So I am in the Deep Roads now.  Game time 161 hours and counting.  I've heard that the Deep Roads is dull and boring for some people.  I'm finding it enjoyable so far.  I've done Aeducan Thaig, Caridin's Cross, and just starting Ortan's Thaig.

I'm level 17 now, and one thing I've found is these Hurlock Emissaries are a lot deadlier than they used to be.  I would attack, and Morrigan would wind up dead in 5 seconds.  I didn't know why.  Then I really paid attention, and the Hurlock Emissary would cast drain health, crushing prison, and curse of mortality in rapid succession on her.  LOL.  Devious little bugger.  So, I just cast force field and bum rush them now.  Don't wanna take any chances.

Actually, it's quite nice to be level 17.  We went through Caridin's Cross today, took out the Ogre Alpha, Deepstalker Matriarch, and Revenant pretty much without a scratch ... thanks to misdirection hex and cone of cold.  Morrigan just got Death Hex, so I'll try that out tomorrow.

Anyway, I'm enjoying Deep Roads so far.  I know how people feel though.  Last week I was in Orzamarr for 4 or 5 days and finally had to get out of there.  I missed the sun. :)

I love the Deep Roads - easily my favorite part of the DA games. Something about them is just... alluring - probably the danger, rich history, and sense of mystery is what does it for me.

Also, the Dead Trenches... you will not soon forget the experiences of that place. I will say no more than that.

I really like the deep roads too ^_^

I remember the first time I played Origins, that I reached Orzammar after reading all codex entries, intrigued about the dangers of the underground caves ^_^ When you finally have the chance to explore the place, it really keeps to the its name. The sense of danger, the enormous map, and the great boss battles made the experience memorable. It was surprisingly watered down in DA2, not only because it was a lot easier, but for the weird colours and design of the place; they seemed like a confortable and colorful place to me.

Anyway, good luck for the last maps -they are by far the most challenging sections ;)

Orzammer is a pretty interesting section of the game. Lots of intrigue and politicking going on. The dwarven (dwarvish?) worldview is somehow both comical and tragic. Definitely kept me on my toes going through there on my first playthrough.

Some pretty cool items to be found in the Deep Roads, too.

I dislike the Orzammar part of the Orzammar quest, unless I decide to take part in the Proving, in which case that's a bit of fun. But I can't wait to get into the Deep Roads. As greengoron says, it's an experience not to be forgotten, especially the first time through the Dead Trenches --though that still gets my hackles up even on my 5th time through. . .

Similarly, I actually don't mind the Fade sequence either, now that I've got the hang of it. I like the challenge of finding ways to defeat all those enemies, all by myself, no matter what fighting style I've chosen --and of course, stat boosts ahoy. The Deep Roads are the same way with all the loot, XP and coin you end up with when you come out of there.

I like the Deep Roads well enough. There are a couple tough boss battles and yes, the magery gets bad down there. You might give Morrigan Spell Shield. I dislike the blue bubble, but there's a mod called Personal Annoyance Remover that gets rid of it. I usually give all my mages Spell Shield and Dispel so they can help out with the templar'ing.

The deep roads are my favourite part of the game hands down, the atmosphere is just perfect. There's nothing that even comes close to that in Dragon Age 2 sadly, the deep roads there just feel linear, I don't get any sense of being in a vast network of tunnels and thaigs.

And that's the thing. In DAO it worked perfectly with the lore, however DA2 and - maybe - future DAs, which tend to have the awesome Awesome-button™, streamlining™ and accessibility™ features, you may be the first and the last time in those good roads in a good and lore appropriate way.

You have class 1000 resistance to boredom.  Anyone who claims the Deep Roads are boring did not take into account people like you who drag a single game 80 hours past the 80 it takes to do absolutely every side quest, quest, and fight.

LOL.  I was wondering if anyone would notice that.

Yesterday I met Ruck.  I must have stared at the screen for 15 minutes trying to decide whether to lie to his mother or tell her the truth.  Ironically, it probably doesn't make a difference either way.  I'm just like that.

