As the topic mentions, in a fanfic I'm betaing, one of my friends wonders what happens exactly to a bann/arling/teryn if the current holder is killed?

My understanding is that it would go to said holder's heir but if no son/daughter is alive, it goes to the closest family member. For example if Loghain's daughter couldn't accept the Teryn of Gwaren for some reason (locked up/Queen) then it would revert to Voric's family and thus Alistair being Voric's closest descendant/heir?

Is this correct?

I don't imagine the teyrn could be given to anyone else while Anora is alive. Locked up, she is still the Teyrna unless the ruler/Landsmeet strips it from her. As Queen, it would likely follow that she would be unable to be Teyrna, most likely she would offer Gwaren as a political reward to someone else. I honestly don't see any way Alistair could inherit, unless Anora saw fit to give it to him.

Maric made Loghain Teryn of Gwaren.

Thus, precedent dictates King Alistair or Queen Anora could assign the Teryn to whomever they believe deserves it.

This is what happens if you ask for land and titles to go with it.

Anything could happen because it's a game - but the King assigning the new Teryn seems the "new" thing to do.

According to lore, prior to Maric's bold move, Bann's elected Arls, Banns and Arls elected Teryns, and King Calenhad took the throne by force and oaths of fealty. So perhaps the Bann's and Arls of the surrounding lands pick the new Teryn.

But again . . . write your own story IMO.
