I've run into a problem with playing Mass Effect 2. When I load it up, it starts fine and gets to the "Press Start to Continue" pre-menu screen. Once I press that, however, the screen blacks out and stays that way. It was working up until around the time of the last Xbox 360 dashboard update (10/11/11) though I don't know for sure that it was then and not before/after as there was a period of a couple weeks where I didn't try to play.

Since this problem started I've tried both of my ME2 discs (collector's edition). Initially they were installed to the hard drive, I removed them and tried both again with no luck. I tried borrowing my roommate's (non-CE) copy, no luck. I tried deleting my DLC after reading about problems with that, no luck. I tried clearing my Xbox 360 cache, no luck. I tried playing offline, no luck.

I tried signing in to another gamer profile, luck. It loads up right up on a different gamertag, but that gamertag doesn't have my numerous completions of both ME1 and ME2 to play around on, nor the rights to all of the DLC that I've bought.

Is this a problem anyone else has had? Is there any fix for it? I would like to be able to finish all of the DLC on at least one of my four characters before ME3 comes out.

Technically any other Gamertag on the same console should be able to access the dlcs bought on another Gamertag; otherwise every user would have to purchase the same dlc if they wanted to play them on the same console (financial suicide for Microsoft). But that's besides the point.

I would imagine that there's a problem with your Gamertag. If your achievements are up to date I would suggest recovering your Gamertag to see if that helps; it's also the only thing you haven't tried and you've tried everything else as far as I can tell.

It could also be 'one of those things' when it comes to freezing, which is usually random but no less annoying.

I tried recovering last night after I posted, no luck with it either.

I'd even be fine if it was just something that happened sometimes and made me try again to play, but it's happening every single time. :(

Half tempted to think it's an HD issue, but the ability to play the game on another Gamertag counteracts that thought.

I might be reading your initial post wrong, but did it freeze when you tried to play off the disc as well?

Also wondering if you could perhaps install another game having 'uninstalled' ME2, and then install ME2 again to see if it uses another part of the HD.

To be honest I'm out of suggestions, pretty much because you yourself have been very thorough in trying to resolve the problem, and I'm just throwing out ideas at random. Perhaps others might have some other insight I'm lacking.

Well, I figured it out. I tried playing without my flash drive in that contained all my saved games, but still logged in to my main gamertag. It loaded up no problem. From there it was just a matter of figuring out which saved game it was. Unsurprisingly, it was the last character I'd played. It sucks to have lost that progress, but it's better than losing all four of my characters at least.

There was a weird thing when it loaded the menu that it didn't switch from the "Press START" background to the Cerberus Network one, so the menu looked weird but it was at least functional.

Sounds like a corrupted save then. At least you found out what seemed to be causing the problem. Not the best of news but a resolution of sorts.
