Sex scene with Liara;-)
Also I love ME1 menu music but the one where on xbox you need to press start to go to menu, you know what I mean.
Also the advert on tv of the first one,as I though I will have to make such a decision, Also I love the music when ME2 begins with Shepard going into atmosphere and the musci where they rebuild shepard too.
At What Moment it the Mass Effect Series did you know that ME was something Special?

Around about here.
Though if we're talking 'favourite moment', then Vigil, obviously. Still gives me goosebumps when I get to that part. Pretty fitting that of both games, despite all the kersploding actions sections and how good they were, my favourite and most memorable part is a conversation.

I started with the series from the beginning, and there were three such "Moments" for me:
1. The introduction, where Udina, Hackett and Anderson are discussing Shepard's candidacy for the Spectres. The most powerful part of the scene was reading the synopsis of human history leading up to the discovery of the Prothean ruins on Mars, where the music slowly builds and swells as the title appears on the screen: "MASS EFFECT".
2. The conversation with Sovereign. Few characters have managed to instill a sense of ancient, brooding and otherwise alien evil like he has.
3. Flying away from Virmire and watching the nuclear blast go off. It was a grim reminder that in war not everybody can be saved, and that sometimes, harsh decisions need to be made.
There were some scenes from ME2 as well (such as Tali's and Mordin's loyalty missions), but overall, the first game had a much greater emotional impact on me.

1. When I talked Saren into killing himself. Bypassing combat and winning a conflict with words.
2. When I understood the scientific principles for the guns and mass effect fields in ME1.

When Saren shot Nihlus in cold blood. They creating the perfect chilling effect in that moment of betrayal. Was still thinking about that moment when finishing Saren off.

When did I find out ME was special?
When I could make my own choices and suffer consequences for them.
Story wise, there are several moments I began to realize how this game was special. Two in particular:
Being threatened by Sovereign
Speaking with Vigil

I knew the games were good but not sure how good. What drew me in was the unique save import feature so i decided to get ME1 and ME2. I played ME1 and realized this was an amazing piece of work, The story and music was incredible. Sure the gameplay was iffy but still loved it none the less. ME2 was perfected for me.
Yet the moment that really made me say this game series was great was when shepard became a spectre and that music came on.

I loved Jack walls music in ME1. It evoked so many SCI-FI feelings.
I have read all the comments and I am surprised that a lot of the people said the Very opening sequence. I never saw that coming.
Thanks everyone for posting. It's been an interesting read.

The second i finished watching the first demo trailer back in 2006.
I KNEW i had to have this game.
Too bad ME2 was a shell of its former self.
Glad to see ME3 bring back more RPG elements again.

The Vigil moment on Illos first time around was amazing and I still find that part of the game incredible to play.
However, it has to be the opening text titles when it says "and they called this"
Pause
Mass effect.

(Played ME2 first)
Hooked into story: when Shepard died in the intro
hooked into gameplay: when I first got access to the Normandy and the Galaxy Map

Played the ME2 demo on PS3. Seeing Shepard get spaced, getting pulled out of coma on a Cerberus space station, and then Freedoms Progress, meeting Tali with the classic: "Shepard?". Was pretty hooked after that.

I saw a distressing amount of Mass Effect 2 on youtube videos, so actually, for me, it was the "optional" scene where you meet the emissary of the Rakni queen. Before then, it hadn't quite hit me that a lot of what I was seeing depended on the first game.
When I actually played the game, the bit with Vigil really hit me hard. It was just such an enormous coming together of facts... all these hidden details, the meaningless Codex entries which you've only barely been paying attention to the entire time, they turn out to be key to what's going on. Fascinating.

Opening sequence, the elevator to bridge walk, and Tada reveal protagonist's face, I was like Whoa!
Then find out it's a damn fetch quest for a boring beacon, I was like Nooooooo, let Nihlus do it himself!
Then the video of all hell breaking loose on Eden Prime, I was like, Oh-oh, I think we're in deep poopy-doo!
Then landing on Eden Prime with a squad of, count them, two guys, I was like sneaking behind every rock and tree and nearly peed my pants when I accidently shot a gas bag.
Then Jenkins get's shot, and I'm, Oh, crap, it's just me and that useless Alenko guy who's half dead after just three little flying robot things and I so suck at shooters, why did I ever buy this game? I sneaked so hard after that, I think Ashley shot the first two 'real' geth all by herself, while I covered behind something three clicks away.
It just got better after that, even though I peed my pants a little again when the main badass alien guy, Nihlus got shot too. I was praying not to meet Saren as the level boss of the Eden Prime level.
Sorry, I think I channeled Thane there a bit.

I got both ME1 and ME2 just a couple of months ago. I just finished my 3rd play through of New Vegas and was looking for another rpg. I've read some good things about the ME series and decided to try it out. I wasn't really hooked with ME1 because some elements reminded me too much of KotOR (not really bad but gave me the "been there done that" feeling), and the repetitive side quests and the ME1 inventory system did not help. I got hooked when I played ME2 but I felt that there was something special during the the SM. I became sort of attached to the squad mates that I wanted all of them to survive. Even until now, I can't bring myself to go through SM and let even one of them die.

My moment when i thought that Mass Effect was (and still is) an epic game/franchise/series was when I talked with Nihlus in the com room, it really was an emersive moment especially when someone tells you "some of us see the potential in your species, we see what you have to offer to the rest of the galaxy and ... to the specters, we are an elite group is hard to find an individual with the skills we seek"

The ending of ME1.
I still think that is the ultimate cinematic in gaming. It all kinda built up to that moment. And when it came... well, it was brilliant. A truly masterful combination of visuals, music, sound effects and story. ME2 never rose up to that, though I think it was a more balanced and more thoroughly enjoyable experience.
It remains to be seen whether ME3's (finished) intro will topple that. As to whether ME3 will topple that later in the game or at the end, it MUST. Otherwise the ME series would have failed it's promise, that of ME3 having an epic ending to the trilogy.
