My characters seem to be missing experience points. I mean, the ones that I don't use as much in battle. One time, Leliana was ready to level up to level 9, but I wasn't using her at the time, so I didn't level her up right away. Then, I want and did a huge long battle, and I came back, and Leliana still had zero experience points listed towards the next level (level 10). She was still at the "ready to level up" mode, but somehow, it still said 0/6000 to the next level. Is this supposed to happen?

When you play and level it auto levels up your chars. If you do more than one level they will have those points added up when you level them. I tend to rotate them out some just to keep the levels all pointed out incase I need to switch to them as there are a few points where you have to use a few of them.

Wait, they autolevel?! I specifically did not mark that space that says autolevel, on purpose. But I guess the reason they aren't at the same level as my main character is because they don't get the extra bonus for killing things, right?
Hold on, it didn't autolevel her. I took her into my party for one minute, and it said 0/6000, ready to level up to level 9. OK. So I came back after Redcliffe Castle and guess what, same thing (0/6000, ready to level up). It did NOT show her new experience from all the enemies i killed.

As in you get the xp and so do they keep up one level behind you. You still have to spend the points they get unless you click on that tab to auto spend at leveling. They will allways stay one level lower than you. Only way to beat this is keep those that are higher level in your part at all times.

What? Now I'm really confused. I thought my main char is higher level because of xp bonuses in combat.

Let's say you are at level 8 and everyone else in your party is level 8. Now you and the three with you level up to level 9. Everyone else will still be level 8.
You and those three level up to 10. The others in your party are now level 9.
You and your main three level up to 11. The others are now level 10. Et cetera.
It's designed so that everyone in your party will always be at your level or within 1 level of you, so you can switch back and forth without worrying about them being too weak after sitting in the camp for too long.

Oh. But they didn't lose any experience, did they? To me, it looked as if Leliana gained no experience at all.

The characters that stay in camp don't gain experience when the characters in your party do, but they gain the missing levels once you go out with them again.

Go out? I went out to a town (Redcliffe) and just swapped my characters into the party. Does that count?

You do not actually have to go out of the camp to level them up. Go to the character screen and push the left and right arrows to switch between characters. Push the Level Up button at the bottom. Yes, any location outside of the camp counts.
