I mean the largest fan bases were Garrus, Tali, Miranda and Liara last I checked. When did Kaidan become a fanbase super power?

Probably when they muscled him up for ME3.

Kaidan's fanbase isn't that large, but it's always been highly dedicated and talkative.

Fangirlism, mostly. But as a guy I think it's a shame how hugely underappreciated he is otherwise. I didn't like him at first because he "felt" kinda boring, then I paid attention and grew more and more impressed.

He's not a deadly assassin or battle-hardened mercenary, but he shows as much BA qualities as anyone in the game. He's pretty much like "yeah, I fight on migraines from these L2s but I rather keep 'em for stronger biotic-attacks" and "yeah, I was at a biotic boot-camp where kids got abused and sometimes killed, and I unleashed hell on my teacher one day for picking on a girl - that poor bastard."

It's easy to miss because he's soft-spoken and doesn't talk like a tough guy. But that's what I like about him: he doesn't try to be hardcore, he just is underneath the nice guy facade.

I think Kaidan and similar characters appeal to fans who aren't into the stereotypical teen male fantasy "bro" archetypes, who are almost laughable in their attempts to be "badass". Some characters have "lowest common denominator" written all over their scarred, craggy faces, so it's easy to understand why characters like Kaidan, Jacob, and other non-stereotypical "nice guys" might appeal to folks who are outside the target demographic of the "bro" characters. I mean, take Garrus for instance. Other than his "badass" looks, and the whole space Batman vigilante thing (seriously, could he BE more derivative?) what does he bring to the table? Blind loyalty to Shepard? Calibrations? A cool scar? You want to talk about not understanding the appeal, Garrus tops my list. He seems like he's all style, and almost no substance to me. From what I gather, a large part of his appeal is "turians are cool looking".

Yep, just not everyone, including BW, wants to admit it and they prefer to say that Ashley is far more popular. She's not  <_<

I've always been a Kaidan fan because he's low-key and not the typical lead. I actually prefer him to Shep. Everyone has varying tastes. He just happens to appeal to mine.
