You're in a for such a treat!

Even today, the BG series is rewarding, and if you're considering it, you might peek at Is it worth playing after so long?.

You can get the game on CD or download it through Steam or my personal preference, GoG.

Because BG is old in gaming terms, it's easy to get confused about current mods and tweakpacks. I'm reposting this from the old Bioware forums to gather the useful links; some will surely need updating, so please post as you see fit.

The setup below refers to using 'EasyTutu,' a method for playing BG1 with the improved BG2 engine. Just install both games and EasyTutu as described below. Some players favor using the BGT method instead; see Sarielle's post in the first link, above, for a good explanation, and The Cow King's install guide, on the same page.

In the week of this posting, the Gibberling's site has been up and down several times. If you find links to G3 mods do not work, try either the G3 Emergency Mirror or the Wayback Machine. See Gibberlings down? for discussion.

Installs
In this order:
Many other mods offer alternative story lines or challenging variations for veteran players. For your first time, I recommend just the basic steps above to make the game more stable and enjoyable.
If playing only BG2, skip the BG1 and EasyTutu installs.

There is little content alteration here, with a focus on improved gameplay.

Tweakpack
While not strictly necessary, the G3 BG1 Tweaks offers wonderful options for improved gameplay.

These are the ones I include. Most veterans will laugh at how I opt for all the 'make my life easier' tweaks, and you may have stricter preferences. I've put an * by the ones I recommend for any new player.

* More Interjections
* Add Bags of Holding
(Exotic Items Pack, if playing a BG1 chr using katanas)
* Add Map Notes
* Stores Sell Larger Stacks
Wear Multiple Protection Items, PnP style
* Higher HP on Level Up
* Maximum HP, Joinable NPCs
Identify All Items (I wouldn't include this for a new player, but it's your choice)
* Easy Spell Learning
* Shut Up "You Must Gather Your Party ..." (Include this and thank me later)
* Unlimited Stacks
* Prevent random crashes in Beregost
Happy Patch
no helmet animation (personal preference)
No Traps or Locks (again, for a new player, I wouldn't usually include this, but if traps irritate you, by all means, add it in)
Adjust Evil Joinable NPC Reactions
ToB Style NPCs
Change Jaheira to N. Good
Consistent Stats: Edwin, Jaheira, Minsc, Viconia (I use the BG2 settings. May want to skip this if using the Level 1 NPC mod)
Allow player to choose NPC proficiencies and skills
NPCs go to inns

for BG2, consider
* Bonus Merchants
Female Edwina
* Romance Bug Fixes
* Imoen ToB Dialogue Fix
Un-Nerfed THAC0 Table
Un-Nerfed Sorceror Spell Progression Table (if playing a Sorc)
Alter Mage, Cleric, and Druid Progression Tables (to un-nerfed)
Invisible Cloak of Mirroring
No Drow Avatars on Party in Underdark (personal preference)

If you want to see everything in the game, take the Multiple Strongholds. If you want a streamlined experience, skip it, as I do. Though they offer some amusing scenes, they require periodic attention, save for the Cleric Stronghold. Clerics seem content to have your help whenever you choose to bring it. Or not.

Don't know what these are? Don't worry! Many can be changed even in the middle of a game, and you can finish them game with any of them.

I cannot recommend highly enough that you choose the tweak to "Shut Up 'You Must Gather Your Party ...'"

Technical Challenges for a Modern Computer
Yes, it is possible to play with Windows 7. Many problems are graphics card-related, and you can find solutions in the BG1 Technical Forum (the NWN forum has some good Nvidia advice, too) and elsewhere on the Internet. This thread at Spellhold Studios summarizes some good workarounds, especially to switch on Software Transparent BLT and use 16-bit color depth.

Here is an explanation on how to turn off graphics acceleration in Windows Vista/7.

I play on a Mac running Windows through Parallels, and I run the game without 3D acceleration. It works fine.

Character Creation
Play whatever you like best. Don't worry: you can win the game.

Don't worry about your stats! Many veterans here just take their first roll.

If you're an obsessive re-roller like me, you might want to use 85 as a good mark (it usually takes me an hour to beat that, and I always wish instead that I'd saved an hour by accepting the 83 I got on the second roll).

