Reapers make great villains in ME universe. But the problem is if they are finally beaten in ME3 who or what is going to take their place as this great big villain for the rest of the coming games? Who can match the reapers, or should their menace be temporarily stopped but not ended entirely?
I don't think there is one. I think ME3 ends the franchise.

Cerberus. They already stole the reapers thunder in ME2... Seriously though i don't think the mass effect series needs another antagonist akin to the reapers. The universe is so detailed and interesting you don't need a doomsday plot to make an interesting game out of it.armass wrote...

Well I dont think ME3 ends franchise. I think that ME4 will happen few thousand years after galactic victory against Reapers, when galactic community tried to expand into other galaxy and finds new allies and threat greater than the Reapers. It's possible.
This would be cool as hell, with a whole different protagonist!^
Either that, or ME3 ends franchise, as BW has said all along.

They haven't said that at all. They said ME3 will end Shepards story. "I think Mass Effect has that quality to it. If you get rid of the Reapers and win that, wouldn't it be amazing to just live on the Citadel or just take a ship to Omega? That makes sense." That's a casey Hudson quote, so i'm pretty sure they're thinking about ways to continue the franchise after ME3.Sebbe1337o wrote...

You don't NEED a "big galaxy shaking evil threat" to have a satisfying science fiction setting. I hope that when they drive the Reapers off (or even destroy them) that the Reapers are NOT replaced by something as big or bigger.
My gosh, so much this. I don't understand why people feel the need to have things always be bigger and bigger. The story isn't about the size of the enemy, it's about the journey. ME4 should explore the universe more, and be less about some all-powerful villian. That gets old faaaaaaaaaaaaast.

I think the Aliens are enough of a menace to each other, Utopia is unachievable and understanding is difficult to reach even between to sentients of the same culture.... once the Reapers are gone it'll business as usually and therefore I'll set Humanity up to at least be the greatest species post-Reaper war.
How about Humanity being the evil invading aliens for once? change of pace would be good.
PS. never forget first contact.

Yes - Casey Hudson does apparently. I think Mass Effect could make a great MMO. I just hope they don't squeeze single player style storylines into a co-op environment, add persistent leveling and carrot-on-stick questing and call it a job well done though.Night Wraith wrote...

Before that, though, there is room for more single-player plots. Technological advancements may allow characters to expand across the universe, discovering new galaxies with their own new threats. We're not just dealing with the Milky Way here, folks.
The universe is Mass Effect's playground. If executed properly, many new challenges (maybe not as big as the Reapers, but it really is all about context) can be applied to the franchise.
