ME is special?
Na I really do like ME. There was no distinct point though, it kinda grew on me over time.
At What Moment it the Mass Effect Series did you know that ME was something Special?

For me it was pretty much the whole Series. I started with ME2 because I got it for free with my DA2 purchase. After I got 2 I wondered how I could of even missed getting it before that point and went back and bought ME1. If I had to get into specifics though that are were even more awesome to me i'd have to say the following:
1) Intro to the Normandy SR-2 (first thing that made me say "Hell yeah!")
2) Everything to do with the Reapers
3) Combat system of 2 in general plus so many bad ass if not OP abilities: Adren rush, shockwave, charge, etc...
4) Pretty much all the music

Visiting the Citadel for the first time, and encountering super cop, awesomesaurus Wrex and little miss purple.
Oh who am I kidding? It had been good, then great, but the moment it won me forever started with the words "YOU ARE NOT SAREN"

For me my movie with the "it" moment was Alien ... Everyone in the audience just knew that Dallas was the hero and Ripley was the b1 tch that was going to die. So when Dallas was killed in the shaft the movie said "you thought you knew how the film would end ..."
Cut to Mass Effect ... Virmire. Within that mission I realized that this game had said "Not only do you not save everyone but there is potential to lose additional squadmates if you make mistakes." I watched Wrex die because Shepard (me) had failed to talk her buddy down then not too long later a squadmate was going to be left behind. Yep, after Virmire ... I was hooked.

The first ME game. Was a great experience, especially the first playthrough.

Eden Prime Beacon. Nothing like a rickroll of cosmic significance to convince you that the story is epic.

The ending where all the ships attack sovereign and when I decide to save the council. Filled my "I'm a hero" desire quite nicely.

I knew when saren said he was doing "what must be done" and also the moment you realized his SHIP was actually the antagonist.

I was sucked in as soon as I got elevated to Spectre status in ME1. Also, seeing Captain Anderson punch Udina out never gets old as part of the escape from the Citadel.

The first playthrough got me but mainly the Rachni Queen decision. That seemed pretty major to me.

The intro to ME1. It's amazing! Those first few minutes tell you so much about Shepard and beautifully set the stage and draws you into the story of Shepard.
This was doubly driven home to me when after being pestered for weeks, I broke down and showed my 5 year old the into on YouTube. Her response? "I want to be like Commander Shepard. She's strong and brave. She's AWESOME!" It's so well done that a small child can pick up on all the ques showing you what sort of person the game is about and what sort of adventure is in store.

Saving the council and fading out to M4 knowing shep isn't done yet.
End of ME2 completing the suicide mission nobody left behind.
Bring on the reapers

Seeing the galaxy map for the first time.
Sadly though, I didn't even make it out of the lab in ME2 before I realized that the "Something special" was lost, and the first "Level completed!" screen pretty much cemented that.

I was playing Neverwinter Nights 2, and decided to buy ME1 and ME2 because I loved making choices for my storyline within a video game (Thanks Bioware!) Nice RPG elements with a shooter, optional romance, cosmetic and gameplay differences because of choices. I was hooked when I got to the Citadel and tried to complete all of the quest! (even though I almost burned myself out trying to do it all) I can't think of another RPG that I replayed more than once besides ME1, 2, NWN2.

It was awesome.

I played ME2 first and quickly got immersed so much that I didn't pause to consider how awesome it was. I think I had the feeling that I wanted to know more of this world every step of the way. One of the first moments that I started thinking about the potential of the game, was probably when I met Tali on Freedom's Progress.
Then I played ME1 without expecting much and thought "This is even better, why didn't they do this in the sequel."

That's not to say I didn't enjoy ME2, but it surely lost the magic ME1 had.

Somewhere in between "Welcome to Alliance military database!" and "This is an outrage!"
I was already enchanted by the background music during character creation. By the time we stepped onto the Citadel my mind was fully blown.

When I first saw Nihlus. What was that thing? It looks and sounds awesome! I must go meet him right now. And from there it got even better.
