I was much annoyed by how Warden's Keep was advertised to me, but that's a whole other topic. Today I was utterly disgusted to find out that I can not play the game without being logged into the BioWare Community. After downloading Warden's Keep any game to have it active requires that the user be logged in via in game connection. This is truly unacceptable, I bought the damn game and I bought Warden's Keep I shouldn't have to log into BioWare every time I start up my computer to play the damn game. There was no warning of this Draconian restriction on how I use my purchase, nothing in the EULA or anything! If my internet ever goes down or if there's ever a problem with the server this means I can no longer play the game.

BioWare should really apologize for this, after all if this is how they treat their paying customers then all they are doing is promoting Piracy. Even people who bought the DLC are downloading the cracked copy just for the work around.

You don't have to log in. If you are being forced to do so, it might be a technical glitch. I've played without being logged in and have Warden's Keep downloaded/installed.

Every time I try to start up a game without being logged in I get a message telling me I have to log in. Are you sure you aren't using a cracked copy yourself?

Check out the tech support form for your platform, some people report similar problems and there are ways to fix them posted there. Personally I have never had an issue with needing to be logged in or even online.

Looks like you should do as suggested and check out the tech forum.

And yeah...pretty sure I don't have a cracked version of the game. Thanks. In fact, I'll move this over to tech support for you. We moderators can do that. :P

Wait, so even though I've downloaded and installed the content, it won't show up in-game unless I have an active internet connection and am logged in to my account?

Sounds like this is the exact problem I came here to fix. Warden's Keep and Stone Prisoner show up as installed and active in the 'Downloadable Content' section of the main menu, but in-game the downloadable content tab asks if I want to buy them (unlike the promo items, which work fine).

Since I was under the impression they should be showing up in my quest journal or something, I wanted to double-check the issue - and apparently I paid money for nothing.

I don't have an internet connection at home, I had to screw around to get access to a connection for long enough to activate the game and download this content...and now you're telling me I have to be logged in at ALL TIMES just to keep that content activated?

There is no logical reason for this and it needs to be fixed.

I play also not logged in well perhaps the first time I installed the DLCs. I noticed that every now and then my DLCs are checked unauthorized but after a couple of seconds it reverts to authorized that only happens if I am logged in which is absurd, its already installed on my machine and have registered my copy of the game why the hell would it still be checked whenever I'm logged in? Its not that I am using a pirated copy, this DRM horse manure is too much!

So the only way I can play with my DLC offline...is to download and install a pirated version of the game and DLC?

Great. Just stellar game design there.

Um, no. As already mentioned, you do not have to be online to play, just to get the DLC the first time and install it.

If you are seeing this behaviour, then you have a technical problem that needs resolution. Have you reported it to EA?

My copy stays "logged in" to my account here when I open the game. But I've been able to load my save without any problem even when the cable connection in my building was turned off for a day and I had no internet access.

I'll check it again when I get home from work.

Edit: After some more reading, seems like those of you who can play DLC offline are in the minority http://social.biowar.../index/228664/1

Thanks, it occures to me that not everyone has the same copy of the game. There are collectors versions and Steam versions and Gamespot D2D versions, Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, so the issue may not apply to everyone and may not effect everyone the same.

I'm going with a generic Box PC version that I bought off the shelf at Wal-Mart. When I tried to load a game without being logged in or before it logged me in, I got a message about a paragraph long and the only option was "OK". I've since downloaded a work around.

It also occures to me that some of those saying they're not having a problem could simply not realize they're auto logged in, work for EA, or have some different version of the DLC I don't know about.

I know I'm not in autologin because I use an HSDPA modem to connect to the internet and you have to manually dial. I've been playing offline since day one and just logged in from time to time to update my profile, so far I haven't encountered any errors related to forced internet connection to be able to play the game.

