Well, part of the problem with the Warden returning would be they didn't save your looks in the save files but as said, that would be easily fixed with a helmet... as for the voice... other than annoying combat banter the Warden didn't HAVE a voice... so to give them one now wouldn't be a problem.  Just a voice for each gender of each race, maybe two elf voices per gender, city elf and dalish elf......  Now, the only thing I question is that if your Warden went off with Morrigan, and Morrigan returns, why isn't your Warden with her?

1) The Warden had a very, very good chance of dying. Including the Warden in a very important role in DA3 would essentially negate all Warden characters who didn't go through Morrigan's ritual. That's not the same as ME3 negating any Shepard who was so dumb with his choices that he got himself and everyone else killed.

Great, so dying was one choice with the consequence being your Warden is dead and out of the picture. For other people, their Wardens would presumably still be alive. So why should they be effectively treated as being dead or otherwise out of the picture? And no, giving a Warden (Orlesian or Fereldan) a role in a  future game wouldn't negate the US choice- cause its entirely possible your Warden turned down the DR and is still alive or that you had your Orlesian Warden deal with Morrigan in Witch Hunt.In which case, if Morrigan were to show back up in the future, the Orlesian or Hero of Ferelden Warden already has a history with her.

Hell, Morrigan tells you in that case to go tell all the other Wardens to be on guard for whats to come in the future. So if in a future DA game, there is some Warden-centric plot line or some Morrigan -centric plot line, I'd like the option at least to be playing as my Warden for maximum involvement.

staindgrey wrote...
2) A big part of your love for the Warden is nostalgia and comparison to DA2. What will happen when DA3 inevitably gets something wrong about your Warden? Or attaches a voice that you didn't like? Or forces _____ onto his/her character for the sake of plot, even though your Warden wouldn't do that? Bringing the Warden back only brings more potential problems with older fans of the series, rather than more positives.

Thats true, which is why I wouldn't want them to just mandate the Warden coming back no matter what, but to only bring the Warden back if it made sense based on the story and ideally as a PC, even if it was temporary.  They obviously aren't going to bring back the Warden for a full game, but it would be nice if they had a plot line in the future best dealt with by the Warden or any other old PC for that matter, they'd try to bring them back in a playable way to have them deal with the consequences that way. That would go for Hawke too- if in some future DA game, there was some plot or storyline brought up which would have a more engaging emotional perspective if Hawke was the one dealing with it, I'd want that too. Same goes for the Warden. I just hope that BioWare doesn't pull a Neverwinter Nights where they just have a new PC every game and pull an Aribeth type scenario with old companions and PCs.

staindgrey wrote...
3) Rather than begging for a character, people should be arguing the gameplay aspects they want. This is a story about Thedas, not about the Warden or about Hawke. All signs point to a more global affair, outside of Ferelden and Kirkwall both. Wouldn't it be better to explore these new places and people without being tied down by the restrictions of DA:O's events?

But Hawke and the Hero of Ferelden and the Orlesian Warden Commander are all part of Thedas. Just as much as any old companion characters like Alistair or Morrigan or Isabela. Hell, in Witch Hunt, the main thrust of Morrigan's warning to the Warden is that they need to get ready for whatever big huge change is coming to the world. That seems to hint the Wardens might have some role to play in the future. So if the story called for it, I'd prefer to be able to play out some of the new stories in Thedas with an old PC- again, if it made sense for the story.  I don't want DA3, 4, 5, 6 and so forth with one PC, but to just abandon every old PC to a Madden like roster change seems rather myopic.  So yes, I would like future DA games tied down by the "restrictions" of Origins or DA2, considering those restrictions should be the foundation for the version of Thedas I have in my game world. Those restrictions would hopefully be in the form of consequences and reactivity to player choice.

So sure, if BioWare wants to do new PCs every game, then go for it. But have completely new companion characters then too and don't try to retcon old companion characters and bring them back while effectively handwaving any interactions they had with old PCs or marginalizing old PCs.

staindgrey wrote...
I just don't think it's fair to compare DA to other franchises, when it's pretty clearly taking another route. A Warden cameo if he/she is alive? I'd be cool with that. Making the Warden the protagonist if he/she doesn't fit? That would only degrade DA3's value, IMO. I'd like my Warden to stay in DA:O and my memories.

