This is the steam version, so it should be patched completely (the steam forums are down so I'm trying here). Every time I run the exe (through steam and directly from the directory), the cursor goes into working mode and then a few seconds later stops and nothing happens. There's no splash screen, no configuration screen, no launch. It's completely unresponsive. I've checked my firewall; it doesn't work if the firewall is off either. Running it in administrator mode doesn't work, and neither does running it in any of the compatibilities. Same goes for running steam in compatability mode or as an administrator. All my drivers are up to date.
Does anyone have any ideas? I'm stumped.

Okay, I feel dumb right now. I downloaded the 1.02 patch and ran it, and, surprisingly enough, it seems to be working fine now.
In the off chance that someone with a new computer and steam stumbles across this:
If your copy of Mass effect (1) is not running with steam or windows 7 64 bit
Download the 1.02 patch (not bring down the sky): http://masseffect.bi...ates/index.html
Install it
Try again, and it'll probably be fine.

You and many others could save lots of time by looking up the answer on here instead of posting the question. It's been solved and answered several times. Steam for whatever reason doesn't install the patch properly when it comes to Mass Effect.

You incorrectly assume I didn't spend two hours searching for the question or answer before posting. Fair enough, but you should consider being less hostile in future.

Two hours wasted somehow.

I've been having the same problem as Loci. I've downloaded the Steam version of ME1 with patch 1.02, set the game to run as administrator and i still get a black screen after the splash appears.

Steam has a bad track record when it comes to correctly installing the 1.02 patch, as well as DX9.0c.
Manually download and install them, and see how you go.

Still no luck. I got the black screen and the cursor says it's in working mode. When i CTRL+ALT+DEL, it says that it's not responding pretty much immediately.

About the only other thing I can suggest is once you start the game, alt-tab out, and set your processor affinity to single core.
There is ap rogram available on the interwebz called MassAffinity which will do this automatically, instead of you doing it manually each time you start the game. It was, however, designed for ME2, but you might be able to tinker with it to work with ME1.

You can also try checking your game cache and force steam to audit your files. I have ME1 running off of steam with no problems on a six core proccesor.

You said you are running as Admin..but have you set the compatibility to XP service pack 3??

Ok, I tried just one last thing before deleting the game forever. I deleted the file "OpenAL32.dll" or something like that. Now for some reason the game works just fine. Thank you for your suggestions though, guys!
