 Hello, I have just bought and installed ME2 off steam and I'm having major FPS issues. It's extremely choppy and unplayable. My computer seems to pass the recommended specs just fine.

Hi all, I just purchased ME2 off steam and I'm having some serious FPS issues. The game is extremely choppy and I have no idea why. My computer seems to pass the reccommended specs, and I have my graphic drivers up to date.

Physical Memory: 2.00 GB
Display Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
VRAM: 512 mb
Driver Version: 5.10.0.5519

Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP home edition
Direct X Version: DirectX 9.0c (mar2009) or later


1. What is the nature of the problem you are seeing?      Serious FPS issues, extremely choppy during start screen and actual game.
2. When did the problem start occurring?      The problem started occuring soon as I started the game. The initial start up cinematics worked fine, once I got to the 'start new game' etc screen with the laptop, it became super choppy.
3. Where does your problem occur?      Everywhere. I lowered the graphics to best of my ability and nothing changed.
4. What are the steps in replicating the problem?      I was just trying to start the game when I noticed my FPS was extremely low, once I started a  new game I realized it was definetly a problem haha
5. Have you modified your game in any way?      No, I have no modified my game in anyway, I'm playing the exact same game that steam offers. I also tried reinstalling the game, thought maybe there was an issue when I downloaded. Still didn't work.

What is the Nvidia driver version, as given by nvidia themselves? it should be a 3 didgit number, with 2 digits after a decimal point.
eg: XXX.xx
The latest drivers that are known to work with ME2, are 258.96. Anything newer than that, or older than 197.xx, will definately give you problems.

My current installed Driver is 285.58.

So what you're saying is I might have to download an older version of the drivers to make this game work?

nVIDIA is ignoring their user base to a relatively unhappy extent. You have a five year old video graphics card, and their drivers are mostly tuned to the cards from the past three years, and to the games of the current year.

Their future corporate existence is in doubt. Intel denied them the information to allow them to keep on selling chipsets for Intel's processors, AMD would let them keep on doing that for AMD's processors, but makes those chipsets itself so much better now, that it doesn't amount to a real competition any more.

Both AMD and Intel are selling unified CPUs with the graphics intermingled within the cores, which nVIDIA cannot do, so the Low End of X86 computing is effectively out of reach, and AMD is on the verge of taking the middle away next. It's those two that represent the graphics profit area, not the High End.

So at a level below X86, they have begun trying to out-Apple the iPhone with their own Tegra 3 SOC for Smartphones, and at the pinnacle of performance, going still larger, hotter-running, and more complicated, to sell their GPUs as scientific CPUs.  They just aren't paying enough attention to cards like the olf 8800s these days.

Don't expect their drivers to work as they did in days of old.

Yes.
Download these drivers from Nvidia's website, uninstall yuor current drivers, and then install the ones I linked to.
