*First of - sorry for my english - i'm german, but there is no ME1 Forum there, so i'm trying it here*

Game:                                        ME 1  PC  - Retail Version (EA classics Box) - patched 1.02
Operating System:                   Windows XP SP3
Graphics Card:                         Nvidia 9500 GT with  Driver 280.26
Processor:                                AMD Athlon // X2 250    (Dual Core)

Problem:

My Boyfriend wanted to try the Mass Effect Series - starting with Part 1, but I can't get the game running for him.
Game Launcher is opening well, Game starts up - a small lag taking place after the logo-videos when it's zomming to the planet - everything fine again and displaying "Press Any Key".
Character Creation works well - but as soon as the Character is done (Custom or Standard Char) the loading screen appears for 2 sec - then the loading screen picture either freezes or we are getting a black screen - sound still playing "loading music". Task Manager not possible because it's going back to game right when tabing out - Alt+F4 not working either -> restart PC.

What we already tried:
- Updating anything Driver related (Direct X , PhysX, Flash Player, .Net Framework)
- Deactivate Sound
- Kill all other tasks in the background
- New Installation
- Windowed Mode -> It doesn't display anything anymore

I ran the Configuration Programm in the launcher again - there I noticed that although he has a Dual Core the game thinks he got only one Core - is this normal?  - could this be causing the problem? - What to do?

Note: I'm running the game just fine with the same drivers he does, got a quad-core und Nvidia 9800 GT - Windows XP, too.

Thanks you very much for the help :innocent:

First thing to try is rollong back your video driver. Nvidia is bad when it comes to supporting old games, and the 258.96 drivers are the latest reliable drivers known to work fine with ME1.
I wouldnt worry about how the config utility views the CPU, as it doesn't always recognise the second core on AMD CPUs.
Another thing to try, is once you are either at the main screen, alt-tab out, bring up the task manager, right click on masseffect.exe, select set affinity, and set it to use obly Core 0.

Thanks for the help.
The 258.96 driver did work - at least as far as tested.
Strange it works on my system with the new driver, though.
Maybe a new clean driver install might help - or I'm just lucky and he's not :P
If not he has to work with this solution. Though it might be heavy driver switching with TES: Skyrim coming out soon. ^^

Just one question in advance: What about ME 2 and drivers?

Thanks

ME2 is pretty much the same deal. While it can work with newer drivers, 258.96 is the latest version known to be stable with both versions of ME.