It becomes exponentially less likely any roll will improve beyond 85, but trust me: in the 80's is plenty good enough, anything above 85 is wonderful. You have less than a 1 in 1000 chance of hitting 90 and 1 in 10000 of hitting 93. Sure, some players have done it, but in that time, you could have saved half the Sword Coast and bought a few rounds at the Jovial Juggler. Don't worry about rolls, and move on to playing!

Do keep balanced stats. For first-time players, you may want to keep all your stats above 8. Leave playing with an incredibly ugly or dimwit character for your next run.

Know that race can affect your Romance options in BG2. No Drow will date an elf, and there's no love for half-orcs. If you want specifics, see Extremist's Romance Guide.

About weapon Proficiencies: if you chose via the Tweakpack to allow BG2-style Proficiencies, be aware that there are fewer good 'exotic' weapons (like Wakizashis) than traditional ones, like Axes and Hammers. Three exceptions: there is a nice katana in BG2, there aren't many good Bastard Swords, and the longsword that most veterans like doesn't appear until late in Throne of Bhaal.

Shadowkeeper
You'll see veterans refer to Shadowkeeper for editing game files (or 'Gatekeeper' if you are playing without EasyTutu), but be careful: it can be hard to resist the temptation to edit out all the challenge of the game.

There isn't much that makes it necessary in BG1 (I use it only for portrait changes), so I recommend skipping it, but if you do want the program,  choose your limits before using it about whether you'll strengthen your character and if so, how far.

Portraits
You can keep the ones in the game or use your own. I like the BG2 art, so I change only a couple. I use an Imoen portrait from NWN and a BG1-influenced portrait for Jaheira, That's also the site from which I get my PC portrait.
Here you can find others in BG1 style and a modified one for Viconia, plus more on the G3 site, if it is up.

Walkthroughs
I highly recommend playing the first time without a Walkthrough guide.

If you have one, it's hard to resist following the directions someone else has given, and there are so many wonderful surprises in the game, you should treat yourself for your first time. Use a Walkthrough when you replay.

That said, by far the most common Walkthrough is Dan Simpson's, which you can find many places, including Sorcerer's Place. I prefer Dave Milward's (same link) amusing and opinionated guide. He explains his reasoning so you can make your own decisions.

You do NOT need a Walkthrough to complete the game. Really! Just play as you see best, and if you get stuck, post here on the Forums.

If I could wish just two things for every new player, it would be to let them experience the surprises of the original story, and to install the Tweak to "Shut Up 'You Must Gather Your Party ...'"

NPC's
You have room for five companions at a time, and you can swap between them. They'll wait for you.

If your party is very good or very evil (Reputation above 18 or terribly low), some NPC's may decide to leave you. You can prevent this with the Happy Party tweak, or by keeping your Reputation from getting too low or too high.

I always have a full party, as the NPC banter is my favorite part of the game, but some people like to customize their party or even play solo. Save that for veterans. If this is your first time through, try out the different NPC's to get the ones you enjoy most.

Don't worry! Your character, your current items, and your party are enough to finish the game. You don't need a spoiling Walkthrough! All you need is your wits, this Forum, and the tweak to "Shut Up 'You Must Gather Your Party ...'"

Basic Tips
  • It helps with NPC interaction to have a character with high charisma in your Leader (first) slot, but it isn't essential.
  • Stick to the road as you travel until you get stronger. If the first couple of levels are hard, hang in there! It gets easier.
  • If you're really taking a beating while on the road in your first levels, get to the Friendly Arms Inn or Nashkel for more companions.
  • A well-rounded party includes a tank, a healer, a caster, and a thief.
  • Rest in safe places at early levels, so you aren't ambushed.
  • The general quest suggestions made by your companions will nudge you in useful directions.

Battle Strategies
  • It's a huge help to have a scout, either a hidden thief/ranger, or an invisible character.
  • Ranged attacks are quite strong in BG1.
  • If your enemy group includes a spellcaster, kill him first.
  • Limit your enemies by holding some, or stunning them, or sleeping them, etc.
  • If a fight is hard, a potion or scroll can make a big difference.
  • There are a few fights that can be very difficult at low levels (one example is right outside the Nashkel mines). There's nothing wrong with skipping them until you've gained a few levels.
  • The Spoiler Forum is a great place to ask for help with a specific fight.

