How does Shale's Armor Value work?

This is something I'm cross pollinating between here and the tech support forum, hoping to get actual mechanics feedback here.  Basically, Im having reproducible issues with the Dexterity Hotfix interfering with the armor descriptions of Shales' armor, and also changing behavior of the equipped armor crystals.

What I need to know from the *gameplay* forum, is if there is anything different about Shale's generated armor value vs normal characters, so I can determine if my game install has become corrupted even after uninstalling the hotix. It would be helpful to hear this from someone who hasn't ever had the Dexterity Hotfix installed.

Specifically: Most characters, outside of special abilities, have a "What you see is what you get" thing with Armor...you have a 10.8 armor piece, you put it on, you get 10.8 armor rating. If you have no armor items on, you have an armor rating of zero.

With Shale though, after starting a new game after installing (then subsequently uninstalling) the Dexterity Hotfix, when first acquiring Shale, with no sustained abilities on (which do seem to affect the number) she has a base armor rating of Zero. However, when a Large Crystal with a 10.8 armor value is inserted in the armor slot, her Armor value reads only 4.

This again contrasts with an older save I had from Shale later in the game. At that Point in the game Shale had an 18 Armor value with a 14.4 armor crystal equipped. Un-equipping the Crystal (in camp with no sustained abilities active) leaves her with a 4 point armor value from no discernible source. (incidentally, with the Dex hotfix installed, there is no listed armor value for the crystal, and unequipping it does nothing to change Shales armor value of 18.

Does Shale develop some sort of natural armor bonus over the game that would account for that 4 points of armor?

Please understand, Im not looking to bug report here...you install hotfixes at your own risk. What Im looking for is a description or reference of Shale's armor behavior, so I can tell if this behavior is normal and different from other characters, so I can in turn tell if my entire installation has become corrupted or not.

Thank you for any feedback!

I ran into this bug as well - the problem here is that it appears that when you first encounter shale, specifically when you first enter the village that holds her,  that is when her stats are generated, most likely so that they match your current level. If you have the dex hotfix installed when this happens the crystal she has slotted in her armor slot will screw up her base AC in some way and it stays messed up even if you uninstall the hotfix. The one time I had this happen I had to go back to a save before I entered the village and restart from there.

Ah, thank you erichough !

But just to clarify then, there is no way to run the Dex Hotfix without it messing up the Behavior of Shales' armor crystals?  Because, like I said, even going back to late game save from another game, having the Hotifix installed affected that game (by removing the listed armor value from the crystal, and giving her some sort of "permanent" armor score.).

So , even if I went back to an earlier save, uninstalled the Hotfix, picked up the character, then reinstaleld it, Im likely to run into funky behavior again at some point?  Not crucial to this playthrough as Im going all rogues + Allistair, but good to know for the future.

I was messing around with the hotfix files. If you erase the 4 entries with shales name on them you see the armor value on the crystals again, The bug with the armor value is still there though. I am not too sure how his damage is calculated, but I believe the hotfix jacks with his atk and damage as well. After messing around with the values in shales columns I have royally screwed all of my save games. Everyones defenese values has jumped up and several of my characters are sitting at -10% fatique when naked, much like shale is if you recruit him with the patch and take out the crystal.

I think this might have happened to me. I was using the dex hotfix and after I got Shale, and even WELL after I got Shale, she was a total paper-weight. Couldn't tank worth a hill of beans.
