...so how often are ppl pausing to change tactics for all party member?  I find my main character dies a lot while the party members seem to manage somehow.  I guess I'm just not accustomed to wanting ot stop every few seconds to change everything around, and with such a slew of options it kind of boggles my mind.

Are there any tips out there to the best way to get accustomed to this type of playstyle?

Well, I suggest you stop thinking in terms of the "main character". All four are equally important, and in harder fights you will have to directly mange actions for all of them. This might mean taking control of say, Morrigan, to line up a good Cone of Cold, or Dog to get him in a good spot for a Dread Howl. If you've got someone going after a mage, it may be wise to directly control them to take advantage of cover.

The tactics menu is there for default behavior, what they do if you're not controlling them. Don't rely on it to direct all their actions. You can leave them to their own devices in easier fights, ut for many you'll have to tell them specifically what to do, or take direct control for a more complex plan of action.

well then i suggest you start with the easy difficulty, it still offers some challenge while you don't have to pause every few secs.

about the tactics. try making them as simple as they can be. for example:

allistair > enemy > nearest visible > attack

allistair > self > health <25% > use least powerful health potion

work your way up at your rate of comforting with the gameplay

about your main, try not to get aggro to fast (agression towards your main). and let the party attack on the front.

hope this makes sense for ya, as my english isn't the best ^^

Personally, I turn tactics completely off and micromanage all the characters every 1-2 seconds or so. Total control - but playing is slow this way.

Patience.

At first your character will be more vunerable until he/she advances more. If taking on an adversarial party greater than your own party try to constrict the battle, use doorways or choke points to give you a one on one battle. I, too, have had a hard time addapting to this game because I have been playing single player/character without party members and the tactics change. Also look at the damage bars above the enemies and don't keep switching targets until you have one down otherwise you will surely lose. Now I am really no expert in this game but those tips have helped me. I imagine there are other players that can give you much better tips.

I also play this way.  Tactics are great but I prefer complete control.

I've also given up on the auto tactics and turned them off. It's the only way I can win certain battles.

Tactics are awesome. At the least, even if you micromanage, put in a

Self: Health less than 50% = Use Pot

That way, if you accidentally missed them getting pounded, they'll heal themselves.