Items
  • There's no one thing you need to complete the game.
  • Items last forever in chests, barrels, and vendor inventory.
  • Use the TAB key to reveal selectable items (if using EasyTutu)
  • If you think you're done with a quest item, you probably are. Don't worry about ditching things. You can always sell to a vendor and re-buy if needed.
  • If you can't stop worrying, put all your Most-Likely-Junk but-I-Can't-Get-Rid-of-It items in a chest, and then stop worrying.
  • Beregost is a good central place for storage. I use Kagain's shop and the Jovial Juggler, which has the same layout as the Helm and Cloak in BG city.
  • Items get cheaper as your Reputation improves.

Other Useful Sites
There are tons, but here are a few gems:

Those may be of interest, but you don't need them. You don't need an uber-rolled character. You don't need a Walkthrough telling you what to do.

Don't worry! You'll save the Sword Coast with just your heart, humor, and the occasional hamster.

Now go gather your party and venture forth!

PLAYING BG2

The install guide above works fine. Many additional BG2 mods aim at veteran players (including the 'challenge' upgrades of Tactics or Sword Coast Strategems II for BG2, and Ascension for ToB), or are 'story changing mods'. 'Challenge' mods should install after the Fixpack and before the Tweakpack.

A returning veteran who wants to skip the dull starting dungeon can use the Dungeon-Be-Gone mod. If you're old enough to remember the Immortal Imoen trick (which I used to use so she could clear rooms while I ate lunch), be aware that it is unfortunately blocked by the otherwise excellent Fixpack.

Importing
If you finished BG1, it's usually a hassle-free transition to load from your Final Save in BG2.

If you have trouble with certain Tutu settings, you can fix these with Shadowkeeper, or just do what I do: create a new character with the same name.

Do be wary of overusing Shadowkeeper, which can tempt changes that sap the fun from the game. I recommend choosing your limits early on about whether you'll strengthen your character and if so, how far.

Personally, I use it only in the first two minutes for these changes:
  • Use a new portrait for my PC, Jaheira, and Imoen.
  • Correct hair color for Minsc, so he looks bald instead of old. Redder hair for Jaheira, to match portrait.
  • Add three potions of Master Thievery so I can get Ribald's ring without reloading. This is blatant cheating. Flame me.
Seriously, I just hate reloading to get a particular result, and this saves me time. For a no-reload challenge, I wait until I legitimately get those three potions.
  • Edit experience up to the correct 161K if having trouble with an import from BG1. (You can also fix misplaced proficiencies, but I found it easier to just make a new character.)
  • Add the golden pantaloons, if I want them and had import trouble. If you don't know what this is, don't worry.
Once Viconia joins me, I change her portrait, and if necessary, I correct the bug in Jaheira's romance. See Romances below.

Walkthroughs
Again, I recommend playing the first time without a Walkthrough guide.

If you have one, it's hard to resist following the directions someone else has given, and there are so many wonderful surprises in the game, you should treat yourself for your first time. Use a Walkthrough when you replay.

That said, again the most common Walkthrough is Dan Simpson's, which you can read or download. Again, I prefer Dave Milward's (same as that last link) guide.

You do NOT need a Walkthrough to complete the game. Really! Just play as you see best, and if you get stuck, post here on the Forums.

Romances
The one place you might want a Walkthrough is if you romance Jaheira (romance with the other characters is more straightforward and less buggy). At the very least, Save your game often.

There are several guides, with one by Extremist as the most common.

Don't want a Walkthrough to spoil things for you? Good for you. Just know these basic things:
  • Be nice to Aerie, manly with Viconia, and strong yet sensitive with Jaheira.
  • Romances advance only in Chapters 2, 3, and 6.
  • You can't be a dwarf or Elf if romancing Viconia (or half-orc, without the Fixpack). A gnome can romance Aerie.
  • The gals will force you to choose one of them unless you choose the Multiple Romance option in the Tweakpack. I don't recommend that for new players.
  • Romances do not advance in dungeons, or with creatures nearby.
  • Some steps in Romances advance with game time, some with real time, and some with sleeping.
  • Once a romance is over (did you choose, "For crying out loud, Aerie, can you please STOP YOUR INCESSANT WHINING?"), it's over.
  • Jaheira's romance has a few bugs, most of which are fixed in the Fixpack.

