Considering Sebastian points out to her that they shouldn't be debating the Rite of Anulment when the real culprit is sitting right there and Meredith totally ignores him as well, I think it's fairly obvious that it makes little difference to Meredith what you do to Anders. He's given her what she wanted.

What I would have like to have seen was a showdown between Meredith and transformed Anders, glowing eyes and everything but then that would have meant revealing too soon about the sword and have made Hawke totally superfluous. As it was Justice took a total back seat throughout the Last Straw which was a pity as there were time when the raging spirit thing would have really come in handy while defending the mages.

So much this, I would so have loved that the final showdown would have been between Anders and Meredith. Mage possessed with a spirit of justice vs. templar possessed by ancient lyrium sword. And Hawke tipping the balance like Shepard between Samara and Morinth.

Ah well but I guess the zombie blob and walking statues are more awesome ...

I tend to think of it as Meredith both picking her battles and sowing dissent. She knows her templars aren't the equal to Hawke's companions, so if they opt to defend him she's on her own. Add in Orsino (and other mages with him, can't remember) and it's not a sure win for her.
But more than that, I think Meredith is smart enough not to make Anders a martyr. Execution is what he expects, even wants, and if she goes through with that he becomes a powerful symbol for mages to rally against. If she forces Hawke to do it, or even if Sebastian manages it, that robs him of some of that martyrdom (especially if Hawke is a mage) and would have a negative effect on the morale of all the companions, (except Seb -_-) which is beneficial for her in the coming battle.

But I also buy into her just being completely obsessed with Annulment due to the idol/sword screwing with her mind.

Justice!Anders vs Meredith has been something I have wanted to draw for a while now... what an amazing fight that would be...

I would have loved to have seen a split-second decision tree much like The Witcher 2. Perhaps Meredith walking up to Anders, sword out, ready to execute him then and there... and Hawke having but a few seconds to select "Defend Anders" and do an epic weapon block a-la Cullen's "You'll have to go through me!" or just do nothing and watch her kill him.
Then if you blocked, Meredith scowling and walking off to organise her army, leaving Hawke to decide whether to let Anders live or execute him personally.

Actually, I would really love to see some quick-decision options in general. A lot of people complained about lack of player agency in cutscenes, so this would give players the chance to react to something if they wanted to.

YES, totally agree with this idea. If Dragon Age had copied anything from the Mass Effect franchise, I wish it had been a system like the paragon/renegade interrupts.

Plus Justice/Anders battle v. Meredith would've been spectacular. Red lyrium-addled Meredith verses the blue fiery Justice of Anders, even with that aesthetic aside it would've been epic.

Anders is content to die after bombing the chantry, but Justice doesn't take over to prevent the RoA?

Yes, a Justice vs Meredith showdown would have been interesting.

Same here, the only interrupting scene you get is from asking a mage companion( or yourself as a mage) is to stop the hold of the blood mage while you look for the templar recruit Keran (I think).

I think many of us would like to have more of those scenes (Cough Cough Dragon age 3 Cough Cough)

and Justice/Anders win, because Justice is that epic :P And not to mention by the end of the game Meredith is as easy as can be... you can basically eat pie while fighting her. + you get a lot of additional allies so she doesn't really know who she should attack. I prefered the Orsino battle...

It was just another unnecessary "The player has to make all the decisions in the world for everyone in it." because that's Bioware's gimmick. Yeah, you could conjure up explanations, but the real reason was because that's just how these games always work out, whether it's a good idea or not.
