So was it just a personal favour for Marethari or did the favour involve the whole clan? It still seems to me that the whole clan got dragged across the sea to Sundermount when they would have been better off in Ferelden. I dare say it was the long sea voyage that killed the Halla. If it was a personal favour, Marethari should have made the journey alone or with a few companion guards.

Once there, of course it is because Marethari is convinced she needs to stay to protect Merrill from the demon. Fanerel is right at the end, she cared more about Merrill than the clan and her duty was to them, besides which I am sure if she had told Merrill the real reason why she stayed and what she intended to do, Merrill would have listened or at least discussed the matter with her. The main thing is that once the amulet was delivered there was no need for them to stay and the clan could have left with Merrill. If they had travelled all the way from Ferelden with the mirror (presumably uncleansed) and no one else became tainted, then it is safe to assume they could have travelled anywhere in reasonable safety. How a demon entrapped for nearly two millenia on the top of a mountain could leave via the mirror is very strange, particularly if they put sufficient distance between themselves and the demon that it could no longer contact them so it was not longer having an effect on how the mirror was repaired (I doubt its influence could be too far beyond the area of Sundermount) but this has already been discussed in full on another thread.

You guys are overthinking this. Look, Pol dropped his contact lens around 9:32 Dragon, they've been looking for it ever since. After Pol died it was too late, they'd already become addicted to the mary jane that grows around the mountain, which explains why Marethari kept warning people that Merrill was going to transform into a basalisk and eat their children if they stared at her too long. It's also why Pol thought he was running into a cotton candy store instead of the varterral's lair.

Hey, that sounds like that time I took Acid. But with more demon-polar bears, and less cotton candy

Merrill states the Halla used to pull their landships ran off, and they were waiting for another Dalish clan to give them some.

Well...technically she just says they lost their halla. She never says what actually happened to them. If they ran off or got killed in some way.

Merethari stayed because she was more under the demon's influence than Merrill was.

...*breaks the fourth wall to look at everyone outside their computer monitors.* Supposition your honor? *repairs the fourth wall*

I like to think that way, but there is no actual in-game evidence for or against.

In fiction, that there is no evidence for, is often evidence against. Unless the piece is purposely build to create questions to the whole situation.
Since there is no evidence to prove Marethari was at all udner influence of a demon, and that the question if she were is not even raised, it is safe to say that she wasn't.

As well as Hella the Dalish seemed to have lost their children. Maybe that's what makes Marethari all weird.

IIRC there were a few in the Dalish Origin and unlike hella, cats, dwarven women etc a model for elven children, girls at least, did exist in DA2.

Certainly appeared that way to me.

She claimed to know what its plan was.  Either she had been speaking with it and let it convince her that its plan was to escape through the mirror, or she was even more of an arrogant old bat than it seems, and just presumed to know what the demon was going to do.