Exactly the problem I had. You know millions of otherwise legitimate customers are resorting to piracy over issues like this. Why should I buy a legit copy of the DLC if the Pirated copy will have all of the content and features yet none of the draconian login restrictions, DRM, ect?

EA here's a friendly hint, you can't prevent piracy period. Pirates will always find a way around your DRM and your Log In restrictions ect, they even did it with World of Warcraft do you really think they can't do it with your single player games? By employing such intrusive, insulting, and draconian practices you aren't preventing piracy you're encouraging it and you're creating Pirates out of legitmate customers.

Pirated versions work better then the legit copies sometimes its just easier to pirate then then deal with the hassles of legit copies monetary issues aside. I still can't even use my DLC Wardens Keep and I have had it for 18 days now with no help from tech support. Why shouldn't I pirate it when I bought it and its broken and they are not honoring my purchase as a paying customer. They are trying to stop piracy but are only driving honest paying customers towards it to save the headaches or to just get the game to play period. Will they ever learn?

If this is the way EA treats it's customers I see no reason you shouldn't, other than the obvious legal reasons (it's a minor copy right violation). I'm not saying you should, I'd never actually come out and encourage anyone to pirate a product, much less tell them how. All I'm saying is that I have no moral problem with it if this is the way EA is going to treat it's customers.

I only had to authorize it the first time on my game. My issue wich was exactly the same as above, that it said I needed to authorize and that under the DLC menu it would (when I was online) show that I could purchase DLC I had already gotten, was when the Dragon Age: Origins Updater service didn't start on it's own. Regardless of an internet connection, I need that running. Make sure it's started in your services.msc and see if that helps fix your issue.

My problem was that it always prompted me to Log In to BioWare in order to load my save games, no matter what. Unless I was connected to the internet or logged into BioWare I could not play once Warden's Keep was part of any Saved Game. I eventually downloaded a... work around.

If the search worked I could point to a fix on of the BiowWare folks advised. They advised that you should not have to be online to play the game after the initial one time DLC, registration check. Supposedly if you have to be online everytime, the game did not write the code to your registry.

They suggested, in the game folder there is a "daocode.exe", or something along those lines. This adds the game code to the registration. Again, I cannot find the post, silly that you can not even pull up your own posts.

It is possible if you are running Vista/Win 7 if you installed the game without "run as adminsitrator" it may not have alowed the code to be written to you registry.

I unchecked the "autoconnect" on the login and have not played online since I installed tha game. No issues with the DLC's not working.

edit: on a side note I love how "draconian" gets thrown around everytime someone does not like DRM. Draconian would be them making you turn to page 9 of the manual and type in the 7th word on the 6th line of the 2nd paragraph.

;) Well, that would have been nice to know before going through all the trouble of obtaining the 'work around'. Thanks Zacrobmer.

I think the term Draconian would accurately apply to being forced to log into the BioWare server in order to play a single player game that one purchased, or in order to utalize content that you have purchased, especially absent of any warning that such would be the case at the time of said purchase.

Your game should only require you to be logged in to play DLC if your CD key was not installed into your registry properly.
To confirm if it's installed
- Run the daoriginsconfig.exe application
- On the bar on the left of the screen click 'Game'
- There will be box near the lower part of the window called Product Keys
- Confirm that you have a cd key is listed in this box
- If there is no cd key listed, navigate to the data directory on your installation cd and run 'Dragon Age_code.exe'
- If you do not have a cd key installed this exe will allow you to re-enter it

I can confirm this works. I HAD to be constantly logged in to play with DLC. Once I did this, I can stay logged out and DLC works just fine. It's also prevented my DLC from becoming corrupted as I play

I'm experiencing this issue despite having a CD key installed. If I don't log in I can't use my savegames. No big deal at the moment, though it is kind of disturbing to know that I wouldn't be able to play a singleplayer RPG should my internet connection not work for some reason.

I'm having the same issue - I can play if I log in, but otherwise I am completely locked out of the game. My product key is in the registry, following the steps above already.
