Sure, let's make asari less of a race of Mary-Sue space babes in the reboot.

How are asari Mary-sues exactly?

Oh, I wish I had my old list saved...

The asari are the best biotics...

The asari are the best diplomats...

The asari are the longest lived...

The asari are the most populous...

The asari are the most respected...

The asari are the most wise...

The asari are the most peaceful...

The asari are the best commandoes...

The asari were the first in space...

The asari were the first to find the Citadel...

I think I might be forgetting a few.

Reading the topic name, I'd almost hoped for the cliched reboot with inexperienced yet feisty teenagers that happen to resemble previous incarnations...

Mass Effect: The Next Generation
Mass Effect: X-Treme Biotics, Unleashed!

Well, a ghost can always dream. Realistically speaking, perhaps an HD remake with some bits and bobs cleaned up - specifically, some of the combat mechanics from the original 360 version. Also, everybody loves easter eggs, so throw em in. :P

Arkitekt - no one is talking about indoctrinated TIM here. TIM wants power. TIM wants to make mankind more powerful and superior to other Citadel races - and he has no real problem to deal with the devil to achieve that goal.

Saren on the other hand has his agenda. He knows what he does, and he hopes he can "make organics useful" to the Reapers - he does evil things for something he believes it's the "good cause". Tragic hero anyone?
Saren is willing to do whatever is needed to make his plan happen, that also includes deals with Cerberus for tech & intel. Saren isn't stupid and won't tell TIM or anyone of Cerberus why he's doing what he's doing so ... there is no need TIM or Cerberus is indoctrinated in ME1.

Well I did have another idea...

What if Shepard was changed a bit? His/her background? Specifically, what if Shepard wasn't a distinguished soldier? IE: not a legend/hero already? Instead Shepard is a (relatively) green officer?

The mission to Eden Prime is not also an evaluation of Shepard to join the Spectres. That's not even being considered. It's just a normal mission and Shepard is there because he is competent.

He'd be a little younger and a lower rank I suppose.

He gets swept up in events and it is at the end of the Citadel arc that the Council decides to make him a Spectre. The Council though are ambivalent towards Shepard, not caring much if he succeed or fails since either way they'll spin it to make themselves look better.

Udina is very pessimistic, barely giving Shepard the time of day (even more unfriendly than he was in the real game).

Anderson is hopeful and supportive, but preparing for the worst.

So Shepard, with so little support, must prove himself by going above and beyond his station (rank) to get the job done. It is the events of ME1 that will turn Shepard from a green officer into a veteran and galactic hero. Over the course of the rest of the series he'll become more confident, battle hardened, and a greater legend.

I thought it was a neat idea anyway.

More seriously, the only thing is gonna happen is some excited fans upgrade the graphics engine and some of the effects / textures / models to 2017's standards. And it will take another ten years to finish the bugger. Like Black Mesa project.

I don't think this is an actual attempt at a mod, Arkitekt. It is more of a thought experiment. For fun. You know?

It's fun to talk about alternate ways things could have happened in Mass Effect. "what could have been" and such.

That doesn't make them Mary Sues though, they still have flaws...

As for your list, a lot of that comes with the longevity of their species. They are no more Mary Sues than High Elves in fantasy...

Like what?

Actually I can tear them down just fine when I need to, but they are presented as being a bit perfect. They are also the token "sexy race" (even though they aren't that sexy).

Indeed. It's no "mod" and it's no "dream of a teenager". I'm out of my teeny times for 10 years now ... and come with 18 years of computer gaming experience. Or so. Almost grandpa Image IPB

Seriously: if BW is going to reboot the ME franchise, they should expand the story and the decisions a bit. Shouldn't be a problem in 2017. Image IPB

In that case, writing fanfictions and doing fanart is some kind of "waste of time" too. People do it because of fun.

I'm not pulling anything...

Your definition of a mary sue is just wrong, the asari might be portrayed as a bit overpowered but they definately aren't flawless...

The closest we get in the series to anyone being a Mary Sue or Gary Stu is Shepard, who's a human, and even he/she isn't a true one either.

any re-telling of the Mass Effect story will take place on the big screen. Just hope to god the movies are decent.

I'm out of that age. Movies are usually bad these days with some exceptions. Movies after games are almost 99% ****ty ...

I love the idea of a reboot so you can play the ME series with advanced technology and even more story, more decisions, deeper developed characters and such. I know it's most likely (90%) not going to be happen, but just in case it will, I want a bit more than just a graphical overhaul. The story itself needs a revision - and the characters as well. Especially Shepard needs more emotions in ME and ME2.

The mass effect 'trilogy' of games should be pretty much left as is.

Personally I think ME2 & ME3 look and perform so smoothly even on consoles that they will stand the test of time beyond 2017 and as we will still likely be enjoying more Mass Effect games set in the series by then I don't think in 10 years people will be crying out for reboots and remasters beside the original like PS2 remasters this gen for example;

Simply because it's just not the same thing... most PS3 users can't play the original PS2 games anymore and for those that can they look so ungodly in HD they're practically unplayable. However with the Mass Effect series even the original won't look horrible upscaled to e.g. 2160p if we're going by a 2017 timeline and the changes made to ME2 & ME3 will be so subtle that I doubt anyone would notice or care besides the absolute diehard fans.

Repackaging the complete trilogy collection (especially with bonus content and on a single blu-ray disc) in a single package on every major platform is the only way I can really see Mass Effect remasters happening. If we do get a trilogy collection it will only happen imo if EA have the rights to publish the original Mass Effect on Sony (and presumably Nintendo) consoles, etc.

Perhaps the only way EA might be able to circumvent M$ would be to overhall ME1 with gameplay/inventory enhancements from ME2-3 with better texture details which would make it technically a remaster not a remake but they would call it a new game by giving it a fancy new moniker e.g. Mass Effect: Reloaded and include it in the set with ME2 & ME3 and hope M$ don't poke around too much and ask too many questions.
