yeah, that's how I understood it as well.
But the sheer absurdity of trusting Udina riles me.
Plus the fact that in years and years of being a top-secret Alliance officer and then Council Spectre, Ashley or Kaidan had never heard of Cerberus' top wetwork agent, had never read Anderson's report on the events of Retribution featuring Kai Leng, had never checked the dossiers of known Cerberus agents, and had never once questioned Udina's motives despite him being a slippery manipulator.
And then they have the gall to accuse Shepard of betraying them?
It's all so ludicrously contrived. If you're going to throw in a traitor scenario, at least don't make it reliant upon the traitor being incredibly dumb.
Also, re: fighting Kai Leng and avoiding deaths, that's an interesting interpretation of the scenes. I wasn't sure what to make of it, since it's all very jumbled.
But yeah, there does seem to be a cutscene where Kai Leng is forced to activate the explosives and then runs off with Prothy, leaving Shepard and the squad alive.
Of course, if the VS confrontation is before that...
(I'm just hoping I don't have to make that choice. 'Cause that choice *sucks*.)