With DA2 I get the feeling that the deep roads just weren't so important. PLUS... not all parts of the Deep will be creepy I think ;) I hope DA3 does something that makes DAO look light hearted.

I think people find the Deep Roads tedious because they go on so long. Aeducan Thaig is optional (as is another you may come to later) but counting them there are six locations in the Deep Roads alone. Add this on to the several hours it took you to do the Orzammar section, and this means the Dwarf treaty takes far longer than any other treaty mission (possibly unless you count the Sacred Ashes and the Arl of Redcliffe as the same mission I guess). If you've already done a runthrough or two then it does feel like this section really drags.

That said, it really is atmospheric and immersive. It has the feeling of scale that I thought the Brecillian Forest entirely lacked. For that reason I still appreciate and enjoy it, even though I've spent more hours in them over several playthroughs than I care to count.

It does tend to drag on a bit if you've been down there a while, but fortunately the scenery is diverse enough (natural caverns, abandoned thaigs, Bownammar and the Anvil's hiding place) that it doesn't feel like you're just slogging it through recycled areas one after another.

In my opinion, going through the Fade in the Circle Tower is a lot worse.

Well, that was disturbing. I just finished the Dead Trenches. Don't think I'll ever get that chant out of my head.

Thanks, BioWare, for scarring me for life.

Right??? Every time that disembodied voice popped up I thought, "hey, crazy Dwarf lady, if you're trying to help, that's not helping!" I was sure that any minute she was going to snap and leap out from wherever she was hiding and attack us with some kind of Half-Broodmother Madness Attack, and then eat us. Bruh.

Man, that was annoying.  I just killed Branka.

I hate it when something unforeseen happens ... like a game crash, or an Orange enemy splitting into four parts.  Both happened to me during this fight.  And that freaking Caridin didn't even help?!?!?!

Then I get back to the shaperate and the curator stiffs me on the reward.  Then I find out I "failed" the quest to do right by my ... "son" ???

Err ... anyway ... Harrowmont is king now.  Aeducan's son Bhelan is dead.  That was a fun fight. :)

The Orzamarr quests are all over.  The Deep Roads were surprisingly enjoyable to me.  There was literally a boss battle around every corner.  I like that.

I think on a first playthrough the Deep Roads are fine because the Orzammar story line is a strong one, and it has some of the most memorable moments in the game (Ruck and Hespith, particularly). It also has some of the most challenging fights in the game. If you've been through it all before, the long dungeon hack starts to get a bit wearying, though.

My first playthrough, I thought the Sacred Ashes quest was the dullest of the major quests, but it's relatively easy to rush through on autopilot on subsequent playthroughs, as long as you wrote down the solution to the final puzzle.

I warned you. It shames even the most horrific videogames I've played (Silent Hill included).

My experiences in the Dead Trenches will haunt me (and you) forever. I knew the darkspawn were evil creatures from the beginning, but I never realized just how evil they truly were until I met Hespith for the first time.

I can't even begin to imagine the sheer horror of what the poor woman and her clanmates went through... nor do I ever wish to.

And that's why it took me so long to spare Branka (and then it was just for the achievement and followed by a reload). *Brrrrr* Evil woman.

Yup. It's taking my most heartless and self-centered character to pull that one off. "Disgust? Compassion? Golems!" :alien:

How exactly do you get to 161 hours? Even with doing every quest, it shouldn't take much longer than 80.

I really don't know.  I'm right at the end of the Urn quest and game time is 177 hours.  I micro-manage all battles and pause alot.  I think the game time equals real time, so when paused, the clock keeps ticking.  Plus I explore a lot and look at the scenery.  Plus I spend a lot of time deciding what armor to outfit each character with.  I guess I think about things way more than the average player.

Pausing definitely does not stop the clock. If I have to pause for anything, my game time has still increased when I unpause. I still don't think I've finished the whole game in over 115 hours, though. But I don't pause much in battle, except to activate sustained or special talents that won't fit in my presets, or throw bombs or something. I rely on AI most of the time to direct my companions.

And the weird thing is, I was totally like, "meh" during that entire sequence. I'm probably one of the few.
