Note: All of this is subject to change, Bioware have said they're still tweaking the settings.

It's taken a while but I've finally dug up (well, excavated) some more information about automatic replies in conversation.

This is handled through an options menu setting "Conversation Mode", like so:

or if that doesn't work (copy and paste this link into a browser): http://i.imgur.com/IcVoOl.jpg

The three modes that the player picks from when starting a new game (RPG, Story and Action) set one of these options initially, but it can be changed at any time through the options menu.

There seem to be three settings available for how conversations are handled in Mass Effect 3.

Full Decisions: 'You are required to respond to all conversations; No choices are made for you.'
This is the defaut option for RPG and Story, it seems. The only difference between RPG and Story modes is the starting difficulty (though both can obviously be changed later).

This is the system from ME/ME2.

Major Decisions: 'Most conversations are played out using default conversation responses but you are given conversation reply options to make major game decisions.'
Judging from the demo, this is the default option for Action mode. Cinematics progressed fluidly but the dialogue wheel still popped up in scenes that required a decision that would affect anything (I'd guess Paragon and Renegade decisions, story choices, romances, etc). In the demo scene I watched, the player in Action mode was able to ask Kirrahe about Virmire, similar to people playing on RPG or Story.

Since there were no actual "choices" in any of the demo footage (all of the conversation branches were cosmetic and seemed to have no lasting effects on the story), it's difficult to tell what the game considers a 'major' decision.

Movie Mode: 'All conversations are played out using default responses and you will not be able to choose your own reply.'
This isn't a default mode, it has to be switched on by the player after they start the game (it looks like). Automates all conversations and all decisions, and plays out cutscenes like a movie. I guess if you just wanted to sit back and watch Shepard do their thing?

Again, all of this is subject to change - but it's interesting nonetheless. I'll be playing 'Full Decisions'.

Thanks for the breakdown, though I never planned on anything less than full decisions

I think movie mode would be interesting if we could set "full paragon" or "full renegade". I tend to make Shepards like that.

One wonders why you even played any of the ME games then.

Hmmm. It would be interesting to hear what the default decisions are like in Movie Mode: paragon or renegade.

Watch, this question will spawn many comments such as "see, Paragon pansies are canon. GOD, why does Bioware even give us choices."<_<

Is anyone planning to use movie mode? I'd be interested in hearing why.

Personally, I would rather have the option for a time limit on dialogue options, like in Alpha Protocol. That would let it flow naturally like movie dialogue yet at the same time give player choice.

Yeah I'd really only be interested in movie mode if it played the game for me as well.

So, we do have a canon Shepard after all...

I don't get this comment.  All we know is they are adding an option for people to have a more cinematic version of the game and for all we know they will pick the middle option all the time which would be the exact same thing as just pounding the 'x' button to skip all the dialogue.

To answer the above question, I might use 'Action Mode' after a few playthroughs and I know the story by heart and want to have an unintrupted experience with the conversations.

Whatever they pick, it's the default, and we are talking about default decisions here which you might as well call canon. Kinda unnerving to see a default option in a game that is supposed to be so much about choices...

I would like to see the option to have you import your ME3 save into a new ME3 game. There you can choose to have your choices you made from the last game be auto chose. That way when I replay my canon, (who I already know all the choices for) I  can just watch his story.

We now have more information.

I didn't have access to other files before, and we didn't actually know what the conversation mode settings were or how they worked.

Now we do. (I could've edited the old thread, but at 50+ pages of mostly circular discussion I thought a new thread was best).

How do you not get it? You do realize that there has to be canon right? How else will they ensure continuity into other ME titles? Do you think that sequels to the trilogy will all take place before Shepard? There is a canon storyline. I dont know why people are in denial about this.

Oh goddamn you're back on this. They have to have a default Shepard to bring forward if they want to do more with the series, that's going to happen. That doesn't mean it's 'my' canon - I don't consider any Shepards that I didn't play canon.

Wonder if there will be additional cinematics in Action mode that aren't there in RPG mode?.

As a huge advocate for allowing gamers to customize their experience as much as possible in all games I'm cautiously optomistic about this decision.

I'm hoping the modes are actually distinct enough to provide different experiences each with their own merits. Additional cut scenes and cinematics in a second playthru could be a nice touch after a heavy full RPG playthru. Here's to hoping this is all implemented well.

Does anyone know if alignment will be back? If out 'choices' dont matter then y have alignments? Or will alignment choice be determined in the mode options?
