she is important in the Novels of ME!!

I.E. she's not important. at all. they need to seperate the novels from the games as much as they can.

Gigi might be a "backup," if you import an ME2 save where Jack died during SM, then Gigi might be filling in for her, assuming she doesn't die in Deception.

The novels (and comics) focus on the aspects of the MEU that we don't see much of in the games (any movie SHOULD also do this, but that's another topic), so it stands to reason that characters with a small role in one might have large roles in the other.
