Right at the beginning of ME1, when you hear Anderson and Udina speaking about Shepard while he is looking outside. I don't know why, but I knew I had stumbled with something special.

The Music of Wall and co. , never played a game where the music fit so nicely to the scene and especially me1 it was just very individual

I played Mass Effect 2 first, so my moment was 'WHAT?! WHY THE F*** DID I DIE AT THE START?!'

At the time I had never seen loadingless loading before. Even today ME1 is one of few games that is nearly completely seamless. ME2 only felt special near the end IFF/Suicide mission but it was mostly down to cinematics and the soundtrack.

It has loading screens all the time.  Every time you see that spinning relay or the relay jump bit, or the pretty, colorful "Normandy flying in FTL" thing?  Those are all load screens.  Same as the little animation when you use the Citadel Rapid Transit system.

At the very least those loading screens gave me the illusion of total seamlessness--unlike ME2's loading screens which were too explicit for my tastes.

If Casey's tweets are anything to go by, though, ME3 will cut down on such loading screens by going the seamless loading route, kind of like ME1. That makes me happy and I hope to see it in a demo or something soon.

For the most part, yeah, they worked pretty well.  Except for when you'd enter a building and for some reason had to watch an animated mass relay.

Oh yeah Rapid Transit was the most blatant one, that's why I seldom used it :-P. The rest were really well concealed though. "Normandy flying" is obviously a video but still immersive. The rest are wonderful though, especially Normandy to Eden Prime. I messed with some of the .biks and it seems the Normandy and possibly others things are rendered on top of the video, that's why it looks so good.

At the end of ME2, despite the "diversity" of the party I recruited, I was still surprisingly able to save them all.

A major feat from Bioware really. Considering their habit of sacrificing people helplessly (and sometimes stupidly) in their stories.

For me, it was the first commercial spot, where Shepard and crew were listening to the distress call from Noveria. The "many decisions lie ahead..." got my gooses bumping.

If they do it like in ME1, I'll kill Bioware.

If they do it like in LotSB and Arrival, then it's going to be great.

Seeing the galaxy map for the first time.

Sadly though, I didn't even make it out of the lab in ME2 before I realized that the "Something special" was lost, and the first "Level completed!" screen pretty much cemented that.

Exactly this.

That's not to say I didn't enjoy ME2, but it surely lost the magic ME1 had.

I agree. However, I can't point at what made this magic disappear.

When I spoiled myself seeing the exchange of Sovereign in Virmire in youtube. Wasn't interested in any AAA game whatsoever till that moment, when I said "Ok, this game has serious ballz. I definitely have to play it".

Ditto.

I liked the game alot but it wasnt til Virmire that I felt the impact of the series. Having to choose b/w two friends and comrades like that. And then seeing the effect it had on everyone onboard the normandy. Ive never experienced ANYTHING like that in a game before. That kind of emotional struggle got to me & hooked my heart.
And ME2 as a whole has spoiled me of all games for sure.
