Hi, I'm currently making a Cleric and running through the game (with all expansions), I've just reached the Maiden's Glade however I need a bit of guidance on two points:

1.) I am following a basic Cleric guide on the NWN wiki, linked here. The problem is, I am not sure what skills to continue pumping after Level 3 (the step by step levelling guide stops after the Tutorial section). I've saved the skills for two levels, and am now stuck as I must invest in skills to level up (max saved is 10 by the looks of things). Judging by the previous level up points spent, Concentration, Spellcraft, Tumble, Use Magic Device and Bluff/Diplomacy (Bluff in my case) seem to be the way to go. Is this correct? Do I continue to pump these skills only, ad-infinitum until the level cap?

2.) I'm not sure if I can be bothered reading levelling guides for my other characters in my party.. Is using the auto level up a bad idea?

At the moment I don't have any combat skills or spells, I have Full Plate armor and I'm just running around with a spear (as the guide says to specialise in spears). I am doing okay so far, but I seem to be missing enemies a fair bit.

Thanks in advance.

1) That guide is pretty clear, if you want to do follow it, max the skills in the indicated order. Concentration should be the top priority. And the max number of skills you can save is 5. There aren't many "way to go"-skills, for example, that guide lists some useful ones, but it depends on what you want to do. If, for example, you want to act as the party rogue and don't need to rely on a companion for that, you may want to invest on locks/traps skills. You won't have enough points for a "perfect" skill set.

2) I don't know if you'll find any companion leveling guide. The recommended button (the closest to auto-level) isn't usually advisable, but if you have absolutely no idea of what to do, you can use it. You don't need a powerful party for the OC anyway.

Cleric gameplay usually works like this: first, you cast buffing spells on yourself and party members, then fight enemies in melee, healing when necessary (you can cast an offensive spell here and there, but clerics aren't the best class for that). I suggest using a medium weapon and a shield until you get the Stormlord bonuses to spears, and change to spears then. Lower level gameplay may be a bit random at times, so don't worry too much about missing, that should be solved in time.

1) Yes, keep levelling the chosen skills. I'm not too sure about skipping Diplomacy in favour of Bluff. I think the former might get a bit more use then the latter. But it will work either way.

2) It's not advised.. but nothing wrong will happen during your first gameplay if you do it. You should manage just fine. Especially with the main character being a Cleric Storm Lord powerhouse.
You could surely solo this game with such a character.

As for missing, you do have some options to buff up and stop missing, though they will be short-lived at that level. Spells like Bull's Strenght, Bless, Aid, Divine Favour and Recitation will all help you hit your targets. You could even have Divine Strength already, if you took the Strength Domain. And it's THE buff to have. If not, you'll have it soon enough (at level 7, to be precise).

Buffs will unfortunately last a very short time, so learn to use that time well, particularly untill you get the Extend spell feat and start using extended buffs. Even then they won't be very long. Such is the charm of playing a Cleric... and it's only downside really.

I went with Bluff as I'm playing an evil character. I took Time and Plant domains (For Barkskin, as I wasn't sure if I was going to have a Druid in my party or not). I figured it would give me a bit of freedom in this sense, in case for whatever reason I don't have a Druid.

As for the companions, I suppose it is a matter of finding an appropriate guide (I.e. a rogue guide, for instance) and apply the same thing to the companion? I think I might just use the Recommended and concentrate on my character though, it seems to be labour intensive enough just looking after one character. I can't imagine trying to have 3-4 guides at once for 3-4 characters. I'll spend more time reading than actually playing.

Don't worry about any of that.

The OC gently walks you through the story like a babysitter who doesn't want to hurt your feelings, regardless of what race/class/alignment/skills/feats/underwear colour/etc... you choose.

Cheers, I also plan to play through all the extra content with the same character(s). Does that change things at all? Is it still safe to use "recommended" on companions with this in mind?

me?
I'd say so, but i'm not an expert character builder ..

if there's a page I do not want 'recommended' on, it's the Feats page - but as mentioned the OC is so easy just scroll up and down the Feats list a couple of times and choose one that sounds good for that char. This way at least you'll get a chance to find out what the nifty ones do,

or better, if you notice one of the Companions is deficient at something (armor class/ attack/ spell penetration/ etc) try to choose a feat that enhances that ...

yea i play with a favoured soul that uses two 2-handed swords - the penalties are endless but it is a fun build at higher levels - the OC is very forgiving

What do you mean by "all the extra content"?

As mentioned, anything will work. Recommended is way far from perfect, but you won't end with a gimp either (and even then, you would be able to complete the OC). If you do it yourself, just take feats that makes sense (i.e. spellcasting feats with spellcasters, combat feats with warriors) and you'll be fine.

Companions don't accompany you to other content, only the player created main character can be exported to other modules/campaigns.

So if they have anything good at the end of the game be sure to hoist it before exporting the PC
