I'm torn choosing between Stalker and Swashbuckler, and was wondering if anyone has any idea what the average thac0 figures are for monsters in tob?

Does AC become completely irrelevant in tob? This could influence my decision quite a bit. I remember once playing a swashy in tob, but it was years ago and I can't remember how well AC worked in preventing damage.

A swashbuckler could reasonably attain...

-2 base AC from armor
-6 from DEX
-16 at level cap from class
-18 from Ring of Gaxx
-19 with Vhailor's Helm (which I'd use anyway for imp.haste/timestop fun)
-20 with Cloak of Sewers
-21 with Ring of Earth Control
-23 from Hell Trial
-29 with Improved Evasion (however this goes above the cap I think, but can allow different cloak/ring)

What was the AC cap in BG2 anyway? Iirc I remember getting something like -24 or -25 AC with my years-ago swashbuckler (using improved evasion). What's the actual hard cap? Does AC below -20 even have any "effect"?

Let's assume the cap is -24 AC, would this be enough to actually use swashbuckler as a front line tank in TOB? For example, Firkraag has -12 thac0 if I'm not mistaken, so an AC of -24 would be, in essence, 60% damage reduction. Do monsters in ToB have MUCH higher thac0s (like -20)?

Whereas a Stalker would get backstab, critical strike, 5 APR default, and most importantly...

-40% dmg reduction from Hardiness
-65% dmg reduction with Armor of Faith
-85% dmg reduction with Defender of Easthaven (if needed)

Which basically makes for an immortal tank, as far as physical damage is concerned.

The AC cap is -24 + weapon style modifier (-1 or -2 for * or ** in single weapon style) + attack type modifiers (like -5 against slashing weapons)

The swashbuckler gets UAI, and with that, he gets a number of different perks, like for example spell scrolls. With these the swashbuckler would without doubt be the superior fighter (arcane magic ruling the game and all that). Without burning resources, the swashbuckler still has versatility. (dispel on hit with Carsomyr/SotM, easy MR boost, traps etc)

THAC0s (unmodded - from Shadowkeeper, so without consideration to their weapons, kits or proficiencies):
Draconis: -3/-11
Yaga-Shura: -10
Balthazar: -9
Gromnir Il-Khan: -2
Abazigal: -15/-13

Another thought is if you know that your PC is going to be a Swashie in a party of six, you can use NPC level 1 to have Imoen and Nalia as pure mages (or wild mages or sorcerers) throughout SoA and ToB, rather than waste XP's on their initial Thief levels. I would rather have a little more magical ability facing Amelyssan than the extra insurance against physical damage.

On another note, how big can my party be while still hitting xp cap? I'd actually like to hit the cap well before the final battle, so I actually get some use out of it.

I'd estimate 3-4 (charname included), but which one is it?

Four is the absolute most. Three if you want to hit the cap very early on. You can reach the cap with a party of five, but by then you will be at the endgame.