The one place I've had occasional trouble is with Dermin's first appearance. If it's been many days since Jaheira said, "They say you shiver when someone walks over your grave," try sleeping outside de'Arnise Keep. If he doesn't show up, ask for help in the Spoiler Forum.
(You'll edit variables with either the CLUA console or Shadowkeeper. You want DerminSpawn=3, expired DerminAppear, JaheiraRomanceActive2, and Lovetalk 52. You may need to adjust the Dermin variables or set the Lovetalk forward or back by 1.)

I no longer do the Jaheira romance, as it takes a lot of work and I'm lazy, but it's the most challenging, most rewarding of the choices.

Starting Out
This is a last set of tips to help you establish a good start in Waukeen's Promenade, the first stop in the game after the dungeon. (Strategy for the dungeon is simple: kill things and get out.)

A few things to know:
[*] All of the chests outside on the Promenade are empty. Same with the barrels. Don't waste your time looking.
[*] There are a few chests together near the Den of the Seven Vales that make good storage spots, since they are near merchants.
[*] The Circus tent offers a good first quest, with a nice ring at the end.
[*] Many veterans boost their pickpocket skills with potions of Master Thievery and pickpocket a useful ring from Ribald the merchant.

Items

[*] There's no one thing you need to complete the game.
[*] Items last forever in chests and barrels.
[*] Use the TAB key to reveal selectable items
[*] If you think you're done with a quest item, you probably are. Don't worry about ditching things.
If you can't stop worrying, put all your Most-Likely-Junk but-I-Can't-Get-Rid-of-It items in a chest, and then stop worrying.
[*] If you frequently swap NPC's from your party, you may want to store basic weapons and armor to offer them. They don't come with much.
[*] You can also buy back anything you sold by mistake to a merchant. It'll cost you, but it won't disappear.
[*] Throne of Bhaal takes place in a separate area, so carry your key items when ready to finish Ch 6.

You truly don't need any one weapon to finish the game, but in BG2/SoA, it's worth hanging on to these as you find them:

[*] Flail of the Ages
[*] Axe of the Unyielding
[*] Crom Faeyr Hammer
[*] Carsomyr 2-H sword
[*] Vorpal Silver Sword, 2-H
[*] Staff of the Magi
[*] Short Bow of Gesen
[*] Tuigan Short Bow
[*] Firetooth Crossbow
[*] several Slings
[*] Kundane short sword
[*] two self-returning axes
[*] Belm Scimitar
[*] several fair daggers and long bows

I didn't include ToB weapons, because although there are great weapons there, by then you'll have much of the game behind you and will do well with whatever you have in your grizzled-veteran fist.

Hard Fights
You'll generally face tougher opponents as you get tougher. There are a couple of exceptions, where you can run into hard fights early on.

Don't worry! You don't need a Walkthrough! You'll be fine.

Just know that for certain fights, you may need to work out a specific strategy, come back in a few levels, or look for assistance here. There are lots of helpful folks on these fora, plus some Latin students.

Depending on where you wander, it's possible to stumble across these challenging fights even at early levels:

[*] Mencar Pebblecrusher, Den of the Seven Vales. I store items here, but the fight is very, very hard if you arrive straight from the dungeon.
[*] Liches. There are only a few, but if you stumble on one, you can look for help on this Gamebanshee guide, or use the Wayback machine to search the old forums for a good thread on Liches, by Lantier.
[*] Shangalar. Strategies at Gamebanshee or search the old forums for my thread of tactics.
[*] Dragons. Gamebanshee again or the Sticky at the top of the old BG2 forum.
[*] The Unseeing Eye quest, for Keldorn. You'll want to find your favored strategy for dealing with beholders.

For any tough fight, a change in strategy can make all the difference. Save your game and try a different approach. The game rewards inventive tactics.

