I like Morrigan, but Merrill doesn't have to be like Morrigan at all, to be likeable. I'd love to see young, cute and innocent done, without it morphing into woefully naive and even ignorant, as a trope attributed to young female characters. I don't like the "innocent=dumb" Gracie Allen schtick, and you almost always see this being tacked on a woman in fiction.
My favorite comic book character when I was a kid was Kitty Pryde, because she was smart and capable, despite being young, and somewhat innocent, but she was raised in a pretty normal family, and was well adjusted, and her personality reflected that. Morrigan had a pretty crappy upbringing, and was kind of jaded and bitter because of it. Merrill is very different, and was raised differently, but I just can't relate to her, because I don't understand how she can be *that* naive, when the rest of her clan doesn't appear to be, and Marethari doesn't appear to have trapped her in a bubble for her first twenty years or so.
Basically, I get why Morrigan is the way she is, or Velanna, even. I don't "get" Merrill, and I would have liked to learn more about her beyond her quest to fix the Eluvian, in order to get to know her better.
Merrill's problem is that she was sheltered even among the Dalish. Consider taking a young Amish adult and toss them into a bustling 'English' city...but not just any young Amish person...one who has also had an extra layer of sheltering within their community....that's pretty much Merrill. As for the rest of her clan, I don't know how they would act in the same situation. They seem okay amongst themselves but then again, they weren't sheltered within the clan like Merrill was. It seems as if Merrill spent the vast majority of her time studying or with Marethari.
I don't think this makes Merrill dumb and I think the rest of her story makes this clear. Merrill eventualy adjusts to life amongst the humans and she's quite a learned scholar in her field.
I admit that I didn't much care for Merrill's character before DA2 came out, with what little we know, b/c she seemed to just be all about the trope you are describing. I found that she's much more than this, though.
I guess I can easily relate to her behavior, being very shy/nerdy growing up and having like, no friends and horrid social skills...so my view is biased, ofc XD

Same. I made my Hawke look about 21 (this was before I realized he was actually 25 [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/angry.png[/smilie]) but yeah Hawke can look pretty young if you choose to make him such.
Randomly off topic, but how do we know for sure Hawke is 25?
I know there's the comment in Legacy about Leandra being pregnant while Malcolm was doing his thing there, and we know they fled Kirkwall 25 years prior to the beginning of the game, but do we know for sure that Legacy takes place immediately after Malcolm/Leandra fled Kirkwall? Or did they flee but then had to return to the Free Marches later?