Sure, I don't want them ****ting all over old PCs either by bringing them back where they don't belong. Same goes for old companion characters. But I'm also saying that BioWare has a potentially very unique opportunity as the series goes along to bring back old PC's, dependent on the player's choices, such that they can put them into stories where they WOULD fit, instead of being forced to play with a new PC in a scenario or storyline which would have been more interesting or engaging or relevant with an old PC.

I'm pretty sure they actually did save the face morph sliders in the import. Considering they changed the face morph systems, I don't know if its any use, but I'm pretty sure the data from Origins is there.
As for voice, that is an issue, which is why I'd like it playing as the Warden even if temporarily have it be a cameo so brief they don't need to speak.

And thats a big problem, IMO. They'll more than likely just write them off in that case, which is a gigantic cop out.

well this article has definitely changed my mind. I will not purchase DA 3 or other DA DLC. You would think bioware had learned from their mistakes; yet... Oh well I will just rent it when it comes to Blockbuster

You are childish. Bioware wants to create a world with many stories, but you're so caught up on the warden that you've closed your mind to all other possibilites.

As much as some fans bag games like Final Fantasy for being linear and just rehashing the same storylines, you guys sure show your double standards when Bioware tries to do something new with their sequels and you bag on them..

?? what?? I would flame u right now...but seriously, u aren't worth it. However, their fan base want more stuff as regards the grey wardens. DA 2 was obviously lame; MOTA also sucked too. Ultimately the majority of BSN customers want quality stuff. If Bioware does not provide quality stuff the majority of their customer base want, they will simply just rent their games when firms like blockbuster get their product in stock. We will see how long the company lasts when this is done

I agree.

Yeah, it's cool to meet a new protagonist, but him fixing the Warden's and Hawke's messes will be just dumb. But that's just my honest opinion.

This.

That's exactly one of my points.

A New Protagonist has no place in anything going on, it's out of place to bring him/her into all of this(well at least imo)

Without involving myself further in the argument beyond the opinion I already voiced ...

I see that the looks of the Warden are actually saved on the Bioware website - at least the character portrait is. Now, I'm not sure whether this portrait is uploaded as an image file created by the client, or whether the server generates it from a string of numbers received from the game ... if it's the latter, it should be fairly easy to build a new character out of it. It'd just require the game to read data from the Bioware website and not just from saves.

Which would actually be a smarter solution for not just Dragon Age but Mass Effect as well. I see Dragon Age keeps publishing tons of useless stuff like achievements and current equipment on the Bioware website - but people who want to import history from their older games still depend on actually having them on the same HD. Meaning people like me who just bought a new computer are outta luck. Why is that? Can't this stuff get stored on a reliable online repository as well, given that our accounts have to connect to the database anyways to be able to play?

So much for the technical aspect, anyhow. Commence discussing. :D

You do make a really good point though, I love how my rewards and crap are saved on a database for the shooters I play.  It makes it so much easier to move around and play with other people.  It is so devestating to lose like 50 hours of gameplay.  My husbands level 50 character for dead island got corrupted and I thought he was going to have an aneurysm.  I have my warden on a thumbdrive for my 360 and I'm so scared its going to blow up...or something else equally bad.

New protagonist + meaningful cameos of the Warden and Hawke (with the right looks, or at the very least masked, ex. wearing a helmet) and of old party members = best possible solution for me.

Although if a player had a character (say, Anders) die in his saved games he shouldn't found him again alive and well in DA3. It robs our choices of impact and makes C&C feel useless. If the survival of certain characters is canonical, don't give them the chance to die (like Liara in the ME).

Why not have three way game, you can import both Warden and Hawke and then create a new one too. Then in the game you get to play it from all the characters point of you. Three different storylines which can cross at some point depending on the choises you make. Friends or foes. Also choises would determine which character would be at the end. Would make awesome game.

To be honest I wouldn't have liked it if they made DA 2 about the Grey Warden.

DA:O covered the Grey Warden's story well enough (mind you I'd have liked it even more if they had made a second expansion to DA:O. That would have been cool.)

But yeah, I just don't see why having a whole second game devoted to the Grey Warden would be that good, I enjoyed the journey with my GW and all but DA:O was enough.

As for the Warden's story though (which is what this thread is about) I suppose they did end it rather abruptly/not well enough. I'm still scratching my head thinking of how they are going to conclude what happened/happens to the GW.