Other Useful Sites
All of the sites from the previous post, plus these direct BG2 links:
[*] Sorcerer's Place BG2 Useful files and downloads. Look at the categories on the upper right.
[*] XyX's Spell Reference Guide for BG2
[/list]
Those may be of interest, but you don't need them. Don't worry! You'll save Faerun with just your wits, humor, and the occasional potion.

Now go gather your party and venture forth!

You would if the game was rolling a fair 3d6, but infact it will never return less than 75 stat points total, and the chance of getting 90+ is very good for certain race and class combinations - i.e. an elven ranger has minimum abilities of 13, 14, 13, 8, 14, 8 (and the game will always roll until you have least 5 points extra to reach 75), so an average of 15 is not hard if you get a good score in intelligence and charisma.

If you use the G3 fixpack/Baldurdash male HOs at least can have a romance. Dwarves are the only race that cannot.

Xyx's Spell Reference Guide

This guide is pretty good, but still has some errors: Fire Shields are actually very powerful (you can get more damage out of them than any other 4th level spell); Confusion/Chaos is more useful than fear - enemies can't carry out any of their scripted actions like spell/potion use while confused but can while panicked. Feeblemind is far better than Polymorph Other (a polymorphed creature can still use spells/abilities, not to mention a save v polymorph is easier than spells anyway).

Also, that trick with limited wish for bunnies followed by wish for Horrid Wilting on everyone in the area doesn't work.

Just curious... do you happen to know if this was actually possible at any point or if it was a bug which was later fixed by a fix pack/official patch or something? I seem to recall some posters on the old forums posting screenshots of this, but obviously they're gone.

There are some classes that you don't have to roll anything like 10000 to get 93. Fighter/clerics and Cleric/rangers it is much less than that. from experience I have found that for those classes, the number of rolls is usually less than 1000.
That is not done mathematically, just what I have noticed when playing the game.

I keep a backup copy of ToB to test some of my own mods on, but mostly untouched. So I can say with certainty that it doesn't work with patched, unmodded ToB, and there's no mention in the official patch of changing this. Screenshots here and here.

The Wish for Horrid Wilting doesn't cast HW on every creature in the area (as you might expect), instead it changes the target type so that even creatures outside the normal 30' radius are hit, obviously not very useful.

Grimwald and Polytope are right that certain classes have a higher chance of high rolls, since the rolling mechanism discards stats that are below class requirements. You can see a chart here.

The point remains for any newcomer: it's easier to get a total of 85 stat points than 95, and that's enough. You don't need to reroll if you don't wish to.

Thanks to Polytope for the additional spell info. I've now added BG2 info to the second post, above.

Use a new portrait for my PC, Jaheira, and Imoen.

You can do that without Shadowkeeper. Just name the portrait correctly for whomever you want to have it and dump it into your Portraits folder. For your PC, you can change the portrait in-game.

Edit experience up to the correct 169K if having trouble with an import from BG1.

Shouldn't it be 161K XP?

You can't be a dwarf or a half-orc, or an Elf if romancing Viconia. A gnome can romance Aerie.

Though it has been said before: if you install the Fixpack a half-orc can romance Viconia.

Romances do not advance in dungeons, or with creatures nearby.
Some steps in Romances advance with game time, some with real time, and some with sleeping.

Also, many lovetalks will only happen while you are in the wilderness. The De'Arnise hold counts as such only for Jaheira.

Once a romance is over (did you choose, "For crying out loud, Aerie, can you please STOP YOUR INCESSANT WHINING?"), it's over.

And can only be restarted with cheats (or Shadowkeeper).

There's no one thing you need to complete the game.

Except the plot items.

Items last forever in chests and barrels.

They will disappear after some time if you just leave them on the ground. (only if you are not in the same area)

If you think you're done with a quest item, you probably are. Don't worry about ditching things.

Quest items can be discarded without worry at the end of the quest (that's after making the final conversation with the quest giver or whomever).

Throne of Bhaal takes place in a separate area, so carry your key items when ready to finish Ch 6.

If you can't carry everything, you can store things in the Watchers Keep.

Right, good tip!
