So, Fenris in the Prose Edda is the giant attack monster wolf of Norse legend. This may have been asked before but I couldn't slog through Fenris' fan thread and didn't see this asked in other threads.
If Orleians are French, Fereldans are English are the Tevinter folks based off or Norwegian culture? At one point Fenris says his master called him 'His little wolf'.
Or is more like Morrigan's name being lifted from Celtic mythology where the name 'Fenris' was chosen because of what characteristics he has? Any one know?
The name Fenris

No, and the same culture as the Norwegians had was spread all over Scandinavia and northern Germany.
They're more akin to the Byzantine Empire if anything.

Yeah there are some particular Scandinavian stories that are some of my faves actually! Such weird tales!
Since we've never been to Tevinter, where have you read they are more Byzantine?
What particularly tweaked my interest is that the difference between Morrigan's name and Fenris is that we are told what Fenris' name means and it points directly out of the DA-verse and into actual real deal mythology. Where as Morrigan shape shifts and is a witch, which shares simularities with the Celtic Morrigan but no actual dialog points out anywhere other than the DA-verse. ThHer name seems more referential as apposed to literal in that sense.

Oh, I see David Gaider said Tevinter is simular to later Roman Empire stuff. Well, there you go. Although, here's a thought, the later period of the Roman/ Byzantine Empire used Germanic tribes in their armies. It could be possible that the Fenris connection and the culture that has Norwegian influences either borders Tevinter or was associated with the empire. Meaning that that is how Darius chose the name. It's a total stretch and not based on a single thing though.

Fen already meant wolf in elven, so that's most likely what they'd allude to in the name, and the whole being chained thing.
I doubt that there'll be Germanic-y tribes in Tevinter. The Anderfels would be your best bet for that considering their naming, but that would likely be unrelated to Fenris name.

We had this discussion once, also in relation to the Shawl of Dalesdottir quest. It's supposed to be an old Tevinter family crest, but that is obviously a Norse name. Some in the forum argued it could be similar to the Varangian guard working for the Byzantines. I'm guessing the writers take inspiration where they like and don't hold to close parallels.

Yeah I figured it was a long shot, it was just some what jarring to hear the definition of his name be so real worldy! I want to see more cultures next time around. Norse stuff is one of my favorites, so it was mostly wishful thinking I guess!

The Tevinter Imperium is a lot like Imperial Rome in a lot of ways.
The oddest part is that they don't have any distinguishable accent.
The Fereldans have British accents, the Orlesians have French accents, the Antivans have spanish accents, the Nevarrans appear to have Russian accents, the Dalish have Welsh accents, and the Dwarves have American accents.

Being norwegian, I can tell you right away: when Hollywood or videogame producers tries to make anything viking`ish, they allways fail miserably. Even the names they use tend to be downright wrong (not in Fenris case).