I agree with your whole post, but this particularly stands out to me. Sure, a couple of cameos can be very cool if done well, but please restrict yourself almost exclusively to non-companions to non-companions with scarcely a non-companion to companion and especially companion to non-companion to be found. And no companions to companions at all unless you master it, please. All in all DA2 plain went overboard, which resulted in way too much "hearsay" to make it work. And Zevran's uglification sure as hell didn't help change my opinion on this.

This right here.. It's seems like a watered down drink. I don't see how a New PC makes this story better..hell IMO it can't.
I loved the Warden, didn't like Hawke very well.....now this guy/gal....and they know what about whats been going on?.....thats right..not jack! Yet they meet some of the people that Hawke and Warden knew.......yea..real coolImage IPB

What you all have to know is the guy that is doing the story does not want the PCs to get in the way of the story and don't good PCs  help build the story...thats what I thought, I don't give a heep about the story without a PC that doesn't know jack about the story or the people in it, it's just a slap in the face.

Tossing the Warden aside is the big reason why the DA franchise is sputering now. Origins jut promised too much of carrying over a story to new games and it didn't happen. In consequence, a lot of fans have become disenfranchised and moved on. If people didn't want to keep playing their same character over again than why is ME3 scheduled to be one of the biggest games in 2012?

^ I good point. I wanted to continue playing with my Warden. I had no desire to move on to a new character. I have always disliked the fact that after a long and hard playtrough when I have finally made my character somebody with skills for little people to admire the game ends. And the cycle starts again with new game and new character. Like in NWN2 when you get to have the castle and village under you command and finally everything is put together (both castle and village) then the game ends. So you get to have that power moment only for a few minutes. Fustrating. Thats why I was looking for to continue adventuring with my Warden to see through all the open plot twists from Origins unfold. That storyline surely had some massive possibilities to make a new good game despite some people claim.

I love the journey to become that powerful person - that's the most interesting thing to me. So I like the idea of a new protagonist in every game. At the end of a game you're often super powerful and I'm just not that interested in becoming even more super powerful.

Just my opinion on this.

It's still fully possible to negate the power achieved from an earlier adventure despite using the same character. Look at the Metroid series, where Samus finds unique ways of losing all of her upgrades near the beginning of the story, then goes off to find them, and on the way finds NEW ways to be powerful, specifically for this game.

It would be like if the Warden were captured by the Chantry or some other group, then barely gets out alive through the aide of ________, and vitrually has to start over with a new cast of characters and a different part of Thedas.

Not that I want the Warden to return, but it's a possibility with the Warden, Hawke, or any character in any game, really.

During this last days i have kept thinking of the wardens story.

I want to see the story of the warden continue through the next game and if it is going to be like this then:

DA3 will focus on the war between mages and templars and with a little bit of a qunari invasion, meanwhile you learn of the next threat that will be the gap to DA4

Then in DA4 it will focus on the threat and during this time bioware has enough time to wrap up everything regarding the warden so there will be no doubt that this will be the end of the wardens story and a very good ending.

this is just simple brainstorming,

But what i truly want to see in DA3 is that you could play as either hawke or the hero of ferelden and there struggle to establish peace.

I agree with this. I'd rather have an extra character creator for the Warden/Hawke's appearance if they show up, than having their face hidden behind a helmet. Cameo seems a bit pointless if you can barely tell who it is.

I really only want to see Hawke again in either DLC or an expansion just like the Warden. I want to see a different part of Thedas through the eyes of a new PC.

My Warden is at level 35. What else is there for him to do? Maybe he can go for immortality like in the Master series of D & D. Oh wait the master series ends at level 36. I guess I would have go into the Immortals set.

Same with Hawke already at level 25 what is left for me to do?

I think they should always have something in front of the Warden's face. Like the begining of ME2 where Shep's face is behind a plume of steam.
The scene: Cassandra could say something like 'Varric we got another report about Hawke and the Warden!' and then have her hold up a report and behind her is the fade to the scene where the report obscures the Warden's face but you can see everything else. This is just an example. What I'm saying is, BW should handle the Warden's face like US TV handles nudity.
As for VO, instead of' hard ass, snark, and nice', you could replace it with different food groups and select what muffled responses and chewing noises the Warden uses. Like 'cake, sausage, bacon'. And for further inquiry you could break down, say 'dairy' into subgroups like 'hunk of cheese, yogurt, milk shake'.

That's 2-4 more years of threads like these Image IPB  I wasn't aware that folks wanted Hawke back though.
